If you are traveling in Germany near Emmerich, you should plan a visit to the Wanders Hotel in Eltener. This is a really nice hotel operated by Theo and Bettina Wanders. They are a very charming couple with a very international background. Theo was a Navy submarine office for the Netherlands and Bettina was born in Puebla, Mexico. They met learning salsa lesson in the community. The hotel is over 300 years old and Theo has made it into a very modern facility while retaining the old charm of the hotel. The restaurant features some traditional German cooking handed down from Theo's Mother, so you can feel you are part of a true German family. The village is a very nice place to visit and walk around. I had the opportunity to visit during the tulip season and got a visit a local farmers market Bettina suggested. I was able to purchase some locally made cheese by a dairy farm Hof Zum Walde (translation Forest Courtyard) at a very reasonable price. It was 1/4 the price of the same cheese at the Amsterdam airport and very fresh. They provided sample as well. The honey clover and Fenugreek makes me want to go back soon. read more

History

Established in 1798.

Die Familie Wanders ist seit 1637 in Elten und hatte damals Landwirtschaft und Getreidehandel. Erst später kamen noch Bewirtung und Übernachtungsmöglichkeiten für Wanderer und Auswärtige dazu. Das Haus Wanders zählt heute zu den ältesten gastronomischen Familienbetrieben am Niederrhein. Im Jahre 1798 wurde der Betrieb so vergrößert, wie man ihn heute -in der siebten Generation- vorfindet. In steter Regelmäßigkeit hatte einmal ein Theodor und dann ein Wilhelm Wanders das Hotel betrieben. Heute wird die Tradition durch Bettina und Theodor Wanders fortgesetzt. Das denkmalgeschützte Gebäude wurde im Jahre 1994 liebevoll und detailgetreu renoviert. Das Hotel-Restaurant Wanders beherrscht auf vornehme Weise den Marktplatz im Herzen von Elten und ist seit Jahrhunderten Zeuge der wichtigsten Ereignissen und Veranstaltungen des Dorfes, die vor unserer Haustür stattfinden.

I live in the area of Hoch-Elten and visit the mountain regularly, including this restaurant…read more Yesterday, I visited the mountain with a friend and we decided to eat something there. We enter the terras and greet the rest of the people there. Everythings fine, the sun is shining, we order drinks and decide about what to eat. When I notice the boss(waiter) of the restaurant walking back inside, I signal him that we are ready to order. The man turns to me and verbally humiliates me, until everyone gets dead silent, and then continues to act social to another table in a fake manner. What a scary and unstable person. There was absolutely no reason for his psychological abuse, at all.
