So as a pairing located just a few hiking miles from each other, if you visit one, you must stick around to do the other. Especially since these waterfalls are located in a remote part of Oregon right off the Williamette National Forest Highway and not too far north of Crater Lake. Salt Creek Falls is the "main event" waterfall, but don't dismiss Diamond Creek Falls. It's quite impressive in its own right, and quite different from Salt Creek Falls. And if you are an outdoors waterfall enthusiast, you will appreciate coming to this area and getting rewarded with witnessing 2 waterfalls for the price of 1 admission. Let's get to Diamond Creek Falls... It's a manageable 3 mile roundtrip hike. Start by crossing over a footbridge. Along the way a posted warning sign mentions that Diamond Creek Falls pathway ventures beside the dangerous cliffside. Do not fret. You don't reach anywhere near a freefall dropoff. This sign should be ignored. Keep an eye out for blue ribbons that can help assist you in staying on the trail. A significant difference I noticed between Salt Creek Falls and Diamond Creek Falls is how Salt Creek Falls is a quick half mile (each way) visit to a lookout point. Diamond Creek allows you to much more connect with nature. It's a pleasant trek through the forest. Continuing on...pass over a fallen down log. Finally, you'll come upon a sign for Lower Diamond Creek Falls. This is the primary path leading to the base of the falls. Step down over another tree stump and you're almost there. There's one final footbridge to pass over down beside a creek and you'll start hearing water flowing. And...walk straight to the toe of Diamond Creek Falls. Diamond Creek Falls is a 120 foot cascading waterfall from top to bottom. It's much different than the 286 foot straight plunge from Salt Creek Falls. Salt Creek Falls is visible only from a distance. Diamond Creek Falls is good for sitting down on the rocks and admiring the setting. You can have lunch or a snack if you brought food. Lastly, when returning to the main part of the trail, you can venture higher to the possible "upper section" of Diamond Creek Falls, but I never attempted it further because I was content with the surroundings from the "lower Falls". I simply returned to the parking lot to finish the adventure. In all, both waterfalls have their own attributes and visiting them together makes for a fun filled half day of hiking in South/Central Oregon.

Been…read morecoming here for many years & have noticed a big difference as the trees around campground are dead, I think a beetle is killing valuable trees that provide most needed shade during the warm summers besides it looking sad without the greenery. The lake is slowly growing some sort of algae, I'm not a scientist so don't know the scientific name. Yet there are plenty of areas that are free of it & yet so stunning you can see the fish in the water, it's that clear & so very refreshing to take a dip in. The 7 1/2 mile hike is spectacular, picturesque at its best that pics don't do justice. With the lodge at about the half way point. Talk plenty of water should you decide to hike as it's worth the breath taking views. The caveat.. mosquito's lots of mosquitoes on the low spots of the marshy lake so be prepared with repellent. There's also hot springs! You can get there by hiking in, paddle boarding & kayaking. It's well signed if you decide to detour during the hike. It's also a popular spot for fishing so be prepared when campers or locals start their engines at o dark thirty. It isn't much of a problem because it's so darn relaxing you could take a nap midday if that's what you choose to do. New Berry National volcanic monument is nearby for an outing but be prepared as it's a rough ride but the sights are spectacular! So if you want to check out with very limited cell service, breath in that lake fresh air, get some exercise & have Bend, Sisters nearby than this is your campground. No power or water connections for RVs. We took our kayaks & paddle board & always have a spectacular time.

I had a few on and only reeled in one, but I was happy with my nice Kokanee. I tried different ways to interest the fish, but worms are what they really seemed to like. What I really didn't like about where we were had to do with people that had previously been there. We picked up quite a bit of broken glass. I wish people would respect the outdoors and everyone's right to enjoy it.

