Went here with my dad and he loved it because apparently it was from "his time", meaning very diner feel but with art and music and waitresses dressed in homage to the 70s and 80s. Growing up listening to my old man's music, I found the place to be quite nostalgic as well. However, food here is another story. Not a throwback but very expected for breakfast fare. We ordered the denver omelette and Friday lunch special which featured a sort of smothered breakfast burrito. Most meals here come with your choice of 2 sides and if you get the pancakes, they are massive! And delicious, so my rec for most bang for your buck. The French toast served to be quite delectable as well. Unfortunately my omelette tasted dry, which is the downfall of bad omelettes. Luckily the smothered burrito proved to live up to its name as being juicy and overloading with green chili flavor. The food is acerege, the service was better than averege. For what this place is, and inexpensive breakfast cafe I thought it was good. The menu has plenty of choices, vegetarian and gluten free options. There are always many pie and cobbler choices. there is always a daily special. I had the tofu breakfast. I've only ever had breakfast here, its the spot on sunday mornings. I've loved everything I've gotten. They have grits here! Which is kind of the winning sentiment. The service is great and the feeling in the restaurant is that everyone seems like family. The owners were there the last time I was there and they were constantly checking in with us (we waited about 40 minutes for a table). They'll even bring you a little banana bread if you've been waiting forever, which is nice when you're starving! It may not be the best breakfast on the planet, but its such a warm welcoming place (they gave us blankets to wrap around us when we were waiting outside) that I would go here over pretty much everything else! read more

After spending the better part of a week visiting my cousin suffice to say "yay! I'm a fan" of the city of Boulder. Also suffice to say that my, ahem, Midwestern traits (read thighs and a butt) indicate that I do ENJOY eating and not as healthily as I should (or the bulk of Boulder does). That all said, ADORED eating at Walnut Café! The Tempeh skillet was delish and the triple shot iced coffee sugar bomb that exploded into my mouth and coursed through my veins for hours was equally as delish. Visited this restaurant while I was visiting my brother in Colorado last week...twice! We ate brunch on both visits and both times I was impressed with the quality of the food and the customer service. The folks there are friendly and they cook up a mean stack of pancakes. The veggies in my omelettte tasted fresh, the breakfast potatoes were well-seasoned, and the OJ tasted like it was fresh squeezed. I also ordered the Cambric to drink which was also yummy. Yes, it's just hot tea but the steamed milk and honey made it extra special. On our second visit I ordered the Eggs Marcos and they were absolutely devine! Lightly toasted English muffins with overeasy eggs, topped with wilted spinach and a creamy, dill (tangy!) sauce. It was oh-so good. The blueberry cornbread was also pretty tasty. I ordered the Florentine to drink and thought was better than a regular cup of coffee. Not bad. Did I mention that this restaurant also hosts cool local art? Reminds me so much of Magnolia Cafe or Kerby Lane here in Austin. ^_^ I'm coming back here next time we're in Colorado. read more

Walnut Cafe is always a great breakfast choice. I've been going for several years and have never been disappointed. Today was the first time I went for lunch, and the Cafe didn't let me down. The selection wasn't quite as robust as the breakfast options (hence the 4/5 stars), but everybody I went with was still able to find something that made them happy. I ordered the 007 (sandwich with avocado, lettuce, sliced tomato, some sort of sun-dried tomato spread, and a garden burger), but because of my generally inarticulate speech the waitress must have thought I asked for the Number 7 (same thing minus the burger) since that's what I was served. I wasn't unhappy with the mix-up though; it was still a tasty light lunch. The iced Boulder Latte (espresso, milk, vanilla flavoring, honey, and cinnamon) had the perfect ratio of sweet-to-coffee (I'm not a real sugary-coffee kinda guy, and this laid off the sugar just enough). read more

Really great place to go for breakfast. Food is great, service is friendly, location convenient, and prices are cheap. They showcase a customer of the month, which shows they really make an effort to make this a community cafe. Very vegetarian and vegan friendly which is a HUGE plus, especially for breakfast places. The Boulder Scramble and the Vegetarian Sloppy Joe were very well made and filling. The dishes also come with your choice of sides, the breakfast potatoes were very well made and the blueberry corn bread was unique and flavorful. They have an expresso bar for the coffee lover's out there. And for those with a sweet tooth they specialize in pies! I really wanted to try the pecan pie but I was so full after my fantastic meal, I just didn't have room. I'll have to keep it in mind for next time. read more

