But after my tall, black, competitive gymnast daughter's 9 year old check up we decided to go to a different pediatric practice. First, they didn't offer our prepubescent daughter a doctor to match her gender - and for transparency, we forgot to ask. That was our bad, and hadn't mattered previously. But prepubescence changes things. Second, my child is the height of your average 12 year old and has more muscle mass than kids her age due to the 15 hours a week of trampoline and tumbling training. This puts her BMI, that archaic methodology based around norms for middle aged white men, higher than it might be for an average 9 year old. So the idea that they'd use BMI on a child athlete is already a bit odd (for the record it doesn't work for adult body builders either), but to make matters worse they used her BMI as a reason to tell her that she's overweight and needs to watch what she eats. That should be a conversation that begins and ends with the parents of a 9 year old, as we still dictate the vast majority of our child's diet. But to do that to a girl child, knowing full well the harsh physical expectations put on girls and woman, is a deal breaker. I cannot justifiably send my kid to a pediatric practice that will require a therapist visit after. And it also seems weird that they do not take body variation into account, shouldn't they? We're not all built the same. I'm writing this review, a year later, in the hopes that other families don't experience something similar.

When my son was little, his head was quite "crooked". It was definitely bigger on one side in the back. Having seen tons of kids with helmets - I was stressed out and worried that I had not done enough for him early on. During our 6 month we'll visit, I pointed this out to Dr Sesala along with what I had read online about impacts to IQ, etc. finally, he cut me off gently and pointed at his head. "Look, my head is flat, I made it through med school, it will be ok ... the helmet isn't proven to work and is expensive. I don't recommend it for your baby" He was right. Baby's head straightened out by age 2. Second time I called him for my daughter. She was sent home from school with pink eye. Instead of forcing me to book and appointment and bring her in - he sent a prescription to the pharmacy near my house and told me to call back if it didn't look ok within x days. Then there was the time in the beginning of the pandemic. Literally March 17. My daughter came gently walking downstairs screaming in agonizing pain. I put her to sleep thinking once she wakes up from her nap, if still in pain, I'll call the doctor. Yup. She was in pain. I called Dr Sesala at about 5 PM and he told me to get her in right away and that he would wait for me. Yup. The doctor that just wrote me a prescription when she had pink eye told me to get my butt over there ASAP. We got there, he tried to pop her elbow back into her socket and wasn't sure if he was successful so we tried finding a place to take a "safe" X-ray. At that point, he looked as scared as I felt. Then my husband came in and gave her a high 5 with said broken arm. He gleefully told me to go home and stay safe. (Yes, practice had masks, gloves on and everything). You know when you can just tell someone cares? I am an anxious parent and I feel so seen when I have medical concerns. To say we ADORE her is an understatement. Our girls are always excited to see her and she's just so warm and kind to them. Our middle child had strabismus and Dr. Gati noticed a few signs when she was a baby and referred us to a top pediatric eye doctor before it was even the typical age to be diagnosed. With her suggestion we were able to work towards treating it much earlier than most. Dr. Gati also knows our family so well. We have a newborn and she had some redness on her eyes and Dr. Gati knew without looking at her records or notes that our oldest has severe food allergies and was quick to suggest the reaction could be due to food allergies given the history and suggested I keep a food log to see if this could be the culprit. I feel like most doctors would have just brushed it off but she knew to look holistically. The practice itself is also just a really special place. When our daughter got bit by a dog at the park I called a few minutes before they closed for the day for guidance. Some of the staff and a doctor offered to stay a few minutes late so our daughter could be seen in a familiar place instead of directing us to urgent care. With three kids we have our fair share of sick visits so we've seen all of the doctors at this point and have never had a bad experience. All of these doctors are wonderful, thorough and passionate. I could honestly go on and on about the ways they have helped us and gone above and beyond. MVP is truly an exceptional practice and we love them so much!

