We did the dirt trail and though there were parts that were steep, it was fairly easy to navigate in just our regular sneakers & jeans. There were lots of people trail running, many walking the paved path, it was such a fun way to get a look at the city.

August 26-29, 2025 - La Pine, OR…read more We've stayed at La Pine Campground a few times over the years, and each visit reminds us why we keep coming back. The campground is divided into three loops, each with its own character. The North Loop offers water and electric hookups, with sites that are more widely spaced than the others--something I really appreciate. That extra room makes it feel quieter and more private, and it's probably where we'll book our next stay. The Middle Loop has full hookups, while the South Loop is the busiest, featuring full hookups as well as some cabins. . There are many hiking/cycling trails (dog-friendly), and the Deschutes River runs through the campground. There is a short hike to a waterfall, and a large dog park. Unfortunately, we were a bit restricted in our outdoor activities because of the smoke from the two fires in the area. There was actually ash falling on one of the days. Also, there had been several sightings of a mountain lion in the area, so that added a bit of caution to our activities. Nevertheless, we will definitely come back.

Some sites are fairly tight, while others had some nice room. The trails here were very enjoyable. Serene surroundings around the river and through the trees. We saw lots of deer, birds, and other critters scrambling about. I'm sure it would've had a slightly different feel during peak season, but we very much enjoyed our night and day of off season.

Very gentle 10 mile loop trail that is best suited for mountain biking. I hiked it with no problems…read more- the bikers gave a shout out and always said thanks for hopping out of the way. I have a knack for going the wrong way, and I did it here but got back on track within half a mile. There are dozens of cross tracks in this loop and it's super easy to saunter down the wrong one. I use the downloaded map from All Trails and keep the GPS on. I can make a quick check to make sure I'm not headed off the edge of the world. Hat is essential, there is no cover here. No potty, no water - so be ready to make due. Did I mention there is no cover? About 4 miles along I really needed to pee but dang it's no fun out in the open like that. I finally saw some bushes and got in my girly squat and then I heard a bike coming down the trail!!! Dang! It startled me and of course I peed a little on my pant leg trying to get myself back together. Grrrr. But hey! It dried quick enough and besides, who cares!! Not me.

Horse Butte trail is a 9 mile bike/hiking trails that loops around from Horse Butte towards the…read moreArnold Ice Cave. I haven't hiked the whole trail, only parts near the butte itself. As with other Deschutes National Forest trails, Horse Butte offers great scenery and hiking near to town. If you climb the butte, be ready for uncertain footing. This is a red cinder cone so there's lots of small lava rocks that can cause you to loose your footing.

Pioneer Reach comprises the portion of the Deschutes River Trail that passes through downtown Bend…read more From the north going south, it starts south of the First Street Rapids (the FS rapids are actually in the River Run section), continues along the river at Pioneer Park and Pacific Park, jumps in-town along Brooks Alley, back to the river along Drake Park and then south to Millers Landing Park/McKay Park just shy of the Old Mill district. As such, it's a pretty well-traveled section of the trail. I think it epitomizes one of the great features of the city: easy access to beautiful walking paths.

This part of the Deschutes River Trail is gorgeous, but not my favorite. It takes you by first…read morestreet Rapids, which I typically drool over (because I really want a kayak) when I pass by. This section of the river will take you by a canyon with nice trees and a swan or two. It is pretty wide, making it great for groups, bikes and baby strollers. This trail will take you by Pioneer Park or Firt Street Rapids Park, which are nothing to overlook themselves. There is not much uphill and is a pretty short section of the trail. I typically take this trail when I am hiking from the other sections of the Deschutes river trial. Overall I wouldnt choose this section of the Deschutes River Trail over the North or the Old Mill sectoins in town, but it is a nice option if you are close by.

Tumalo Falls was an amazing adventure and one of the highlights of our trip. We chose the loop…read moretrail so we could see all of the waterfalls, and it was absolutely worth it. One of the most exciting parts was crossing the river several times. In some places there were bridges, and at one point we had to carefully balance across a log, which made the hike even more fun and memorable. We visited in April, and there was still a little snow on the trail. The weather was beautiful, but I would recommend bringing traction spikes if conditions are slippery and hiking poles for extra stability. The waterfalls were spectacular, and the scenery along the trail was breathtaking. It was a perfect mix of adventure and natural beauty. I'm sure I'll return one day with my kids to experience it all again.

The fire pits are nice to but they cemented the bottom of them. They need to have more holes for air flow. Still I'm grateful to have those. Love the river trail as well. So beautiful! It's been awhile since we've been here. No snow this time but that's ok. Still peaceful and beautiful and not far at all from Bend.

Went to a reunion picnic day here. There was a large pavilion area with a grassy/cement seating…read morearena. There were bathrooms but I never used them. There was limited shade on the park, just under each tree. The playground consisted of two baby swings and two big kid swings and three rock structures. No shade so bring sun screen in the summer I think the park went a bit of the way down with walking paths but we didn't venture far. Lots of parking. To enter you can't take a left into the park right after the light, so go down a bit and turn around.

This park is a great use of the dry cannon. It has a bike/walking trail, picnic tables, a place to…read morebarbecue, a rock wall to climb. On the other side of the highway there is a baseball diamond and some tennis courts. This is a vast improvement over the set up this area had 30 years ago. On this day we decided to explore and ride our bikes around on the trail and through the neighborhood after that. All the areas were in use and well maintained. There were many ways to access the park areas from the adjoining neighborhoods which I found refreshing. Plenty of parking and a tribute to our veterans. Originally, planned to be a the new Ray Johnson park, there is a memorial to our veterans in the park. What a great place to have a picnic or enjoy being outdoors.

Unlike the larger adjacent Lava Lake, Little Lava Lake is motor-free, so it's a good kayaking spot…read more - The campground, which is popular and can be crowded, offers very convenient sites very close to the lake. - No facilities other than primitive toilets (which seem well-maintained) - Good boat (kayak) launch ramp - Views of Mt Bachelor, Broken Top, South Sister - Little Lava Lake is the head-water of the Deschutes River, which for those who live here is kinda cool. - You'll find hiking trails all around the area, some marked, most not. One goes over to Lava Lake and branches off into the forest towards Mt Bachelor. There are also maintained trails nearby across the highway, such as Lucky Lake and Six Lakes (a bit further north up the road). The road to Lava Lake & Little Lava Lake - Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway, Hwy 46 - is closed during winter due to snow. The affected portions and timing vary with snowfall and melt. Access to LL & LLL from the north past Elk Lake stays closed longer, while the road from the south opens earlier. Drake Park has a lovely walking trail as well as water access, restrooms, picnic tables and large…read moregrassy areas. There is alot of street parking (4 hour max). There were people floating on paddle boards, there could be some good fishing within as well as alot of crayfish. There are beautiful homes along the waterfront as well as some resturants and downtown access from the parkway.
