Located in the heart of downtown Charleston close to the Old Provost Dungeon and Powder Magazine named this is one of the many public parks that highlights downtown. As you enter through the gates there's a Statue of George Washington and a Marker that marks the site of the Centennial Fort Sumter Time Capsule. In the center of the park is an obelisk-shaped memorial to the Washington Light Infantry, a military and social organization located in Charleston. One of the oldest militia groups still active in the United States, it was founded in 1807. Made of Carolina gray granite, the 42-foot high memorial, a smaller model of the Washington Monument in Washington DC, which was unveiled in 1891 and is inscribed with the names of important military battles. Along the east wall of the park is a monument to Confederate General Pierre Beauregard, who was in charge of the city's defenses during the Civil War in 1862-1864 It's an absolutely beautiful park with so much history. We stopped at a bench and enjoyed the park for about 20 minutes before heading down to Rainbow Row which is a social media site for colorful fun photos. Note- There is a farmers market held walks away from here. It's located in Marion Square (see my review). It's every Saturday from 8AM-2PM & and tons of high end retails stores to browse ALL the way down King St. read more

Washington Park, sometimes called Washington Square, is a green oasis of great, moss-draped oak trees. The park borders a full block of Meeting Street, in between the intersections of Meeting Street and Broad Street, and Meeting Street and Chalmers Street. Chalmers is a cobblestone road. Park is dedicated in honor of George Washington, who visited the city in 1791, and in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of General Cornwallis' surrender to General Washington at Yorktown. Facing the Meeting Street entrance, the statue of George Washington, for whom the park was named, is the most recent addition to the statues and memorials in the park The obelisk at the center of the park is the Washington Light Infantry monument and is dedicated to the soldiers of the Washington Light Infantry who fought in the Civil War. read more

This is a lovely park in the historic district of Charleston. I enjoyed how areas of this small park were shaded with benches as it was a toasty fall day. The landscaping here was well kept, and there were lovely monuments with interesting information to read. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to get to this park, however, if you're nearby, it's definitely worth a stop. read more

Washington Square is a small, old, historic park in downtown Charleston. We stumbled upon it while walking around in the area. It has two entrances from two different streets, it's lush, with many statutes and stories, benches to sit and have a snack or read a book. It wasn't very peaceful when we stopped by, several guides were bringing groups of tourists around. Otherwise, this would be an ideal place to escape the noise and take a break and relax. We were walking in the downtown historical district of Charleston and came upon Washington Square. We proceeded to check out the small park with large shade trees and monuments. After visiting, we researched this park a little more. The park has been known by several names throughout in it's history. It was at one time the homesite of Corbett's Thatched Tavern. The square originally opened in 1818. The park was known as City Hall Park until October 19, 1881 (the centennial of the Yorktown surrender), when it was renamed in honor of George Washington. In the center of the park is a memorial to the Washington Light Infantry. The memorial is made of Carolina gray granite and is a miniature version of the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. The memorial is about forty-two feet high and is inscribed with the names of important military battles and the names of the unit's dead from the War Between the States. It was unveiled on February 23, 1891. This was a really cool stop to see some of the history of Charleston and get out of the direct sunlight under the shade of the large trees. Washington square is a hidden gem nestled in the hustle and bustle of the "business sector" of charleston. It is quite literally hidden since it's surrounded by buildings, and hard to notice unless you're looking for it. One advantage to that is it's almost always calm and peaceful, and it's a great place to eat a takeout lunch, let your kids run around, or sit with your dog. It's also perfectly situated among other green spaces in downtown to provide some open grassy space amongst the tightly packed buildings of the lower peninsula. read more

It seems an area the size of one house in an otherwise resplendent residential neighborhood has been left vacant. Why there's a monument to Washington here isn't entirely clear to me, but it's a pretty spot. There's no amenities, it's just a monument with a few benches, and gated entry from several sides. read more

Washington Square is a lovely area downtown to walk through, sit in, or have the kids sit and play for a while. There are benches to rest at and plenty of dirt and steps to keep the littles occupied. Most days, there is a food stand right outside the gate. read more

