I spent about a half hour, but could have spent more, perusing the late season plants and arrangements. Despite the cold weather, the late season plants held up really well. I saw a white potted kale plant that would be a pretty accent piece in an arrangement. I kept returning to look at it, wondering if it was meant for eating or decoration, and decided decoration. Definitely decoration. Some of the pre-potted arrangements were cute in their burlap wrapped pots. Very creative and yet very simple. The plants were well marked and prices easy to find. What I noticed right away was how reasonably priced things were. I can't believe I've never stopped here before. I've driven by it lots of times and have seen it overflowing with plants and vegetables and people and cars. Now I know why. Salem Garden can accommodate the do-it-yourself gardeners and those who prefer others to handle the garden maintenance and landscaping. There's a small house on the property holding gifts such as candles from beeswax and soy as well as bags made from recycled plastic shopping bags and some jewelry and artwork. The hours vary by season but if you see something you absolutely must have, the owners have thoughtfully left instructions on the front door on how you can get what you need. Because there are always those who take advantage, you'll have to stop by and see for yourself how they accomplish it.

I opted to get that contractor to pick up the materials for me, to save a buck on the delivery fee, but apparently the contractor says that he did not pick up all of it as we didn't need all of it for the project, but when I talked to the store they said that my contractor in fact did pick up everything. They said Unfortunately this is more common than not, and they were generous enough to work with me to help get me a refund for what was allegedly not taken. Regardless of whatever the truth is, the fact of the matter is that Daniel and his team took care of me and helped educate me as well. I ordered 75 yards of a 50/50 mix topsoil, which they claim is put through a 3/4" screen. Obviously, it's dirt, so you have to expect certain things like small rocks, clay clods, sticks, glass may get through. However, I spent nearly a week filling up close to 30+ qty wheel barrels full of hard clay clods. There were 1000's the size of large walnuts, hundreds the size of oranges, dozens the size of softballs, and even 1 the size of a watermelon. There is absolutely no way this was screened. I had ordered from them before, was bothered by their website, but was pleased with the delivery and the product the first time, which is why I proceeded this time. However, after this experience, I will never order from them again and offer a sincere buyers beware.

I had no idea this was a landscape business where the emphasis is on Japanese style landscaping and gardening. Adding that it also deals in natural rock sculptures is too obvious I suppose, given the name of this business and that large bird thing out by the road. Although it's probably too early in the year to get the full effect of the Japanese garden in various forms the landscape owners have built here, there was still enough green to see how the style incorporates the natural elements in the flora, water, stones and rocks. The display incorporates the elements into different styles to give a taste of how it works to evoke the beauty and simplicity. Sprinkled around are the stone sculptures. There are areas containing ponds, birdbaths, or free flowing water -- some with bamboo -- stone walkways and stone statues, and benches. This is certainly worth a visit, if you're looking for inspiration, but you may not get the full effect until later in the spring.

Multiple staff members have ignored me while standing around talking to each other, and when I finally asked for help, they seemed annoyed and uninterested. The staff in the greenhouse, in particular, were especially unwelcoming and would not even look up to say hello or ask if I needed assistance, even when I was standing just a few feet away. I won't be returning and wouldn't recommend this nursery to anyone. I would gladly drive twice the distance to visit another nursery in the future.
