This shelter has an unreasonable set of standards for adoption, unfortunately resulting in the abusive retention of animals. I believe their standards make it less likely for any animals their to be adopted. If you want to adopt from this shelter make sure to have vet records that comport with AAHA standards for animal treatment, or take the easy option and obscure any ownership history and save an animal from this abusive shelter. read more

They took my bengal cat and her kittens because they were illegal they cold not release them to me. The lady told me that a situation like this had happened before, in that case they had to release the bengal cat to someone in Connecticut because bengal cats are legal there. I told them I have a friend willing to take my cats in Connecticut. She said the cats will have to go through adoption. I went to check on my cats today and she told me she already adopted them. I told her the cats means everything to me. I expressed that I bought the cat right after a hard time in my life and my cat was there to comfort me and gave me emotional support. I asked the lady "I thought you was going to help me get my cat adopted to a friend so I can at least visit her in Connecticut ".The lady then started being a "Karen" and told me "well I don't really care, all you need to know is that there are in a good home. And just because ur friend put an application in that doesn't mean they were goin to get pick for adoption." She then preceded to tell me I don't seem fit to care for a cat anyways. I had done nothing but gave my cat the best life she could possible have. Now I can never see my cat who I had raised since she was 4 weeks, she is now 9months. She is not just a cat to me, her name is Malu, she's a sweet bengal cat and very shy. I treat her like she's my daughter, she is very spoiled and well cared for. The lady is pure evil and has no heart or compassion. Fooled me in thinking I would see my cats again then goes and get them adopted behind my back. To the people that adopted my cat please reach out to me. I am Malu's father, I have no way in contacting you this is my desperate attempt to see my cat again. Terrible reviews from 2015, 2017 and 2018, and this one in 2022 should NOT be ignored. The Director of this facility should finally try paying attention to her problematic employee issue. I do feel bad for the animals as they are innocent and for the other nice woman who worked there as she seemed a decent person. So to them, I am sorry. There is one rude woman who works there (who has been mentioned in other people's reviews) whom they allow to speak to people who walk in. Why after years of people pointing out that this woman is NOT suitable to deal with the public you allow her to continue is a mystery. Tax payer dollars at work paying the salary of this city employee to be entirely rude to people who just want to help by adopting animals in need- unacceptable. I had a pet cat pass last year of kidney disease and this witch of an employee had the nerve to immediately say out loud, to my face, "Seven years old died of kidney disease?! Did you put her on a special diet?" I nearly wanted to burst into tears right then and there but I waited until I got in the car. My cat had a congenital issue that never would have been picked up at any regular vet exam because it took an ultrasound to find out that she was born with smaller than usual kidneys. Also, I struggled on a daily basis to get her to eat ANY food at all! I spent day after day trying every food imaginable just to get my cat to eat enough food each day to continue living on top of trying to manage her kidney failure issues. I did this in conjunction with advice from the vet, so to be asked after my cat is DEAD did I feed it a special diet to keep it alive- what in the actual f***!!! Was this a real question from a real human being!? Disgusting. I won't go much further because it got worse when she asked me how my other cat who was 14 years old and died 5 years ago died. Uhm.. CANCER. She was 14 and had stomach cancer! I spent thousands trying to save her. What on earth? Her facial expressions and reactions, tone and comments were entirely RUDE, just rude. While it seems they take care of these animals well, they don't seem to actually want to adopt them out to a stable, caring home with this line of crazy, rude and repulsive comments and questions. I have been a cat mom for over 20 years to many cats and have loved them all and cared for each as best I could. This employee needs to be stopped from having public interactions due to having no 'bedside manner' of a health professional/vet. Seriously. read more

I have never felt more unwelcome while trying to adopt a kitty in need.

Cats dogs and friends Nobody really knows the number of homeless cats and dogs in this country. I've seen estimates of up to 70 million homeless kitties alone. Only one in ten puppies born in this country ends up in a permanent home. These are horrible statistics and not much will be done until irresponsible people learn to take care of their animals and that starts with making sure they are spayed and neutered. Cats and dogs are not endangered species, they need to be controlled and not encourage to breed. Animal shelters like the one in Warwick are places where cats and dogs are offered for adoption. Frequently adult animals and not little kittens or puppies but wonderful creatures nevertheless. The amount and types of cats and dogs offered varies from time to time and it sometimes require patience to find the right animal for you but it is well worth the effort. If you are looking for a four legged creature to share you life with and that will give you unconditional love and affection, shelters like this should be the very first place you look. You just might find a best friend forever. read more