What I like most about Walnut Cafe is their "can do" attitude. Sometimes yes, you have to wait a bit for a table during peak hours on weekends, but never a snooty look or exasperated tone will be found. I tend to be a really picky eater (plus I rarely eat dairy) and Walnut Cafe is all about being flexible around food allergies. They have tons of gluten free and dairy free/substitute options, plus are happy to make something "special" if you ask. For instance, I typically ask for more protein and less carbs in my burritos or omelets. This is accomplished by getting soy cheese, an extra egg and/or even an extra chicken breast cut up and put inside. They don't even blink an eye when I ask for my special order. Love that! I only wish that they would attempt a gluten free pancake as I'm sure they'd be great at it! read more

This is my sister's favorite place to go for breakfast, so we headed there one morning for a fantastic feast... The place was crawling with very attractive, healthy looking people. This isn't unusual in Boulder, but I was just surprised to find such a high concentration of eye candy in one place at 9 am. We sat outside in the sun and enjoyed some Huevos Rancheros, and a breakfast burrito over tasty beverages. I sometimes wish I drank coffee, because whatever my sister had looked and smelled yummy. First time there! I was excited, but they weren't very accommodating to my dietary needs and it ruined it. Only stayed cause I had good company. I had to pay extra for them to take the dairy out of my eggs. I couldn't sub some cilantro for cheese at no cost. The waitress with the dreads, her reasoning was that it would be too complicated to ring in for the kitchen. I work at a popular Pearl st breakfast place, it's not that complicated. Stopped for breakfast, the special was not very good, I'm not use to having my plate toss down in front of me and the waitress disappear before the plate stopped moving. Plus my breakfast was missing my sausage. Also my side of pancakes was missing butter, who serve pancakes without butter? I ended up Leaving the main dish, paid the bill and left. If this isn't a place you're having breakfast, you are missing out. I'm just going to say it -- I'm picky as hell. And this place SLAYS it every single time. Sure the breakfasts are terrific, like really terrific, BUT THE SOUPS AND QUICHES ARE RIDICULOUS. I don't even like quiche and I love THEIR quiche. Whoever is in that kitchen is a wizard. I love the food, but not the crowds. I eat at Walnut Cafe fairly often in the past few months (in stead of The Egg & I). I love the omelets, especially their daily specials. I love that the breakfasts come with 2 sides & don't cost more than $7. I don't love the vibe when it's super-busy & I don't love sitting in the back by the bathroom or the busser station. If timed right, The Walnut Cafe is an excellent alternative to the corporate chain breakfast/lunch restaurants. It's way better than anything on Pearl Street with way less of a hassle as well. read more

Cool place. Had lunch here on July 3. Walnut Cafe is well known in Boulder and they have a lot of vegetarian dishes and options. As a meat eater, I chose the steak and cheese sandwich. It was ok, but not awesome. The amount of steak and flavor of the steak was not impressive for the price. The family enjoyed their meals and overall service was good. I wold go back to try other itemsif I lved in Boulder. They didn't wow me, but overall was more of a 3.5 rating. read more

This is hands down the best breakfast place in which I have ever eaten. I am pretty well traveled. We were are loving the CU Boulder experience. #gobuffs. When we travel from the east our plans to eat here each visit are first on our list of things to do. The Obamas made a little pancake place in our hometown national news. I have to say the food here was delicious. But I can only give it three stars due to the flakey service. We took a client here for lunch. There were 5 in the party. When the waitress took our drink order, she forgot one person. When she came back to take our food order, she almost walked away without getting everyone's order. We had to catch her and tell her she forgot to get everyone's order. Half way through the meal I had to remind her of my original missing drink order. It still took reminding her a third time to finally get the drink. I would return but only if I had a different server. I hope she improves her skills. I don't think she ever gave her name but she had a multi-colored weave. read more

