This Walmart is the poster child for bad Walmarts. Your almost guaranteed to see the police here every visit arresting someone. I've watched people get dragged out screaming, I've seen cops yelling at people in the front door, I've even seen people lose it and destroy the detectors up front. One time I was in a toy isle and 2 cops came one on each side. The guy next to me had been stealing and coming back in to get more. I was approached a few times in the parking lot here by people sneaking up behind me and asking for money. It's fairly close to the large truck stop where sex trafficking happens a lot and has been in the news multiple times for it. It's not a safe Walmart. It's dirty and they don't put the stock away, most of the time it just sits in the isles or in the middle of the walkways. The pharmacy is constantly out of medicine. The produce is a hit and miss. Cakes can only be requested if it's more than 48 hours in advance. Lots of items are locked up in electronics and personal hygiene. Carts sit piled up outside constantly. If you need to come here do pick up or come during the day during the week. read more

I am beyond upset! First off as soon as I got in the store I needed water because it's 100 degrees outside! There was an employee standing at a register I figured I would go to her instead of self check out. I said to her about paying with cash because of the sign on her register said CASH ONLY! She looked at me and said all of those self checkout take cash! Instead of her just picking up my bottle of water and ringing it up she just stood there and looked at me! I felt like I had to go to another register! As I am looking around the clothing my husband calls me back to paint section! Where he had already hit the call button for help 5 times! By now it's been a half hour waiting to get a gallon of paint! I asked other associates to get us help to get no help! Finally I called up to the front of the store and ask them to get us help! The customers are rude. They just walk out in front of you or push by you to grab something off the shelf even though they aren't wearing a mask & shouldn't be that close to you during a pandemic. Obviously all Walmarts have their issues but i just had the best experience there after an unfortunate event. I placed a cane order online, paid in advance, 2 days before i needed to pick it up. I received a phone call, a rude voicemail that i didn't hear until after the second phone call... it was someone in the deli or bakery department, letting me know my cake order is cancelled as they don't have a decorator for 3 more weeks. i was so angry! I cut her off and asked when i'll get a refund and she told me 'idk 2 weeks?' and i hung up crying. Reached out to the front end manager Courtney, who got me a $75 gift card for the inconvenience and rude worker who called me! i couldn't be happier. Courtney deserves a raise for going above and beyond. read more

I picked one star only because that is as low as you can go. For all you people who put in good reviews about this store... take off your blinders!!! I shop at this store at least twice a week, and I hate it every time I have to go in there! I only go because their prices are a bit cheaper and I'm a cheapskate. I make them pay every time I go. I look for everything I can find that is wrong and bring it to their attention. Problem is nothing ever changes. The store manager there is a moron!! So here are just some of the issues: 1. It's filthy! 2. They have no idea what they have or what they need! The items that they sell out of quickly are always gone. That's because they don't understand inventory. If you sell out of something fast....now here comes the big secrete, ORDER MORE OF THEM!! 3. Nobody that works there ever knows where anything is. 4. Shelves are not stocked correctly....EVER! 5. Make sure you check the pricing. Every time I go I find a problem with the pricing, and it's never in my favor, always Walmart's!! Last time it totaled up to $15. Take that times 10 million customers per day. l 6. I've called their 800 number so many times they know my voice. I always tell them my latest "customer experience", but nothing ever happens or changes! 7. They are not even smart enough to teach their people how to sack groceries. It's not rocket science people. You don't put the cold stuff in with the warm stuff. I had to start using the self check so I could walk out of there with my groceries sacked correctly. Which really pisses me off. I have to do all the work, but don't anything back for my trouble. How about 10% off the groceries for my trouble. No, what do they do, they pay someone to stand there and watch me check my stuff, someone that could be running a checkout in another aisle. 8. Then the put someone else at the door asking for receipts. Right in front of the door and blocks the way for anyone else. Here's a little tid bit. You don't have to show them your receipt!!!!! Read the law. The transfer of ownership starts at the checkout stand. Those are your groceries, and you let them paw through your stuff!! NOT ME. I have a lot more but I think you get the idea. I realize the last few are more Walmart corp issues and not just this store. I'm not saying stay away from the store, just saying be aware, and don't let them get away with all their BS. I enjoy the self-check out. Never too old to learn new things! Since I was kid I wanted to draw on a chalkboard like a teacher, be a cashier to ring up groceries and other bucket list stuff - this has now only allowed me to check off from my bucket list, but to package my groceries the way I want, not have to worry about taking someone else's germs home with me! It took me a while to get used to pumping my own gas . . . and now it is 2nd nature. All prices are going up (and we claim that all businesses have enough revenue) but the fact is, prices are lower at Wal-mart . . . I am o.k. with being self-sufficient. read more

