Love the sushi here. It's not traditional but delicious. The place is tiny and busy so you better have a reservation or take out. I really recommend the shellfish roll. They perfer you pay with cash also. And I think they will deliver via car service for a charge if you pay by credit card over the phone. read more

I go to this Wasabi location pretty frequently and I found that lately service had been slacking a bit, but I kept giving them more chances as I enjoy the menu there the most out of all of the sushi places I've been to around here. But after my last visit I don't think I'll ever return again, at least not for a dine-in experience. ! If you don't want to read everything below, here is a breakdown! : -extremely slow and unfriendly service -rotten food -awkward, rude staff -place was disgusting inside, but this is not new as the upkeep seems to have been declining for quite a long time now. So here is my detailed experience: They were mildly busy, but no line up, a few tables empty, and at least 3 waiters that my friend and I could see. Still, as we stood in the entrance waiting to be greeted, no one acknowledged us. After about 5 minutes of being completely ignored by staff, we decided to seat ourselves. 5 minutes after THAT (we have now been in the restaurant for 10 minutes) a waiter came over and asked if we were here to pick up sushi or if we needed menus. We said we were dining in, and he seemed confused, but gave us two menus. The next staff member to come over only did so to say "Just so you know, you guys will have to move if a bigger group of people comes in." There was no offer of bringing us to a different seat, no apology for the lack of service. It all felt a little uneasy. Finally a separate waitress came to take our order, she was sociable enough. Our food was pretty quick, they gave us two free rolls as usual. Problem? One of the rolls, which the girl claimed was mango, tasted and smelled fishy. She either unknowingly gave us fish, which is mildly gross for a vegetarian, or they gave us very rotten mango. When we were just about done, we heard the second staff member that had spoken to us telling a man that they would move us from our seats so his group could sit down. The only reason this didn't happen was because the man seemed shocked and said "Oh my god, no, they look like they're just about finished, we can wait!" (Thank you, whoever you are, sir) When we finally got our bills the girl asked how much I'd like to tip which I've always found awkward and unprofessional for servers to do. When I only tipped 80 cents, she immediately became pretty cold. My friend and I spent the duration of our meal feeling extremely unwelcome and a little grossed out, and we left feeling upset. All we wanted was a roll of sushi and some miso soup as a little treat after a rough week. My favourite sushi place in Halifax! Their sushi is always fresh and delicious. The servings are generous and they offer a discount for cash. They usually bring extra portions as a sample for most orders either in house or take-out. Service is always great and is relatively quick. Best experience in a restaurant in a long time. Food was good but the service was absolutely amazing. We walked in and were greeted by three young men. All were genuinely excited to see us walk in the door as it was a slow holiday Monday and we were immediately seated and served. Fabulous new restaurant. I kept gawking around, looking for traces of the old Spartan, but nary a one remains. We were a party of four, two newbies and two fairly familiar with all things sushi. So, we newbies just sat back and let the others order. Fabulous fare, beautifully presented. The Boston Roll is like a party on a plate, what with all the red and black caviar sprinkled all over; looked like confetti. And we had spicy salmon roll, the green dragon roll, and tuna. They even added salmon nigiri to the plate as a little bonus. We also had a spinach salad and gyoza. I'm definitely coming back, especially since they give 10% discount if you pay cash. read more

I've been to Wasabi house a number of times, and every time I am disappointed. The service is VERY SLOW. I have vowed not to return after the last time I went with a friend and stood by the door and was not acknowledged by a server for 10 minutes, despite the fact there were open tables that just needed to be wiped down, so we ended up just leaving. The sushi is very very good, but for me the service is just too frustrating, I don't know if it is taking them a while to find their niche in the new restaurant or what, but I am not planning on returning. I also think they are closed right now because they had some sort of fire. I am going to stick to hamachi house! read more

