Apples and peaches are the volume crops but there are also seasonal harvests of pears, blackberries, corn, tomatoes and a variety of vegetables. In winter, there are carefully selected choices of various citrus options mostly from Florida. The Barnards have played a prominent role in multi century Quaker history and with this very special farm continue to do so. Among the particular treats are a variety of cut flowers, including a nice long season of snapdragons grown in the beautifully maintained turn of the twentieth century greenhouses. Everything about Barnard's is authentic and pleasing, including farmer Lewis Barnard. Go. It won't be your last time. It's cash preferred (fees for credit card); there is plenty of parking.

They take credit cards, checks, or cash. Usually the fruit is about a dollar or two less than if you buy it in a market because you're picking your own. They told me they do have to use some sort of treatment for the plants to avoid fungus but try to use as little as possible.

Some things were outside, other things inside, w/ a line of people waiting to pay starting at the tented outside register area, backed up, weaving all the way thru the market isles to the front door. You had to squeeze between the line of people waiting to pay & the shelves of food to shop, making it hard to look at anything, much less grab anything. I know this sounds like a good problem to have, but not when chaos is driving the experience more than demand. Exhausted from wondering the outside trying to figure out what all there was to do & where to go, then braving the market, I decided to skip apple picking which was the main reason I was there! That process appeared even less clear, so no regrets. I do love the things purchased at the market, including apple cider donuts, frozen pastas, & Reading Soda Works bottles- just think I'll return to shop on a day when nothing is going on.

That kind of continuity shows in how the place is run. I went for the fall hay rides, which were a great time for the whole family. Picked up summer vegetables earlier in the season that were fresh and clearly local, and came back in the fall for the fruit -- really good quality. It's a genuine, family-run farm market, not a manufactured "experience," and that makes it worth the visit. Great spot for fresh produce and a fun fall outing.

The Festival runs on Feb. 26-28 & March 5-7 between 9am - 4pm. Essentially, you can create Your Own Whoopie Pie for $4 each, 4 or more at $3.50 each, and 12 or more $3 each. Here's how it works - make your customized selections of one of 12 cookies, one of 11 frostings, and one of 7 toppings, and Brecknock will build your pie. I went full Elvis mode and selected banana cookies, peanut butter frosting, and chocolate chip toppings around the circumference. We had a great time at Brecknock -making our Whoopie pies, playing a whoopie pie trivia game, and picking up a few odds and ends for us and friends. PRO TIP Hats off to Brecknock for their generosity and hospitality. They had free samples everywhere- whoopie pie wedges, pretzels, popcorn, and all sorts of goodies. It worked on us, because after sampling some honey mustard pretzels, we couldn't grab a bag fast enough.

Our younger daughter wanted to try a few raspberries before deciding whether she liked them. We made an honest mistake and understood when we were told that this was not allowed. We apologized and offered to pay for the raspberries, and we even paid an extra $4 for the couple she had tried. What bothered us was how the situation was handled. A woman came out from the house and spoke to us in a condescending manner, even asking whether we would eat food from a grocery store before paying for it. We apologized and agreed to pay, but the situation continued even after we had left the fields. The woman called the checkout desk about us as we were making our way to pay. We were happy to acknowledge our mistake and pay for what was taken. We simply expected the situation to be handled with a little more courtesy and understanding, especially since we immediately offered to make it right, and have been repeat customers. The farm itself is a nice setting, but based on our experience, the customer service left a lot to be desired. If you're trying to teach your kids what good customer service looks like, this probably isn't the place to do it.

The small share is more than enough for two adults. John and Thera are community-minded, always welcoming, sharing their knowledge and inviting members to participate. Somehow they manage to find time send out periodic newsletters to update us on recent improvements on the farm, the impact of the weather on various crops, and about the new baby goats. There wasn't an entrance fee and you pay by the pound ($4.99/lb, cash only). Best of all, no crowds! We enjoyed the strawberries at home and they were incredibly sweet!
