Store is very well stocked, especially with new albums. Of nearly 10 stores in the Austin area I visited this trip they had the most new stock and variety of new stock. Prices on the new stock were generally reasonable. They had one of the two titles I was hoping to find, and it was priced all right. I picked up a couple of markdowns that were good deals too. There are some used albums, but what I saw wasn't really priced to move. Somebody who wants that particular title would pay that price, but not a browser with broad interests. I could have bought a few used titles but passed. Overall I'd say you have to stop here though if you're visiting from out of town, you're bound to find something, they've got so much. read more

My little bro & I loved it here. We couldn't have had a better time. There are plenty of CDs & LPs to go through. The layout is like 2 buildings joined into 1. The first half if you will, is CDs, DVDs, nick nacks, some shirts, & other things while the other half is all vinyl plus more shirts, other vinyl related media, posters & such. We only had about an hour to try to take it all in, but we still came away with some real jewels. It reminds me of what I love most about music shops. No matter how much of my life I spend immersed in music, these great shops still have things I've never seen before. Like these 2 Stray Cat albums - I thought I knew my stuff until I ran into this pair I'd never seen before! I had to be sure to pick a couple of good shirts too. They had numerous I'd never seen before including a fantastic Blondie one I chose. Plus, their own merch is really something - they have their own shirts in quite the variety, mugs, socks though they had just sold out, & more. Got to respect the work toward the brand! I loved it enough that I made an account online so I can stay linked & bought myself another shirt from there since it looks like I picked up one of mine in the wrong size by mistake. This is the go-to vinyl shop in Austin. Lots of records that are both used and new. I had mixed experiences with the staff. Some are helpful and others ignored me completely even though I directly made eye contact and asked a question. Oh well - not everyone was born with manners. I did find a lot of cool albums that I had on my want list; so ultimately I left happy. I also found an awesome travel record bag for future use! I did note that parking is terrible here being that it is close to downtown. If you end up parking in the street be mindful that you have limited time. Pricing was high in that it reflects the higher range on the used items compared to different online sites and local area locations. read more

Ok so there are cities you visit with places you must go to and if you don't it's a true loss. Being able to shop here after knowing about it for decades was a dream come true! Huge store with a great selection of vinyl! Of all the things to make you feel nostalgic they still have a small selection of cassette tapes and yes even the trusty old compact disc. Stepping in here is like going back in time to the golden days when you would get paid on Friday and run down to the record store to spend that paycheck! I got here during covid 19 (October 10th 2020) and watched myself, a friend, a party of one and a party of two come to the door just to find that there is a "book an appointment" option for shopping. I watched 5 people turn away business for you because you won't let people inside your store without an appointment. There's literally a DINER next door attached to this building. 6 feet apart. Masks. Social distancing. Limit the amount of people in store at a time. -it's not a hard concept. You just missed out on lots of business. Be better. Taking this covid nonsense way too far. This was the largest of the record stores I checked out in Austin. It's huge! Half the store in vinyl and the other half is cds. Huge selection on both sides. Both sides are peppered with cool music related gift type items. Maybe the largest Funko Pop's selection I've ever seen. Most I had never seen before. The vinyl was a mix of new and used. It all seemed to be in great shape. Very large metal section. I didn't buy any records here but saw lots of cool stuff. read more

Really appreciate the helpful staff and safe measures the store has been taking to slowly open back up. As someone who has regularly spent time in this store and is also extremely immunocompromised, it means a lot to me that Waterloo takes its staff and customers into account. Although it's been strange for indie businesses since they are having to learn how navigate uncharted territory (A.K.A. a pandemic), it seems like Waterloo is doing its very best and then some to make sure everyone stays safe. Vinyl lovers rejoice. CD lovers too. Truthfully, you can find all your music, movie and loads of other media merchandise here so feel free to rejoice, whatever your reason for stopping in. With a helpful staff, and lots to browse you could seriously lose some time when while visiting, but since the place is so well organized, if there's something in particular you need, you will be able to pop in and out without hassle. For those looking to browse (my kinda people), you'll have lots of browsing to do. They have music, movies, electronics, turntables, etc. as well as smaller gift items (mugs, keychains, Vinyl Pop figures), trust me, there's lots to see. If you're like me, you'll lose most of your time in the music. There are two large rooms, one with a lot of vinyl, the other has rows and rows of CDs. For regulars of the store there's a large recent addition CD section for things that are coming in daily. NICE!! I'm glad to see a store still buying daily as it leads to an awesomized selection...something this place has in spades. I've heard that time spent looking for treasure will be time well spent, so feel free to treasure hunt. Browsing an excellent selection like this will take time and repeated visits. Well it saddens me to write this review considering I really like to root for the local peps but this is super necessary as I am in hopes management will read this and adjust their ways accordingly. The had a CD/book release show with signing with Lucinda Williams recently and it was so poorly managed. First, they advertised (even on the radio) as a free show. Well only if you were able to get in after the people who purchased tickets to get in. Since they advertised it as free hundreds of people showed up to get in super early. Me included. Let me paint this picture for you. It's 100 degrees outside with a heat index of 110. It's Austin, TX in July go figure this shouldn't be rocket since to them. There is no shade nor breeze. They said the show was to start at 5 and doors open at 4:45. The doors opened at 5:15 for the people with bands. Then they got to sit inside with the A/C while the non-band holders had to wait outside an additional half hour so the banded people could hear her play a song. WHAT!?!?! Then they allowed the non-banded people in finally. I was about to faint and saw a woman with a drink and I asked where she got it. She said they are giving them for free by the front door. WHAT?!?!?! So the banded people are graced as they walked in with a drink to help cool them off but the non-banded people were not. I had to push my way through so many people that were pissed off of course as we were in the middle of Q and A with Lucinda at this time. Well it had to be done as I was about to pass out from dehydration and heat exhaustion. So if you were one of those people my apologies. So you ask why didn't I bring my own water? Well the answer was I did but it wasn't a large bottle as I had assumed they wouldn't let me bring anything in. They should have known advertising free (WHICH IT WASN'T) would draw out a lot of people. They would come early its TX in July maybe we should be prepared for this and offer more than one drink station (which was a tequila company not really water that just luckily for me had sparkling water). Maybe while all the people that were waiting in line we could offer them something like water!! Why was this not thought of. The only reason why I gave 2 stars and not 1 is because at least they had someone as cool as Lucinda Williams come and perform. read more