The sushi is decent. I've eaten at many sushi places and this one is ok. Tonight was my third time eating here and my first time going to use their washroom after my meal. After doing so, I will never go back. I believe a bathroom (something you expect your customers to use) should be kept clean and look presentable. If it isn't, what the heck does their kitchen (a place your customers won't see) look like? Well there were cobwebs (it's December) with things hanging off them. So much dust and hair everywhere, no place to hang your purse and the sink looks like it has been caulked 1000 times over. It was dirty and grimy- something I would not expect from a place that serves food! I've heard many people say this place was great. I can only suspect that these people have never eaten at a fine food establishment. This place is gross. It's absolutely filthy. The tuna in the spicy tuna was grey! The tempura in the dynamite roll was chewy and tasty stale. Some pieces barely had rice on them! They came right away with a huge plate of sushi we didn't even order which was on the house. Which ok that's cool if the food was good. Well don't like crowded places where the next person is stranger than the last one. Cannot move and waiter doesn't understand your order. Everything looked good, taste was average, like the b-well sushi down the street. Guess Quinpool road isn't my favorite place for parking either. Not to mention every time I see a movie and look for a place to eat, this is not a place I'll be returning too. This place is absolutely amazing! We love this place so much, it's hard for us not to go back daily. We're so hooked we've been there 3 times this week. Staff is great, they do a great job as they're always busy. Excellent prices, you just can't beat the happy hour menu. You often get an extra role on the house which is fantastic. We love the spicy salmon, spicy tuna, Alaska roll, dynamite roll and shrimp tempura role. The sushi pizza is huge. Can't say enough good things about this place, we've recommended it to all our friends, and they've all been just as pleased as us. Okay, sushi obsessed. Happy hour is a great deal @ Wasabi house here! Plus, with a special extra roll from the chef, you leave full & with no regrets. You get what you pay for @ this little joint. The rice is generally soft and sticky so nothing falls apart. The fish is always fresh & the plates are appetizing! Service each time I've gone has been delightful, except for one time. There is one server whom I shall forever dodge when I go. She is slow, unpleasant, & very abrupt & forgetful. (Super curly hair; usually up in a ponytail) she totally forgot to serve the miso soup we ordered, didn't set us up with our chop sticks & napkins, & took a dinosaur's age to bring our bills. In fact, we had to go up to the front to pay in which she still did not attend to us. She's the worst server I've had anywhere in a long time. Thanks for the rant tho! Awesome sushi :) read more

Great little sushi place! Lots of selection! My girl friend and I stopped here yesterday for lunch. Both of us are sushi junkies, so we went in ready to judge. For such a small location I was impressed with the selection, and service. We sat in for about 2 hours ( not the fault of the restaurant, we tend to make having sushi an outing where we order one thing at a time keeping the menu as to explore many different items ) we started off getting the 3 piece sashimi, red snapper, white tuna, and salmon belly. Each item was fresh and delicious! We went on to order 2 rolls and maybe a dozen pieces of different types of the more traditional sushi. We were impressed by the selection. Being from Edmonton we had never tried the white tuna, butter fish, salmon belly and raw squid so naturally we were exited to test them out! Every cut of fish seemed fresh and tasty. During our visit we had 3 pots of green tea and we had received 4 free pieces of sushi! As for the two rolls we had the presentation was amazing. The ocean fire roll I would get again the next time I'm there. The Hawaiian roll how ever was very complicated and drenched in sauce, it would practically fall apart when trying to handle it. There was literally more stuff piled on top then in the roll its self. I'm not sure if this is an every day thing but if you pay with cash you get 10% off which is a nice incentive! I really cannot believe the enthusiasm being expressed for this restaurant... but that's Canadian patience and politeness for you, I suppose. While the food is passable (esp. the spicy miso, and they do a classed-up version of the sushi pizza), the service and overall disorganization in this restaurant is absolutely unacceptable. I've been here three times and the wait was longer during each one, topping off at three hours (!) as the wait staff, visibly stressed and confused, bumbled about the room apologizing to every single table. "Super fun" and "inviting", as another user put it? No. Stressful and claustrophobic. A real shame. I do hope this place gets it together - running a 15-table restaurant isn't brain surgery. read more

