He has represented me…read morein several court cases: 1) I paid $3,500 to a tax relief company that promised to negotiate with the IRS to reduce my indebtedness. The next year I received a tax refund that eliminated the debt. The tax relief company did not engage in negotiations with the IRS for a reduction. Michael sued the company for deceptive business practices because at the time I paid the money they already had information about my income and the upcoming refund. The company retained an attorney and later agreed to settle. I received the entire $3,500 back and Michael got attorney's fees. 2) A former healthcare provider disclosed my private information without my consent. Michael sued the provider for violation of the Confidentiality of Medical Information Act.The provider retained an attorney and later agreed to settle. I received a monetary compensation and Michael got attorney's fees. 3) In 2016 I filed with the Board of Psychology two complaints against a psychological assistant and her supervisor. When the investigations were still pending, the assistant obtained a psychologist's license. In August 2019, she reached a settlement with the board and agreed to a 5-year probation. In January 2020, the supervisor surrendered her license. However, in June 2019 they sued me for civil harassment alleging that my complaints were purportedly "fabricated" and that I purportedly "defamed" them by posting negative Yelp reviews that ruined their practices. Michael filed an anti-SLAPP motion which was erroneously denied. The appellate court reversed the denial even though the plaintiffs' appellate attorney had over 40 years of experience and was fighting tooth and nail. After the appeal, the case was dismissed and the plaintiffs paid attorney's fees. My reviews are still posted. 4) In 2019 Michael agreed to represent me in a civil case which is still ongoing. I am suing the former psychologist and her assistant (see (3) above) for engaging in deceptive business practices. Because the former psychologist had a malpractice insurance policy, the insurer was forced to provide a defense. The insurer retained an attorney with more than 40 years of experience in medical malpractice. The defense attorney has essentially unlimited financial resources and did everything imaginable to dismiss the case as well as to stonewall discovery. Even though Michael is a solo practitioner and has a very limited budget, he successfully defended me against two demurrers, a motion for judgment on the pleadings and a motion for summary judgment. Recognizing that the defendants cannot prevail on the merits, the defense attorney attempted to disqualify my attorney. This attempt failed. Despite gross disparity in experience and financial resources, the defendants' attorney was unable to dismiss the case even after more than 3 years. 5) In 2020 Michael agreed to represent me in a family case involving a dispute over spousal support. My ex-husband was represented by two attorneys who had significantly more experience and specialized exclusively in family matters. Opposing counsel argued that I must pay spousal support for the rest of his life. After a six-hour trial, the court rejected all arguments advanced by opposing counsel and sided with Michael who argued that I hadn't owed any spousal support since 2016. The court then ordered my ex-husband to pay attorney's fees. 6) In 2021 Michael agreed to represent me in a civil case where I asked to rescind a gift that I gave to my ex-husband in 2017 as a result of my illness. My ex-husband was represented by an experienced attorney who filed a demurrer challenging the complaint on multiple grounds, including on the basis of the statute of limitations. Michael successfully defended me against the demurrer. The court accepted Michael's arguments and rejected all arguments advanced by my ex-husband's attorney who had significantly more litigation experience and regularly serves as a judge pro tempore. Although I am not a lawyer myself, I hold the degree of Master of Legal Studies from Stanford Law School. The degree entitles me to teach law and conduct research in the area of law. During my studies at Stanford, I took Advanced Legal writing and coursework where I produced scholarly papers to pass the class. I am thus qualified to judge Michael's legal writing and can tell that it is spectacular. Michael is brilliant (I concur with another Natasha who reviewed Michael before me :)) and his writing is lucid, compelling, concise and cogent. That for Michael English is a third language (not even a second language) and he writes So Very Well is utterly amazing. If you speak Russian or Hebrew, Michael can distill complex jurisprudential concepts to you in accessible form in your native language. Michael is infinitely available on the phone any time I have a question. He has been a true blessing in my life. Highly recommended!!

I worked with Dhaivat Shah and recommend him. Dhaivat delivered a good outcome and gave great legal advice. He was able to separate what mattered to me personally from what mattered legally - empathetic but professional. His experience is broad, and he knows how to think and what to focus on big picture. He protected what I communicated I cared about, and anticipated potential issues I didn't yet know to flag. I felt listened to and taken care of throughout. Because of this experience, I would go to Dhaivat for a wide range of legal matters in the future. My matter wasn't very large for a firm this size, but I got the focus, attention to detail, and respect I would have expected as a bigger client.