There are varying degrees of Wal-Mart's across the country. This one is pretty up there with "worst I've ever shopped". Crap in the aisles, disheveled shelves, unorganized clothing, hanger size doesn't match clothing tag size, unclean. Overstocked and crammed up clothing racks, leading to hangers and loose clothing on the floor. Dirty shelves. Needs the floors cleaned. Cashier double scanning items (I've had this happen on more than one occasion) It's just a Supermess. Keep on going, next town over is Ankeny and that Wal-Mart is waaaay better, cleaner, well kept, friendly staff, organized, associates are always facing product, folding clothes and organizing. AND they take the time to see if you need any help finding things. I'll NEVER step foot into Altoona Wal-Mart ever again. read more

I am 16 years old, I had to walk my 68 year old grandmother into the store. They had no electric carts at the food end of the store, so I walked to the other side. I got there and there was one cart. I went to fetch it for her and an employee told me that he needed to take it to the other end for someone who had called for it. So me and him get to the other end and the woman has left. Then another woman who has just walked into the building asks if she could have the cart. The employee then asks the man at the door, "who was here first" and he replies "that woman" while pointing to the woman who had just walked into the door. This was one of the most disrespectful Interactions I have ever been apart of and I cant believe the way the employees handled the situation. read more

I went in today at 10:30 am with my husband to pick up a vaccum and a scale and a few household things and after paying for our items we proceeded to the door with receipt in hand. Upon reaching the door on the market side their receipt person held out his hand while still talking to the associates and after we proceeded to keep walking he said I need your receipt!My husband replied are you accusing us of stealing and he said Yes! I am! So we turned around and headed to customer service to speak to a manager about it and the female manager was like well I don't know what to tell you, but that's their job. I said to accuse even though we are paying and she said yes. She even had our receipt in her hands looked it over and instead of apologizing for the bs she kept her nasty attitude up. I went to there to buy the fish licenses waiting over 20 minutes for a person to come do the licenses to me And then when walk to the ice freezer looking for ice and empty gallons bottles and I have my sunglasses on top of my hat so I drop it there so I pick up my hat only because so I didn't realize I have sunglasses on the hat too so I lost in there and just check for customers service to find out any lost and found sunglasses but I waited for 30 minutes on the phone and one of this customer Clark answer the phone just get me attitude like you have to come yourself back here check yourself I don't have time for that she just up on me WTF! I used to like going to the Walmart in Altoona, it was close to my work, and being a 24 hour store I could always grab whatever I needed any time before or after my work shift. Staff was mostly friendly, but I would come in at times that either shifts were changing or mostly when the employees had boxes to unpack and get on the shelves. I completely understood that..no complaints. I recently went into the Walmart in Altoona, and noticed they had remodeled the front check outs. It used to be that there were maybe 10 ish 15 ish self checkouts. Now, they have changed it to mostly self check out and they have only 6 actual checkout that someone would be standing there. I am a person who has used self check out at times, but I think so many of them seems to be more forced on a customer to use them. Yesterday, I went in and got in a normal checkout line. Gal was friendly and chatting with the folks. It was nice. I probably will still shop here, but just found it sad that so many self checkouts had been added to the store. read more

The Subway at this Walmart is terrible. The sandwiches are made sloppy. The trays that the cheese, pickles and lettuce is in are not clean. The floors, tables, and pop station are dirty and sticky. The chicken was chewy. The bacon is fatty. read more

Walmart has a pickup service that we learned to do after the Coronavirus problem hit our area. Wow! This is a smooth process! Here's how it works - At the Walmart website, we reserved a time and date for pickup. We had a span of time to create an order, and could even edit the order over time, many times if we wished - which was so easy to add and delete items. When the time actually arrived that the order had been gathered and ready for pickup, Walmart sent an email. As we arrived for the pickup, there was a phone number to call. An employee, named Angela, came out and loaded the groceries in the trunk! She was friendly and carefully placed the items. The cost of the groceries was simultaneously charged to our online bank account. No fees were charged for this service. We had the food in our refrigerator and pantry in under 30 minutes! And we didn't have to do the shopping. Thank you so much, Walmart! You have made us happy customers! read more

