This was my first visit and found the place very nice and appealing. Our waitress Hannah was very courteous and attentive. Now to the food...we started off with the seaweed salad which was very good. We then ordered 3 rolls the wasabi roll which was very good and No rice, the honey rainbow roll and eel avocado roll all very nice. We did have the mango fried ice cream for dessert, ok. Now to answer why it didn't get five stars. The pricing for rolls and salads all seem to be 1-2 dollars more than their other locations, you would think that they would be closer in price, also more expensive than Waterfront which is just as good just a little further to drive too. Maybe they will lower pricing as they grow but probably not. read more

I wrote a review 10 months ago saying sushi was good but service was poor. Tonight we sat for over 25 minutes being told twice someone would be with us. Waitress apologized saying they HAD been busy. We tried to order beers and they never came. We finally left. The restaurant was not busy, we were the only people on the patio. I didn't care for this restaurant. The menu had a lot of options where it was chef's choice for sushi and sashimi. We decided to get a couple of sushi rolls the we thought we would like and they did not have that much taste. Loved the atmosphere and decor. The pot suckers and shrimp Rangoon were delicious. (The pot suckers were some of the best I've ever had.) The Shrimp Tempura sushi was good but not impressive and for the California sushi I prefer Hy-Vee's over this one. Our waitress was great and we had excellent service with very little wait time. Went here for lunch - very reasonable lunch specials and the food was top notch. Me and the wife split a sushi lunch with a couple apps. Had the spicy garlic edamame and veggie spring rolls. Both might be the best versions in the area. And the sushi was excellent - might be my new fave spot for that as well. Daughter and I came here on a Friday night, with a reservation and during their soft opening. Was pretty busy. Service was great and prompt. The food was outstanding. We shared the gyoza, Marilyn Monroll and the crispy tiger shrimp with grand mariner and passion fruit aioli. It was all delicious! The only downside, which is not the fault of the restaurant, was a group of middle-aged men acting like they were at a sports bar. They were obnoxious, loud and swearing. Great atmosphere and unique decor. Very friendly waitstaff, and helpful with the menu. We had our 10 yr old son with us this time and saw a couple other kids there too, but it's a quiet and classy dining experience. Food was excellent, even for my picky eater. This place is amazing! The food was so good and fresh, but the service is what really made me give this place 5 stars. We went during a storm so right when we got our food the power went out, but the staff stayed on top of everything. Ordered right way then we we're forgotten 45 min later waitress came by said food should be out shortly 10 min later Chicken fried rice came. Plate hot rice barely warm!! This was left over fried rice with chopped gristle chicken. So greasy left film in my mouth. I have tried every new Wasabi restaurants they opened to see if they can really keep the quality sushi going. I visited Wasabi Ankeny and couldn't be pleased with the service and experience. Their sashimi is really fresh and always remind me of Hokkaido quality. I didn't really expect Iowa to have a Japanese restaurant as good as Wasabi considering Iowa is a landlocked state in the middle of America, but Wasabi really delivers. read more

We made it in to try the new Wasabi location in Ankeny. Went in for lunch and sat at the bar. The bartender was great and we had a fantastic show watching sushi being prepared. This is a really nice spot for dinner. The backlighting on the bar and walls, and lotus flower light fixtures, give it a beautiful look inside at night and a nice ambiance. They don't necessarily have the best sushi in the area but it's pretty good -- and the varied menu and full bar is a nice bonus you don't get at every other sushi restaurant. We started our dinner with two very good cocktails and and octopus fried dumplings for an appetizer. They were excellent, great flavor and perfectly cooked. For dinner we split a garlic pork ramen bowl (spicy), angry dragon roll, and wanton tuna tacos. The ramen was very good, just enough spiciness for someone who likes but doesn't love spicy foods. The sushi roll was finished off with no need for wasabi or soy sauce. The wanton tuna tacos (technically an appetizer) were very tasty. Overall this was an extremely enjoyable dinner in a great setting. I'm not going to argue that the sushi is As good as on the coast or even necessarily the best in Des Moines but it doesn't need to be. read more

This was our second visit since they first opened a couple of weeks ago and it was great both times. I am so happy to have a great sushi place in Ankeny finally! Ankeny Roll is really good. I'm not even a jalapeño fan but the shaved jalapeño is just the right touch. The chocolate "cake" is a mousse filled heaven you need to try! Very upscale, pretty location. Very nice staff. With the prices they charge, we expect outstanding food. This was lacking. My fried rice dish was very bland. I added lots of soy sauce to add flavor, which was a mistake due to the salt content. The sushi rice seemed dry like it was made ahead. All in all a meh experience. read more

Service was great - waiter was so kind and checked on us frequently enough. The new restaurant is beautiful and very modern. The food came out quickly for a Saturday night. The gyoza and crab rangoons were really good; they tasted fresh and taste like they were never frozen. We had the rock and roll, crouching tiger and one other sushi roll which were delicious. All was very good, we had a couple drinks and they were tasty too! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the service was not great. When we went in we were seated quickly and that's where it ended. Our server was very slow to get to us, and wasn't very friendly. We were going to get more drinks but after we got our food we never saw her again, until my husband went and asked for her. She had one other table, so having two tables doesn't strike me as very busy. Then she proceeded to ring us up telling about how great of a military discount they have, after noticing our USAA card but said we can get it next time.. why didn't you just give it to us then? Overall, the food is good, as are the drinks, and I'm not gonna let one bad server stop us from heading on back if we want sushi 4 minutes from us. read more
