I can honestly say that this was probably my favorite part of my stay at Folly Beach area of SC. This area offered so much more to look at and explore. It was also where I picked up most of my shells and a bit of sand that I ended up taking home. It was comprised of the lighthouse view/area as well as the other connecting part of the shore where all of the stilt houses and condos are located right on the beach. Much farther beyond that was the pier and eventually the designated county park area. I really wish I could've afforded to stay at one of the places near the lighthouse, because that would've been perfection. I can't imagine the pounding and storm surge they endure during a severe storm or or hurricane, but they seem absolutely seem sublime during any other time. I stayed at a condo up the road that was only a very short distance (4 minute drive at the most) from the pier/beach/lighthouse. During the last few days I was visiting I was able to get up super early in the morning and catch the sunrise. It was beyond beautiful and deeply moving. I just can't remember seeing a sunrise like that for a very long time. It was an unobstructed and unencumbered view. The only thing that separated me from the sunrise was the distant horizon of the sea. How blessed and lucky are the people that live near that area. To be able to take advantage of that glorious part of nature is truly a slice of heaven on this earth. The lighthouse area was really cool because it had a lot of deadwood structures sticking out of the sand on the beach. The lighthouse from what I understand is inoperable. That's a shame. It sits way out into the water at quite a distance, but it sure is still cool to view. The only thing that was curious and a little bit disappointing was all of the graffiti that was plastered all over the cement walkway road that led to the lighthouse. With that said, a bigger eyesore was seeing more graffiti on the beautiful line of rocks on the beach. Many of those had spray paint on them too. There was also a cement foundation ruin that was strewn with graffiti. I'm not sure what it's purpose was previously. I attempted to concentrate on the rest of the beauty, and just tried to ignore that unfortunate part. Overall I found the area by the lighthouse extremely peaceful and meditative.

It was quieter & spacious when I grew up on Folly. Ruined now with traffic, buildings crowded together and noise. Too sad...

There are beautiful forever changing sand bars all around the lighthouse that are wonderful for a little kayak picnic.

I'll add that I wanted to rent chair and umbrella. I did learn you have to do that prior to going down to the beach because they are not able to read cards. We didn't get anything from the snack bar so not sure what they have or prices. Plenty of parking it seems at least at the time I went and it was $15 and I was told I could come and go with my receipt. There is a ramp for handicap accessibility . It was a very nice day trip.

As the Maid of Honor, I was in charge of plans for the weekend and I wanted to start the trip with my own version of a bike tour around Folly. I called 2 days prior to our arrival because I didn't initially think we needed a formal reservation, but started to get nervous as we got closer to the trip. When I called, the guys told me it would be no problem and they would have 10 bikes ready for us at 11:00am that Friday. I wasn't sure what would happen when we arrived, so I held my breath and crossed my fingers all would work out. I was ecstatic when we arrived to see Will and Cameron already at the door waiting on us!! We were maybe 5 minutes or so after 11:00 (10 girls can be a lot to get out the door) but they both commented on us "being on time," so I felt much better. They got us setup and on our way very quickly. I even asked for some of their "expert opinions" on restaurant/bars we should stop throughout the day and they provided us with great recommendations. I think having the bikes on a Friday was perfect because we didn't run into too much traffic and it felt very safe everywhere we went. We were really sad to return the bikes at the end of the day. I thought we would only spend a few hours on them since Folly isn't that big, but we were having so much fun we stayed on them until the shop was closing. By the end of the weekend, I asked the girls what their favorite part of the trip was and the most common response was the bikes!! If I had to do it over, I would probably pay to rent bikes for the full weekend. It was the best way to get 10 girls around Folly Beach!

Each side of the Inlet has it's own personality. On the Sullivan's Island side there is a parking lot with a few historical markers telling visitors the story that Breach Inlet played in the American Revolution; in 1776 that the British could not ford the inlet and take Sullivan's Island on foot, many drowning trying to cross the inlet from what is now IOP to Sullivan's Island. On the IOP side there is a footpath through the brush to get to the inlet and from there you can head left to get the beach at Isle of Palm. Both sides have small parking lots and small beaches that you can fish off of. Swimming the Inlet is illegal, because it is so dangerous and I've witness currents take skiers flying off; only to be saved by life jackets they were wearing. Many people have drowned in this water. But it is a great place to come fish, wade (not swim) in the water, or just hang out on a nice day.