Case number RG19002294, Alameda County Superior Court, California…read more Fee arbitration was done through JAMS. Case Ref. No. 5460000673. Arbitrator: Hon. John W. Thornton, Jr I had an employment case. My first lawyer left my case and she put a lien on my case in order to get her fees. I hired Grellas Shah LLP to finish up the employment case and fight the lien my first lawyer put on my case. Dhaivat Shah and other 2 lawyers worked with me. The KEY in my case was a term sheet, a short version of a settlement agreement, that was signed at a mediation. It was NOT signed by all parties. So the judge in my employment case ruled it not enforceable to settle the employment case. I signed it because I was "pressured" and I was lied to by my first lawyer. I was made to believe that it was just a document to sign to show we made progress because we didn't have enough time to finish up everything on the same day. The full and complete settlement agreement would be sent to me a few weeks later and if I don't like that one, I can simply walk away from it and there would be NO settlement. But I don't have evidence to prove that. No video with audio or written record of what I was told at the mediation. Dhaivat told me I had a strong case (against my first lawyer who put a lien on my case for her fees). About a potential fee arbitration, he said "If you win (and I think you will win), you can seek reimbursement of your attorney's fees and other costs but it is not guaranteed that you will get 100% of them reimbursed." He gave my case to Joseph Guzzetta, who represented me in the fee arbitration. About the cost of the fee arbitration to remove my first lawyer's lien on my case, Dhaivat said "It could be 20-30k. But if the other party tries to expand the issues and the arbitrator does not stop her, I could see expenses of more than 100k". He later said it could be 20-30k if it is a narrow arbitration. But when I questioned him about the cost later he told me my arbitration was not a "narrow" one. The real cost, the attorney's fee Grellas Shah billed me, exceeded 120K. I was given a good offer before the fee arbitration, Dhaivat did recommend to take that offer. I made decisions based on the wrong information I got. E.g. I had a strong case and the cost would be low unless the judge allows her to expand the issues etc. I gave a counter offer and Dhaivat said this may work. But the other party went straight to fee arbitration and I lost all the money in dispute and I had to pay attorney's fee for both sides. A loss of about 440K. I could have got about 210K had I accepted their last offer before the arbitration. We didn't want the signed termsheet to be admitted as evidence, but the judge ruled against me. It was NOT signed by all parties to settle the employment case, but it was still a binding contract, I learned this myself during the hearing. Too late! Imagine the SHOCK I got! I checked the bills and I believed some hours billed to be questionable so I reached out to Grellas Shah LLP and said I had plans about fee arbitration and maybe more. The law firm terminated our attorney client relation immediately! I celebrate my birthday on 4/25 and today I'm turning 40 and my "birthday gift" is the "order of discharge" letter of my bankruptcy case. I don't have a regular working permit and I am doing my PhD, so I get only about 2k a month as stipend. I had a temporary working permit and worked for a company about 3 years before I was wrongfully terminated. I constantly worked overtime but I was never compensated for those overtime hours. So I worked hard and got paid little for about 3 years, then the employment case and this fee arbitration case lasted about 4 years and maybe a little more. In total, more than 7 years, and the little money I saved , about 30k or so, by eating cheap food, like McChicken (it was 1 dollar apiece back then), ramen noodles etc. and the pain and frustration and anger etc all these sufferings. In the end, my life got ruined.

When I resigned from the company I requested payment of my forfeited hours of vacation but was rebuffed. I retained Jonathan Jackel after interviewing several other law firms. I hope he is not offended by my comments, but I choose Jonathan because he was the most down-to-earth individual of all the attorney's interviewed. He didn't appear to have a huge ego and he came across as genuine and trustworthy. Also, in my opinion it is important in wage claims cases, particularly in front of the DLSE, to have an attorney who knows the system and who doesn't come off as a slick corporate attorney. On to my story, the company fought my claim and at a DLSE hearing Jonathan represented me while a large corporate law firm attorney from Los Angeles represented the employer. The result was a victory in the DLSE hearing for $33K. But all was not over. Of course my former employer appealed the case to the Superior Court of CA. This meant we started all over again and it eventually ends up with a trial. Although the process took about 3-years due to the court system, we eventually went to trial in front of a Judge, known as a "De Novo" or "bench trial." Again, the slick corporate attorney from LA representing my former employer and Jonathan Jackel representing me. We met beforehand to prepare, even meeting on a Sunday for several hours (wow). Jonathan was well prepared with a trial binder with all exhibits numbered, organized and easy to find. He encourages his client to participate and read all of the materials. Come Monday we start trial, Jonathan makes his opening statement and then I take the stand for the next 4 1/2 hours. Just like the movies, the defense attorney tries to get me to slip up on the witness stand, Jonathan does what he needs to do when appropriate and by the end of the day the judge said she was ready to give us her verdict. Despite the tactics of the defense attorney and their witness who lied, Jonathan stuck to our case and we were victorious, winning a judgement of $48K plus attorney's fees which I am guessing will be about another $17K back to me, for a total of approximately $65K. I highly recommend Jonathan, he is ethical, intelligent, witty and most of all, effective. He knows labor law and how to present an argument on behalf of a plaintiff.
