My apartment door lock was becoming progressively stickier until this Monday when it froze and I was locked out. I immediately thought I would drop by Warshaw & see if they could help. I have to disagree with Lee P's review. The two brothers who own this place are very knowledgable. For instance, my handy guy went there with a broken welded dishwasher drain pipe and came back with some contraption made just for this. . I went in with a toilet flapper and even though it looked different they found the one that fits perfectly. Their prices are surprisingly lower than Home Depot and where else in Manhattan can you get a lamp rewired? Granted one of the brothers thinks he is a comedian but even if you dont like his jokes you can rely on what he suggests. Plus they give a treat to my dog. It's kind of tight in there and sometimes you have to wait. Extra star also to the other brother who was enduring a city dept inspection while I was there and given how the current mayor (the one termer with the fake name) is turning the screws on small business while he can't even register his income property with hpd-- our hero continued to help us customers without losing his cool. read more

I walked in with a friend saying "I need to get 1/2 inch screws". As I finished my sentence, the owner popped around the corner and said, "Follow me." I went to Warshaw Hardware because I wanted to patronize a business other than one of the big box hardware stores. I needed some supplies for a small repair job. They didn't have the first item, so I started to browse for some other supplies. An aggressive older clerk asked me what I was looking for. As I was still deciding my preferred course of action, I politely declined his advice, which was questionable anyway (mixing joint compound and plaster is a widely debated practice). The clerk then sarcastically told me I should hire a "handyman," which I would assume is not a suggestion he would have offered if I were not female, and wearing heels. Anyway, it is more convenient to shop at Lowe's, so off I go! read more

So helpful! I went in with a little furniture-connecty-IKEA-type-thing that was messed up, and I thought I needed a new one. I didn't even know what to call it. Carl was not condescending in any way ... and he didn't sell me a new one, he fixed the one I had. All very cheerfully, and while juggling other customers. This reminds me of another time I went in a couple of years ago and Carl came up with an easy, inexpensive solution to another problem. Warshaw Hardware is a GREAT hardware store. The owners, Carl and Edward are funny, friendly and generous with their knowledge and expertise. I was installing a sink and faucet for the first time ever. I had bought a power drill from Big Lots in preparation for the project. Thing is - I didn't even know how to use it! Not only did Edward take the time to show me how, he offered suggestions on how to do the installation efficiently without spending a lot of money.