I do rescue work, I'm a licensed animal health & behaviorist! I had a situation with a cat they adopted out, the person who adopted the cat (3 years ago) stated cat became very aggressive they wanted to surrender the cat to our rescue! We agreed! I personally agreed to work with this cat, to evaluate, then would assist with any my refs/ accommodations that the cat would need in place to find a forever home! The shelter intervened, told us the cat needed to be euthanized, and should of been from beginning!! Deb the cat room director stated "unfortunately they often have to euthanize cats/ dogs that are aggressive/deemed not adoptable!!! We exhausted every option we had, trying to help this cat! Deb was aggressive, unprofessional, and should not be in this field of work! This absolutely makes me nauseous to think they euthanize due to aggressive personality's etc. , I will tell you from my training and degrees in this field of animal health and behavior, these animals are absolutely able to be rehabilitated, These animals are not born aggressive and mean, there's always a reason behind it! When a dog or cat is abandoned, surrendered, neglected, abused, etc. their hearts become broken, it takes time & patience, with the help of people like myself, we can work with them to assure they get the help they need, their confidence needs to be rebuilt, their trust in humans needs to be rebuilt, with a little extra love, patience and help, all these animals will be adoptable again! So instead of helping them to get to this point they'd rather just euthanize them! This is absolutely horrific and this shelter should be ashamed of themselves! I was trying to adopt a dog. They said sorry you have another dog in the house. The other dog in the house was training to become a therapy dog pre-covid. My dog that passed in October was over 17 years old in her previous home she was abused by the man of the house and hit with a broom. She was scared to death when my husband got close or if someone was sweeping the floor. But we gradually got her use to both. it takes time and patience. I am truly sorry that Warwick animal shelter feels that way. I guess they feel a dog in a cage, alone is better than having a big back yard, someone to love them. Terrible experience here, I was on petfinder when I saw a cat who was hit by a car & lost his leg, I felt so bad for him & thought he might have a hard time finding a home. I decided I would give him a home. I sent an email to see if he was still available, they said yes & sent me an application. I then made plans to meet him. I met & fell in love with him to then be told the next day he was already promised to a "rescue with an approved adopter". Not sure why they let me meet him & called my vet office, if he was already promised to a rescue with an adopter already approved. Or why a city kill shelter would choose to send a cat off to a rescue(out of state) causing the animal stress & lose the adoption fee money to the rescue, when they have an adopter with a loving home there. No one will tell me the name of the rescue after I asked several times. Very fishy. I wanted to donate to that rescue since this shelter turned down the brand new carriers,treats, beds, toys..etc I tried to give them.(which I donated to my local no kill). I wasn't going to leave a nasty review because I didn't want to deter people from adopting. I highly recommend The Pet Refuge, Care for animals, & The Humane society if you also had a bad experience here, I should add they felt the need to call me & tell me "They didn't need my donations & that they are not allowed to tell me the name of the "rescue". UPDATE!! I was told several times the reason they couldn't approve me is because the rescue already had an approved adopter, well that was clearly a lie because I found him on youtube, petfinder, & the rescue in CT called Passion 4 Paws! Up for adoption posted on the 22nd of November. They told me he was adopted the 19th of November. The photos are in the comments of this review until they delete them. They changed his name & story slightly but it's obviously the same cat. Same markings & same leg amputated. So not only did they lie to me, they denied this cat a loving home, & for no reason. I'm sure they warned the rescue not to adopt to me but I may still try. Also they contacted a coworker of mine(completely unprofessional) by phone & social media asking her if "she could talk to me & have me remove my review". If they had an issue with me they should have talked to me about it not lie & say he's adopted. I cannot stand liars. read more

I lost my little dog suddenly and was heart broken. Someone at my vets sent me here - I to had a great experience. Everyone there is very interested in placing the pets in a great home , They truly care about the animals in their care, they take such great care of them and are so happy for the animals when they get a new home. They also sent a care package home - with toys, leash, collar, food and my dogs bed... I make it a point to support any funding raising events they have ... as they take care of any medical needs the animals have - as well as dental work and training... My family has been adopting animals from Warwick for thirty years now. Debbie, Cat Adoption Coordinator, loves those cats like they're her own, and works incredibly hard to give them quality lives. They have a large open cat room where they roam free and adopters can visit without being rushed. I'm not as familiar with their current dog adoption process, but you can see on social media how hard they work to find homes for them, especially the "long-term residents". I'm currently being assisted in writing my review by my purring kitty, adopted from Warwick on 1/7/06. She encourages readers to consider adopting older, special needs, or generally harder to adopt pets. I always thought this was a great shelter and I still do as far as the shelter part goes. My problem is with the low cost neuter and spaying services they offer. Normally I'm 100 percent grateful for the work they do helping us that don't have a large amount of money to pay a vet. My cat went to be neutered last May and they ended up rescheduling him for July because they only found one testicle and he needed a larger surgery on his abdomen and testicle. Everything seemed fine but they told me they couldn't find the second testicle and he must've been born without one. They also offered to do blood work or an exam if when he healed he was still spraying. I went back two weeks later to tell them and was told it was too soon, I waited two months with a cat that I adore but has an awful problem with spraying every thing, every where. I called and talked to the nurse about getting him examined and she promised to have the vet get back to me and I believe that was last October. I never expected any services for free, I did expect a follow-up, especially considering the large surgery and the fact that he acts like an unneutered cat. Aside from spraying he just stalks back and forth like he has too much energy or something is bothering him. I am at the end of my rope with a cat that I fell so in love with I couldn't get rid of but a problem I don't know how to solve. The couple of veterinarian places I called tell me to go back to the vet that neutered him. So as far as ratings go I think they take great care of the animals uo for adoption but I think when you use their veterinarian that you get to see him once when the surgery is over. I think they should have a follow up program if they do surgeries there. read more