When I walked in there were no employees anywhere near the entrance. I got a cart, and headed to the clothing aisle. I was hunting around for footwear, and finally found the area. I heard snarky remarks, and saw a few employees walking around, or laughing. No offer of "can I help you find something?" No effort whatsoever to be of assistance, just mocking behaviors. I found my items, but it was difficult to get around the store due to boxes piled up in the aisles. Then, as I was checking out at a self-checkout, the machine declined my debit card twice, even though it worked fine this morning at two other stores. An employee was standing nearby, but just ignored me and my beeping checkout machine. I got another card to work as payment. then, people were funneled through some other employee, there to check our receipts or something. I had the sense that the store was being run by teenagers, and was out of control. This experience reminded me why I Hate to go to Wal-mart, especially this one. Never again. So I went to the store today and I had to pick up a couple of items that are needed as I'm from out of town and I'm in the morning for business well I am also collectors of server toys a Mean Way, Funko pops and I found two that I did not have five proceeded to go to the register to check out when the two toys were ski and they came up almost 6 dollars more than what they were on the shelf and when I ask cashier about it he just said the price was what it was and I asked her if he was going to change it or call a manager to at least verify it and he said no couldnt change it and I asked if he could have someone verify the price and he said no so I decided that I wasn't going to purchase the items I let him know that and he proceeded to break them out and as he was wearing them out Amanda just happened to walk by so I politely called the manager over and explain the situation to him and he proceeded to tell me that he was going to look into it and then walked outside my overall experience in the store was horrific as a manager of a competitor If my leadership acted the way that this manager did as well as if the cash if our cashiers acted this way and then be wrote up it's uncalled for and rude. Customer should not be treated that way. read more

Just wanted to add a note for the automotive department. I was basically stranded seven hours from home when a Walmart in Iowa City found a crack in the rim of my tire. Very long story but I received a new rim in Altoona and by the time I got to the automotive center it was basically closing time. I can't say thank you enough to the employees there that evening who stayed over and was willing to help a total stranger so far from home. Wish there were more people like you! read more

Walmart's auto department in Altoona, Iowa, did labor that involved removing a car wheel and then putting it back on. Within the same week of light daily commuting, I felt a strong vibration in the accelerator and heard a persistent loud noise while driving -- another mechanic looked at the vehicle and said the lug nuts were VERY LOOSE on the same wheel Walmart had worked on. I complained to Walmart, but management insists they followed the correct tightening procedure. I'll leave it to you to guess whether it's more likely that they screwed up, or that my wheel magically came loose the same week they worked on it. read more

Took NO blame in their part and when turned into the claims management insurance comp ( walmart insurance company)they denied my claim and WALMART WILL NOT REPLACE THEM.... The assistant store manager, Jackie, and store manager, Tyler, are the only saving graces to this store. I had the worst experience getting a simple oil change on a Sunday afternoon.....they drained the oil, said my plug was stripped and they were unable to put a new one in. After they drained the oil pan, the garage manager, Melissa, says, "well, you have no oil and your oil pan plug is stripped. We can't put in a new plug so you need to tow your car somewhere who can."......(on a Sunday!!!) .....she expected me to now pay for a tow and find someone competent enough to wrench in a plug.... She said, "we can push it outside for you". The woman was the most unprofessional person I've ever done business with, with absolutely no compassion for me or my situation of being stranded at Walmart with two young kids! Even after finding someone to run across town for me for a new plug, and us wrenching this new plug in, ourselves (in their parking lot), she refused to put new oil in for me. Absolutely the worst experience I've ever had. Never ever again will I take my car in to a place with such I professionalism, lack of empathy and incompetence. The store managers, bless their hearts, were understanding and helpful, as they were the ones who offered to put oil into my car, as, again, the garage manager refused and I was stranded. Also, they demanded the stripped plug was from my previous oil change and not them, today. But funny thing is I never leaked any oil.....so, how could it have been stripped before today?!?! read more
