The park itself is really small, more of a neighborhood pocket park than a sprawling city green space. The playstructures were in great shape, there was a lovely pond with ducks and a small walking trail around the perimeter. Mature trees provide shade and there was even a lovely little gazebo for that extra dash of small-town, Americana charm. The kids played, we stretched our legs and everyone was ready for the road.

The preserve is located off of SC highway #162 near Hollywood. Entrance to the preserve is free. This is a dog friendly park, so feel free to bring your fur babies! This is a beautiful park spanning 643- acres. There are several scenic trails that wander along the property. Bring your camera as there is a lot to see. The preserve has been set up to provide feeding and roosting areas for a variety of birds, Wood storks, Great Egrets and Blue Herons. You may also see alligators, deer and squirrels along the way. The trails are well maintained and clearly marked. There is not a restroom or picnic tables at this park. However, there is a gorgeous 300- foot boardwalk with an observation deck overlooking the swamp/pond. I had a picnic lunch here as I watched an alligator sun bathe and fish jump. It was so peaceful. If you are looking for a few hours to get back to nature and see beautiful views and some wildlife, you need to add Dungannon to your "Must See" list.

Exploring the site was difficult due to the robust biting insect population. I found an indoor cabin with some exhibitions about people who died in battle, which is certainly a subject that merits contemplation. Trying to actually walk on the trails proved untenable. To the limited point that I got there wasn't a ton to see. I could imagine that there is more to be done here. It wasn't the hottest day of the year by a long shot, but it still was hot enough to make me wish I'd diverted over during winter.

At 9am on a drizzly Saturday morning, I was the only visitor as I walked around under an umbrella and avoided the wet spots. The site is one of the last stands of the Confederacy against the overwhelming Union Army led by General Sherman during his march to the sea. It is the only state park in the South Carolina system that has a preserved battlefield. The battle took place on February 3, 1865 (the Appomattox surrender in Virginia was two months later, on April 9) with approximately 5,000 Union solders against 1200 Confederate soldiers. 18 Union soldiers were killed alongside 8 Confederates. It is generally considered a Union victory. The park includes a 3/4 mile trail that details the Battle of Rivers Bridge with captioned panels along the walk. Well-preserved earthworks here and there are worth checking out. I did not spot any Park Rangers giving tours but I was able to get the gist of it myself without help. It's quite rural. We somehow forgot to bring water with us for our trip and he quickly offered to let us use his 5 gallon water jug (for no cost and he filled it for us). Booking was easy , directions and details were clear. Paddle was somewhat easy and just long enough to enjoy without getting overly tired. This is a unique experience that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a river, canoe and nature. Seems to stay booked pretty solid during the warm months so plan with plenty of time.

Day 1 was about a twelve mile canoe trip (4-5 hours on the water) and day 2 was 10 miles (about 3-4 hours)- they provided maps of the river and mile markers posted on bird feeders along the route. The treehouses are extremely well maintained, sturdy, and clean. They provided cookware (pots, pans, utensils, etc.), as well as indoor and outdoor grills, a french press for coffee, soap, cookie spray, matches, board games, a hammock, and a lovely fire pit. Our treehouse slept 2, but there is a 3-4 person and a 6-8 (I think). Ours had one couch in the main room and an upper loft with a mattress and pillows (all extremely clean). Bring your own blankets or some sleeping bags, though. This is the last year under current management. The couple who currently own it built it all by hand and the love they put into it absolutely shows. They have confidence in the new owners taking over and we can't wait to see what the new people do with it going forward. If I could give them 6 stars, I would, but 5 will have to do. This is a treasure of South Carolina and you need to check it out immediately (but maybe keep it a Spring and Fall activity- there's no A/C).

He was so excited to be going for his last day off before going back to work only to drive nearly an hour out there to be turned away. Apparently they do not rent shotguns to a single player, which is listed absolutely no where on their website. If you're going to have a rule like that, make it clearly known or at the very least, pick up your phone! I mean, come on. Why waste someone's time? He did everything right trying to plan this with your company, but due to poor management, your company ruined his last day off work. He's been to ranges all over the country without issue. What an odd establishment. We were hopeful to find a good range in our new home area, but this one is NOT that. Disorganized, unkempt, and poorly run. Disappointing experience and would not recommend.