I recently adopted a little pet from the Warwick Animal Shelter and i had the best experience one can hope to have. Everyone there was very interested in getting this little guy a forever home. They allowed us to come daily to visit him until he was available for adoption. The fee was simply paltry and no one could possibly complain about it.....so little for so much. The staff is amazing, they welcome you in and make your visit so helpful. The care they give to these homeless pets is truly incredible. I visited the Warwick Animal Shelter about 2 weeks ago on a Wednesday afternoon. I was very impressed with the cat adoption room. It was very neat and bright, a comfortable place to meet the cats. The cats were all free to roam around except for one who was in his cage. All the cats were friendly and enjoyed being patted. Gally greeted me first. She is a petite little cutie. Heidi had her own little room that I peeked into. She looked excited to see someone and was jumping around. A horrible place because they let a poor cat suffer because they wouldn't let me adopt him. They kept making excuses to stop me from adopting the only loving adorable cat at their facility. They said they wouldn't let him go because he needed a company animal. Then I said that was not a problem. Then they said that he was very ill. And I'm like well he doesn't look ill but if you say so. And then they said well after he is adopted he needs to stay living within the state. At that point, I was like "seriously" you are just making things up as you go along. I wanted to take care of this wonderful cat and give him a home but they just wouldn't let me adopt him. To this day, i look at the wonderful life I've given the cat I eventually adopted from the Potter League, and I cry when I think that he is still probably at this shelter still because these people are cruel and selfish and wouldn't let him leave the shelter. They aren't doing anyone any good. Plus their facility is dirty and the cats have to share cages. It's gross. read more

Based on my experience, I am a big fan of the Warwick Animal Shelter. After our Leonberger passed away, I visited the shelter in search of a large, friendly, smart, and protective dog. At the shelter, a German shepherd formerly known as Goliath bonded with me in an instant. Before we adopted, the shelter director permitted a family visit in an enclosed area, where our trusted Cert. Vet Tech friend was permitted to give the dog a physical exam and test his behavior in the somewhat stressful environment. We adopted the six-year-old GSD who lived to the ripe age of 14. Our feeling for the adoption process as we experienced it was that we were quite appropriately being tested by the shelter as much as we were testing the dog--both parties in pursuit of a good placement. That degree of dedication impressed us immediately. Years later, when they were unable to provide us with a replacement for our dear shepherd, the Warwick shelter made inquiries at other shelters on our behalf. Ultimately, we had to adopt elsewhere, but we still have very warm feelings for the Warwick Animal Shelter. It is a clean, bright, and pleasant place and we are happy to continue to support it. read more

I adopted a tiny 3 lb toy poodle named "Chopper" from the Cranston Animal Shelter. He was found as a stray with hair so long and badly matted that he couldn't move, as I understand. My life journey with little "Koko" (name changed) was so amazing as he had so many fine qualities that I couldn't ask for a better dog. He was my partner, soul mate, true best friend, the love of my life and my protector. He passed away last April due to complications of a medical condition. I was devastated and am feeling very sad over his loss. I can't help but wonder how he ended up on the street as he was so adorable, tiny, walked well on the leash, house broken, lovable, very affectionate, rugged and tough when he was territorial. He must have been loved by someone. I miss him very, very much. The folks at the shelter were very nice, especially Susan. They lent me a little carrier for him for the trip home. He got along with my cockatiels and actually bonded with one of my rescue cockatiel. They were best buddies. Wish I could find another being either human or animal like him. He was one in a million. This place does not even deserve one star. I was looking to adopt a dog from this facility. At first there is an application that needs to be filled out, which to me was no problem. It was the visit that I didn't like. The main lady Debbie has an attitude and treated us like we were misfits like we didn't belong there and made us feel like we were incompetent. She didn't make eye contact with any of us while she spoke and what she said was inconsistent. Oddly enough I asked to see the dog and was told it was ok to to go for a walk with him once I grabbed the leash I was told I could go on the road and to stay away from other dogs and volunteers then it changed to only the parking lot and I gave her a look like which is it. Then on the way back from walking the dog Debbie came out and said when your ready I will take him. I said I am not done yet and she proceeded to grab the leash from my hand and she took him away. Then when I ask to take the dog back few minutes later she told me a BS story that the dog is on a schedule and it was his turn to go in the pen to run around and we can come back another day. Before I left I looked he wasn't there she lied to us. I was told to bring some documentation my next visit, that's when we met Anna Marie who was a bit cold when she talked to us. We were told that there were many applications that she needed to carefully go through each and every one of them by Saturday we would know definitely via phone call. I get an email the next day which was a Wednesday that the dog was adopted. What upsets me is that we spent time with the dog and he was quite comfortable with us. It was like we were setup to get our hopes up. It also seems that they were biased having already picked an applicant without giving anyone else concideration. read more