Washington Square is a quaint park with some Charleston history. I always love walking through here any time of the year. The shade trees offer a wonderful canopy from the summer sun, and hinder the breezy winds in the winter. Either way, you can enter from 3 streets to walk, sit and enjoy Charleston charm. Best time of year to visit is the spring to see blooming color. There are several monuments in and around, with the center piece being the Washington Monument replica. History buffs will enjoy the info, and nature lovers will enjoy the peace & quiet. What a gem in the heart of the French Quarter on Broad, Chalmers & Meeting Streets. A very small park but feeds all the senses and packs all the right punches. It is obviously a meeting spot for many. I saw several walking tours here today, managing to ear wig some of the historical information they were dissipating to the eager visitors. I sat and watched the people, listened to the birds, watched the Spanish Moss sway from the giant shady oaks. I felt like I was back in time or on the set of a Southern based movie. Today was a beautiful day and perfect to spend some time in this historic peaceful spot. If you need to take time out from the hustle & bustle of daily life, or nurse a coffee. This is your spot. So next time you are ambling up the street, stop and take it all in, even if it's just for a few minutes. It's worth it. read more

When you run approximately one marathon a month, the next day you might get out of bed feeling like you don't want to walk, but your body loosens up quicker. So what did we do after running the 39th Annual Kiawah Island Marathon? We walked all around Charleston until we stumbled across this historic park! We weren't the only ones here. A squad of urban adventurers composed of a Dad and 5 teens were trying to crack a course record, as they discovers clues around the commemorative obelisk at the parks' center which those who perished during the Civil War. We enjoyed sitting here briefly and taking in the history amongst the old oak trees that provide a reprieve from the sun in a mellow shade. read more

Washington Square park is one of my favorite parks in Charleston. It is well maintained with plenty of big trees and shade to keep you cool on a warm day. This park is next to the courthouses and post office so I regularly find myself there when I am in need of a place to sit down and relax on a busy day. The park is equipped with wifi so it is also a good place to get some work done too. Occasionally the park can also be used as an event space and it always works well at all of the events I have attended there. read more

Tucked away at the end of a busy block you find this little gem. The mesmerizing trees are very stunning, Gigantic, and filled with hanging Spanish moss, a treat to see if you are not from SC. It seemed a little spooky at first, I kept thinking any minute now the headless horseman is coming after me. The longer I sat there the quieter the park got. The tall trees gave off a very nice breeze and provided much needed shade. I really enjoyed my quiet hour here. read more

There is nothing better on a warm (or cool) sunny day in Charleston, then to sit on a bench in one of the parks and read a book, people watch, or reflect on current events. Washington square offers so much of everything. A regular meeting point for walking tours, friends who want to catch up, or a place to sit and eat your lunch (just be sure to recycle). There is history in and around every wall in Washington Square, all you have to do is take a moment to open your senses, take it all in, and reflect on how this small square came to be. Be sure to stay off the grass though, because as beautiful as it is, it is also fragile and there is a lot of new growth as they try to make it green again. I always stumble upon Washington Square while out on my adventures, and each time I come upon it from a different angle, I'm welcomed in by it's monuments, oak trees, and park benches. Washington Park is a quaint little oasis right in the heart of the historic area. Nice and shady, with plenty of benches and very nice flowers (for most of the year, anyway), it's a favorite lunch break spot for folks that work nearby. There are several cool monuments in the park as well, honoring PGT Beauregard among others. Worth checking out. read more

1. Location--it is on the corner of Broad and Meeting street. Also, it is near the big white church that George Washington prayed at when he visited Charleston. 2. Peacefulness--This is a nice area to take a quick break from walking and read a book. There are visitors that come in and out, but usually you wouldn't even notice them if you are reading or looking at your iPhone (I came on a late Sunday afternoon and there was light foot traffic--of course this would vary daily). 3. Overall--this place is beautiful. You almost feel as if you were in the 1800's while you are sitting here. It is a small square park which is surrounded by trees and lots of green. In the center there is an obelisk and in front of it there is a statue of George Washington. From what I remember reading on the plaque on the statue, General Westmoreland (United States Army four-star general, who commanded U.S. military operations in the Vietnam War at its peak) helped create a committee to fund the creation of this statue. read more

Typically swarming with tourists, Washington Park is at least 5 degrees cooler than Broad Street. You can thank the historic buildings that enclose the park, as well as the abundant live oaks. read more

Yep, I'm rating a city park. Scraping the bottom of the barrel? Nah. This park is awesome. It has a statute of George Washington. And a bunch of trees. And it's really quiet. And it's quite a bit cooler here in the warm autumn sun than other places in town. What this park lacks in size, it makes up for in splendor. Between the beautiful old buildings, the old growth trees, and the pleasing layout, it makes for a great place to rest and relax while exploring the city. read more