Blueberry corn bread was good, but don't be fooled by its name. This is a regular fluffy pancake, has nothing to do with corn bread, I didn't taste corn meal at all. "Old Pocahontas" for a waitress was a bit off putting. It's located in a strip mall, and they have seating outside in this strip mall, charming it is NOT. you are way better off going to Chautauqua cafe a few min away. gorgeous location, beautiful white house with a huge wrap around porch, and food is same quality, if not better. read more

The staff here was super friendly and very attentive. Our wait was not long, very nice for Sat morning/noon The scramble I got was fantastic, and I really like how you get to pick your sides. The hot apple cider was yummy, as was the pumpkin pie. The only negative was the banana French toast was only so-so as the wheat bread was nothing special. read more

This place is where it's at if you want some good, old fashioned comfort food. Breakfast is what they are known for, but I personally really like the 007 which is their homemade veggie burger with a sundried tomato cream cheese spread. Having said that, there are some consistency issues with it. Sometimes it's really big and delicious and other times the actual veggie burger is on the small side and dried up. But again, when it's on a good day - it's one of the best sandwiches I have had and worth the risk. The Boulder latte is delicious any time of the day, and they always have a special pie and pastry worth trying that changes every day. The service is so friendly and has a great mom and pop feeling to it. I highly recommend this "off the beaten path" eatery, as it's in a strip mall behind the 29th Street Mall. Journey over to Walnut Cafe next time you want a satisfying breakfast without the lines that Pearl Street can muster up with Snooze and the Foolish Craig's of the world. read more

As a hole in the wall in the middle of a shopping center, this place provided a nice change of pace. Very relaxed but didn't have your diner feel. Steak sandwich was delicious. Meat was very flavorful and the grilled vegetables were just enough to enhance the flavor. Five stars. The chicken salad was again a 5 star quality. The chicken was well seasoned and wasn't dry. We will definitely have it again. Ham sandwich was okay. It's just got regular ham sandwich. The sandwiches were served with some Ruffles type chips. I wasn't crazy about the chips. We were in such a rush and the server was so nice and accommodating. All in all if I'm ever in town, I will definitely stop by again. read more

I particularly like getting their daily special quiche and sunshine sandwich with avocado and tomatoes substituted for the meat and cheese, with an order of "special potatos" on the side (a perfect cure for a rum/pineapple juice mistake of a night -blech! We went there with a coupon ($20 for $10) and the food was good enough but I don't think I would have wanted to pay full price for it. The ambiance wasn't the type that would draw me back very often. Walnut café is extremely popular, and I understand this to some extent. The culture of Boulder lends itself to the popularity of small, trendy, brunch spots. Walnut café was fine, but it was nothing spectacular. My wife had the banana pancakes, and I had the traditional eggs Benedict. I've had LOTS of different eggs Benedict, and I would probably continue to order the ones at WC. But again, it was nothing spectacular. The portions are good size, the service is really terrific, and the price is repeatable. It's certainly a "go-to" kind of place for a Sunday brunch before/after a big hike. But I'm kind of surprised with the reviews and how amazing people think it is. It's good everyone, but not THAT good. Oh, it was only a minor point, but the service really is great. This place is my favorite breakfast restaurant on earth. It has the best pancakes and pies on earth, the potatoes are to die for, the fruit bowls are so fresh, the prices are very reasonable. The place is very down to earth, colorful, delightful. Everyone weekend I order two eggs with turkey sausage, breakfast potatoes - which are just out of this world, then two pancakes, one is blue berry cornbread, the other chocolate chip, banana, granola. I eat here all the time, the food is great, staff is friendly and fast. Great coffee and coffee drinks, all at very reasonable prices. I don't feel the Walnut deserves the neutral or below neutral feedback I've seen. The potatoes are fine, just "home style" (not hash browns) and nothing weird about them in my opinion. This place isn't Dennys. The food taste, um, real. They have lots of variety on the menu, so should be something for everyone. Very much worth the visit to make up your own mind. read more

Cute place! Very iconic boulder feel to the restaurant. I ordered 2 eggs, sausage patty, 2 slices of French toast and fresh fruit. The fruit and the French toast was great, with a lot of flavors, the sausage was very good and not too salty and lastly, the eggs were dry and lacked spice. I ordered Iced Coffee but even with an excessive amount of sugar, it was very strong with a bitter after taste. The service was outstanding but the wait time was average. read more
