I've been running to Warshaw for 31+ years. They are always helpful, inventive, share their experience, have sound recommendations - and the tools I need. Prices are always fair, sometimes great, sometimes a bit more than a "big-box" / discount store. But the trade-off is not worth schlepping to another store, instead of supporting this one. We MUST keep the last of the independent / "they-will-find the whatever-whatchama-call-it" item / tool alive. If they don't have it today, they will get I tomorrow. They know their customers - from semi-self-sufficient ladies like me to commercial contractors, and treat everyone with the time and respect needed - humor and good cheer is a standard bonus. The late Messrs. Warshaw should be very proud of Carl and Ed: they run a great business, and provide their customers with the right tools and hardware, and superb "fix-it" advice - whether tangible or psychological. I do a great deal of household, electrical, plumbing, locksmithing ,and woodworking repair work myself: 50% of the time, I solve the problem with one stop at Warshaw; the other 50% of the time Warshaw is my first stop, then wherever else I may go to get the job done, I always end up with a last stop at Warshaw. read more

We've lived in the neighborhood for nearly 50 years and have been charmed, entertained, and amazed by the Warshaw brothers and their smooth-running operation. Too many times I've gone to Home Depot for a part of some kind they didn't have only to find it at Warshaw. It's one of those rare places where they seem to love what they're doing. And as you hang out for a few minutes waiting to pay you get to see the congenial relationship they have with all the professional plumbers, electricians, contractors, and carpenters working in the neighborhood. The amazing part is the variety of stuff they have crammed into that small space, It might look disorganized but it's totally organized in their heads. When I first moved to this neighborhood years ago, I asked my Super where to go for some hardware supplies. He told me to go to Warshaw, and I never looked back. They are what a hardware store ought to be - great and helpful people who know their business. Unlike the other hardware stores in this area, in part because they have been here so long, they know their customers, and often make helpful suggestions based on that knowledge. If they do not have something, they will order it for you - in short, full service in a small shop While many of the old neighborhood stores (the flower shop, the coffee shop, the bakery, the small diners) have gone out of business or moved, they remain - a reminder of what a neighborhood can and should be. read more

During this last six months or so, I have had two lamps repaired at Warshaw, The first was a VERY old, family, wrought iron floor lamp, For some reason it had just stopped working. A very pleasant young man from Warshaw picked it up and another eventually returned it -- in perfect working order! More recently I brought in a table lamp which had stopped working. Carl looked at it for a few seconds, barely touched it and, miraculously, it was working again!. He said he slightly bent something or other right there in front of me and didn't charge me for the few seconds' work. If Carl ever gets tired of his work with Warshaw (and let's hope he doesn't) I think he could have a successful magic act. read more

I have lived a few blocks from Warshaw for 33 years and they are my "go to" place for all of my hardware/household needs. This family-owned business has been there for years and the owners are SO knowledgeable and helpful. Although the shop is small, they always seem to have what I need and often give me helpful tips on whatever project I am working on. After SuperStorm Sandy, they stood outside the store to sell batteries and candles at below market prices as opposed to some stores uptown which was price gouging on these items. It was cold and rainy and they did not have power but wanted to serve the neighborhood. We need to support small neighborhood businesses like this. read more

I cannot say enough good things about Warshaw. Warshaw is an old school, local hardware store that's been in the neighborhood for decades - multi-generation, family-owned, run by brothers Carl and Ed (and their kids). This is the place the plumbers, electricians, contractors, professionals, etc. go for supplies and advice. I live down the street, and they've been helping me for years - not only with house & hardware issue, but odd one-offs like building a small ramp for my elderly dog. If they don't have it they'll try and get it for you. read more

The BEST, classic hardware shop ever! Helpful,patient & polite to the n-th degree- a/c's figured out and installed, vac bags NO one else had, & great place to find what you never knew existed! 2a/c's bought online came rattling so these guys came to my rescue - figured out exactly the size, power, vent location etc - functions amazingly superior to anything ever had since mid 70's!They Figured it out! Came to look for a mouse trap. had no idea how many there were. the service was excellent. she showed me all the types and which was best to suit my needs asking me questions such as if i had pets or children and even the size of the mouse. after the 20 minute discussion, we decided on the typical one and she even told me what bait to use! wow excellent. no commission. i even told the manager about her. couldn't ask for more. and the store was clean and stocked. Warshaw Hardware is the best hardware store hands down! The people who work there are experts, knowledgeable and helpful about every aspect of hardware related issues and materials. Other big name hardware stores do not have experts like this who know their craft. I brought in a broken sink stopper and the owner figured out how to fix it in 2 minutes. I'm known as "Will I am" to Carl and "Good lookin" to Ed. Two great guys. I wish I had met their father. I'm sure I would have liked him as well. They always have what I need or they do their best to get it for me. I'm glad I found them for our school and wish I had a clone of them in my neighborhood. This is a great spot in NYC. Recently moved to the city, and needed a few supplies to get set up in a new apartment. The guys at Warshaw were very helpful with getting me everything I need. They have some really cool old-fashioned lightbulbs that add a great touch to the room. Now that I know they repair lamps, I'll be taking them one to fix. Great "real" hardware store in Manhattan! Open Saturday morning which is a major plus!! Immediate and knowledgable customer service. Came in thinking I needed a certain repair product. Today I went in to buy a packing box, and instead of selling me one, they found a free used carton, helped me pack my xmas presents, gave me a bag of packing peanuts, NO CHARGE. I had a gut renovation project for 6 months and I had to buy many items from Warshaw from silicone, nails to compound. If they did not have the item I was looking for, they ordered it and I had the item in two days. It is great to have them in the neighborhood. The prices are either the same as Home Depot's or lower.