Both of these lakes have hot springs in them, but in my opinion, the hot springs at Paulina Lake are much better than the ones here at East Lake. But as with those springs be better in quality, you might find the East Lake springs to be less crowded. East Lake is a bit further away than Paulina, but very much worth the trek. Both of these lakes can be fished from shore or a boat. Sailboats are often found at these locations and make for some really stunning photos. You can hike the shore from around this lake and will have many photo opportunities if you are a fan of wildlife. All while hiking through this lake you can see the peaks from the Paulina Crater that constantly remind you, that you are traveling inside of an active volcano. If you have an interest in geology you need to come here and just soak it all in. Nearby there are cinder cones, shield volcanos, calderas, and obsidian lava flows all within a few square miles. If it's hot out and you need a break from the heat, this lake is a great option. Just remember to bring some cash for the fees and to respect the environment to avoid any tickets. There are public bathrooms, a public shelter building/room with a wood fireplace to warmup at or dry your wet clothes, and of course there's a very nice (wide) hill at a 45 degree angle for safe, fun sledding (and building snowmen - ha!). It's a $5 day use fee. I visited on Labor Day Monday and it wasn't so busy. Once you park, Salt Creek Falls is off to the right hand side but...Diamond Creek Falls (another very worthwhile waterfall to visit) is located towards the left hand side. So...I'd suggest visiting both. You get rewarded with 2 waterfalls for the price of 1 admission. The pathway to Salt Creek Falls Viewpoint is half a mile at most, but along the way there'll be a quick preview of the falls beside the staircase leading towards the trailhead. You can't miss it and you'll hear the falls loudly crashing down below. The hike to the viewing deck is casual. You walk through the forest. It's pretty quiet. Once you arrive at the lookout viewpoint, Salt Creek Falls is impressive. You get undisturbed looks at the waterfall. If your curiosity interests you, you can walk around past the platform for closer glances. I did venture out a little just to avoid the guardrail being in my pictures. But I would say...it's a very steep decline and footing wasn't so secure. Be cautious with your steps. You'll understand this while there. Btw...there were no signs indicating you couldn't venture past the viewing deck. It's up to you to decide how much further you'd like to explore. I noticed some people joined me on the cliffside, while others stayed on the viewing deck. In all, it doesn't take long to see Salt Creek Falls. It's definitely a refreshing breathe of air to be at another marvelous Oregon waterfall, and that's where making the next part of your visit better when you return back to the parking lot and continue onto the 3 mile roundtrip trail to Diamond Creek Falls. I won't say too much about Diamond Creek Falls. I can save it for another review, but I will say it's a complete 180 degree different type of waterfall and setting. You get more into the heart of nature. And you can stand at the base of Diamond Creek Falls looking right up at it cascading in front of your eyes in comparison to witnessing Salt Creek Falls from a vista point platform. They're both unique natural wonders in their own ways. If you're in the central part of Oregon, I'd make plans to come to Salt Creek Falls. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by two magical looking waterfalls that barely get recognition. I didn't know they existed prior to 2024, and I thought I had been to them all, lol. Goes to show...there always more to see, always more to discover. Getting out among the great outdoors is a beautiful thing.

Our guide was professional and knowledgable, and knew the ins and outs of dogsledding so we were able to ask lots of questions (my second favorite part). I love this little mountain bike trail. Though the trek to the top is a long and steady climb, it's…read moreworth it when you get to the top. From here you will have a downhill only section of trail to bomb down. This trial starts out off of Conklin Road and as far as I know there is no way to shuttle this. The uphill is pretty gnarly, but at least from my experience pretty steady. So you may want to bring a snack or two for energy. The trail follows a forest service road up to the top of a beautiful butte that is uphill only and separate from the downhill section of the trail. So you will not have to stop much for anyone passing you. When you get close to the top you will stat to notice the elevation increase and be able to witness some breathtaking views that are unique from this perspective of central Oregon. Once you get to the top, I would recommend taking a breather and getting some photos of the views. It's a good time to chill and have a snack. From here you will be ready to mob downhill. This is where things get super fun. There are a few rocky sections to watch out for, but for the most part this trial is pretty smooth and fast! As this trail is ways from any hospital you will want to use good judgment, but still, have fun. Be sure to stay on the designated uphill or downhill section that you are supposed to be on and you will have a five-star experience!