One thing I particularly appreciate is that she always asks for my daughters' consent before performing any procedures. This ensures that they feel comfortable throughout the entire visit. She genuinely cares about children and their health. I ask a lot of questions but I never felt like I was bothering her. My first couple of years there I did have some serious issues with one of the front desk staff, she was just very rude and unprofessional. However, it seems like she is no longer working there and the front desk staff is great! Isidra is always so helpful. I now bring my two children here, and I am very happy with them. Sometimes their is a wait but they are always willing to accommodate last minute schedule changes, so I totally understand. Will continue to come here as long as I live in the area.

That all being said, the overall office's professionalism and utmost care of patients has drastically changed for the worse with the new additional staff that was brought in. I was unknowingly assigned to Dr Pulcheri. She seemed professional at first but had many issues from prescriptions not being filled correctly when requested, to months of unavailability to see me and falsifying medical records from teladoc calls. I tried my best to accommodate her derelict of job duties but to no success. I even tried to get the new receptionist Natalie, who was hired after Wilson, to help facilitate my health needs. At first it seemed like she could handle the fast paced and demanding position of answering phones. but that was short lived. She quickly became unprofessional and contentious on the phone. She would over talk me, cut me off in mid speech and wouldn't relay my messages to Dr Pulcheri. This went on for the past year. I had to ultimately make the hard decision to leave the East Medical Practice. No ill will towards Dr Lusky or others at the practice not mentioned in my review. I just can't continue arguing with an unsuited receptionist and a doctor who seems more concerned about her travel plans and personal obligations ( as she would tell me when I visited ) than of her patients, leaving them with no medical care or alternative support.

There's been a great deal of turnover at the practice in the past two years -- which makes me worry about the health of our valued caregivers. But whatever internal shifts and struggles are bubbling underneath the surface, Dr. Taylor has been a constant, calm, and steady presence through it all. She is someone both of our children trust very much. It's hard to find a doctor in NYC who can offer this kind of personalized, capable care despite what I'm sure are crushing billing pressures. We've seen a few different doctors (sometimes we aren't able to see his PCP) and everyone is very knowledge, cordial and kind. The nurses are all great and attempt to calm my son down who get a a bit nervous as he's only 2.5 (he started seeing his doctor at 18 months when we moved to NYC). At times during afternoon visits when they're busier the wait time can be a little long but that's fine. We are patient and things work out.

It can be overwhelming so it was nice to know a doctor that was so close by would be willing to prescribe me the antibiotic I needed without question. I also want to note that my other family members have also seen him for years but have recently stopped due to them feeling his lack of support for when they fell ill. I have great insurance which is an absolute blessing and I wouldn't know what to do without it. I have to pay a co pay of $5 and the receptionist would do nothing but argue on the phone with me about how it's $15. They tried to come up with a way to "scam" the system basically he put him self under as a "specialist" meaning my insurance did require a $15 co pay however what he was doing was no where near special. It doesn't end there though. At 7 AM I send an email to the office in desperation for an appointment when I called hours later at 9:30 the rude receptionist told me that my insurance has expired and no I cannot bring it in I would have to send it because they need to know in advance what to charge me. How fucking ridiculous is that. She kept speaking over me until I literally had to tell her "okay I am speaking now" I asked her multiple times why they wait for me to be sick and desperate for medical attention to tell me this information and if she received my email ( which at the beginning of the call she said she did see it AT 7AM!!) why didn't she or anyone reach out to me so I could get them what they needed to have my appointment. So instead of answering my call for care and my email she continued to argue with me and once I was finished ( obviously upset, not at her but from constantly being put through the ringer) her only response was "are you finished" I never encountered such a lack of sympathy. I'm not asking to be treated as a fragile king but If I have to beg for empathy from my health care provider I think it's time to throw in the towel with said provider. Merkler is good for small kids but once you hit a certain age ( even if that age is still within the parameters of pediatrician care ) he kinda tosses you to the side. I don't know if it's so much him or these receptionists he keeps hiring but enough said I'd rather take my business elsewhere maybe to an urgent care hopefully they have more empathy then a private doctor.

After St. Vincent's closed I chose him as Khai's pediatrician and we followed him to his private practice. He's so knowledgeable, respectful and whenever we have any concerns he's a doctor that replies back ALL the time! He can even get my now 13 year old to take his flu shots/ immunizations. As a pediatrician, he gets the job done and more. He goes above and beyond! Best doc!