This is probably the best Japanese in Halifax. Situated opposite the Oxford Theatre on Quinpool Road, it is an obvious pre- or post -movie spot. The weekday evening we went it was pleasantly full with a mix of young families, students,men in suits and our older group. The sushi is excellent and very beautifully presented. Love love love this place! My boyfriend and I probably come far too often. The sushi pizza is out of this world, and I love the slightly unhealthier rolls with tempura bits and spicy sauce and all that (yum) but they also have very high quality fish that shines in plain nigiri or sashimi. If you prefer not having tempura bits in your maki or want to make any other change to your order they are extremely accommodating. Ordered delivery from here, was told it would be up to 1.5 hours (which was fine by me). I made my order and was told I was 1 roll away from free delivery. So I ordered one more california roll... before I even finished my breath I changed what roll to add to my order, and was told I couldn't change it, that the order had been sent. It took 5 minutes more to get them to change what roll I wanted. The order showed up in less than an hour (which was good news!). But unfortunately it wasn't my entire order. I called them to let them know and they began to argue with me saying it was my fault that I needed to be more specific with my order. I ordered shrimp tempura, and they gave me the "tempura shrimp roll". It was my fault for not telling them I wanted the appetizer I suppose... but why they didn't ask me which one I wanted is far beyond me. I also ordered the dynamite roll, and didn't get what I wanted. They informed me once again it was my fault for not stating I wanted avacado (I guess they give you the option, as well as the choice for spicy vs regular) so they assumed I was allergic and that I wanted it spicy... once again they should really just ask me. When I wanted nothing more than to end the phone call they kept arguing saying it was my fault, and they never offered to make the situation right. The sushi crystal combo that comes with miso soup and salad was wonderful. the dressing on the salad is a delightful citrusy mix and the kitchen graciously sent over a complimentary plate of salmon nigiri and salmon avocado rolls. This place has gone so far down hill. I got really sick last weekend off of their lunch special, the 'extra' they gave me smelled off and my receipt was covered in wasbai. My order was sitting in some kind of liquid, which I thought would be ok. but no. Don't eat here. Honestly the cleanliness of the restaurant (last time I ate in, I had hot water dripping from the ceiling onto my food) and food sanitation practices seem non-existent. read more

My partner and I ordered delivery from here once and vowed never to do it again. I live approximately a 10 minute walk from Wasabi, but one day we were feeling lazy and got delivery. It took over two hours to get our food and it was clear it had been made quickly and left to sit the entire wait. As far as dining-in this place is okay. The fish quality is okay, the rice is okay, the service is okay, the rolls are okay. I've eaten here quite a few times and honestly the biggest appeal is that they ALWAYS give extra free sushi, so you can always count on being full when you leave. My partner and I ate there last night and the free sushi seemed...old. There are at least 3 other sushi spots in Halifax I would recommend before Wasabi. However it is convenient if you live around Quinpool and excellent if you don't care about super high quality and just want to get full on sushi. I will probably go back at some point but I always know what to expect. read more

My first visit to Wasabi House. Ordered take-out (6 types of sashimi from the a la carte menu) on a Friday night. Service was prompt and courteous. Waiting area was cramped/non-existent. Sashimi was medicore--have had better in Halifax. Maguro was dry and stringy and both the smoked salmon and the butterfish tasted old. Sake was good however. Also appreciated the fact that Wasabi House offers tamago sashimi--not many places in Halifax do, unfortunately. Will probably stick to my tried and true when it comes to sashimi--Hamachi House on Morris. read more

So bad I joined Yelp to write a negative review. Forget that our order was messed up. Forget that it took 2 HOURS for delivery to arrive. The poor delivery man, who is definitely not getting tips at that rate, called us after 90 minutes to say that our order had been ready for over 30 minutes just not packed to go. So Pork Gyoza arrived cold and inedible. Dynamite roll was tempura shrimp and panko without so much as a sprig of cucumber to brighten it up. The spicy tuna also had more panko than tuna. This is absolutely the worst sushi I've ever had. Would go for supermarket sushi over this any day. I'm baffled why the reviews are so good and how this place is always full. read more

Just had lunch at Wasabi House. The room, furniture and waiter's clothes were completely filthy. Absolutely disgusting and unsanitary. And the good people of Halifax have never had good sushi if they think this place is great - very mediocre. Extra quantity always means low quality. Do not confuse the two. read more

Being an individual who also works in a restaurant I do not write this lightly because understandable mistakes are made but wasabi has horrible customer service. I will give it to Wasabi for their good deals and usually efficient service. Their issue is customer service on the phone and in person. On the phone they proceeded to speak way to fast, are very passive, dismissive and slightly rude. We ordered 5 rolls and 2 spicy miso soups. They gave us the roles and even extra which was great. Noticing the miso's did not end up in the bag I called back to ask if we could get them or what would be the result. Again, the lady was rude on the phone, didn't even make an attempt at an apology and told us we would be charged full price for it if we had to come back and pick it up for a second time. We went back got the soup and got charged for them without an apology for their mistake. Once we got home we noticed we asked for two spicy miso's and only one was spicy so again.. another disappointment. We also tipped generously knowing that there is a tip out and being a server its also good tip karma. read more