A real record store Love visiting record shops around the country and local. With Austin being such an incredible music city, my hopes were high. I was NOT disappointed. Not only did they have an incredible selection, but the employees had a lot of personality, and made great recommendations. They had great music playing on the system, and even a selection of affordable turntable set ups for those looking to get started. Ended up with Wildflower by The Avalanches and LOVE it. I love this store. However, it is dangerous to go in with credit cards or a lot of cash. In additional to having a ton of things you would love to have, they also have local EP and CD release events. Does that person next to you look familiar? Some of the biggest names in music come here. I stick to LPs in this store. Why? To try and keep from spending my way to the Poor House. I actually came to Yelp and created an account because I happened to be standing in line when I saw this interaction take place, and I expected (by the behavior exhibited) that you would come here and leave a bad review. It comes as no surprise to find out that you did just that. First of all, I can't stand Yelp reviews because they are always taken out of context and I came here to explain what really happened. Waterloo has taken many precautions to make in-store shopping safe for it's customers during the pandemic and while the staff member working the door was explaining the procedures to the many people outside in line, you took it upon yourself to act childish and immature simply because you didn't want to abide by those policies. You then became defensive and escalated the situation. Every other person in line had no problem with the procedure and had a pleasurable experience in the store. It's also no surprise that you are a serial "negative reviewer." Maybe if you decided to act like a grown-up, you could save yourself significant time and effort coming to Yelp and airing your grievances. Cheers to you, Waterloo Records! I visited here about a year ago on my trip to Austin with the family, as I make it a point to head to a local record store wherever I travel. Being from the Chicagoland area, there's no shortage of great record stores... and I've got to say, Waterloo is up there with some of my all-time favorite shops. I usually have to drag the family in, but everyone found something enjoyable to pass the time I spent flipping through the bins. Knick-knacks, DVDs, CDs, and vinyl. What more could you want? I found the prices to be fair, or at least in line with other independent retailers. The selection is HUGE. I was able to pick up a few albums that I hadn't seen anywhere near me, and I never thought I'd see such obscure (new) records in one spot. Fantastic soundtrack selection, too. Most of the "new" items are pricey, but "used" options are pretty affordable. I WAS 10 FT FROM WOLFMOTHER!!!! WOOOOOOOOO!!!! Well it was acoustic, but Stockdale was still hitting the high notes! What with holiday central coming up, I failed to spring for a ticket to their Stubbs show Friday nite, but got to see them, briefly for free Friday evening. And got them to autograph the new CD for my best girlfriend who turned me on to them years ago. Easy, personal, fantastic Christmas gift! All the usual suspects were represented: the homeless guys subtley pretending to browse an hour early before the free keg gets set up, the Dazed and Confused long-haired, bloodshot-eyed teenagers, every black metal concert tee imaginable, and the guys wearing kerchiefs on their necks (what, is the Bolshevick look coming back??). Oh, and this was a new twist: the hipster dudes who just brought a 12-pack of Lone Star cans from Whole Foods and were drinking em outta the box. Didn't even know you could do that! In a day when record stores are going out of business it's pretty exciting to see a shop like this that is thriving. Hands down one of the best record stores I've been too, and I've seen my fair share in my day. I was too nervous about buying any vinyl and taking it home with me since I was on a shoebox of a flight but I had a blast scouring the shelves and finding some real cool looking stuff (e.g., a 2 album recording of an R.E.M. radio performance from the 80s on vinyl). In addition to records (new and used) they also have an incredibly thorough selection of CDs, a nicely curated selection of DVDs, and some fun gifty type things (light hearted office supplies, action figures, etc) so it's easy to pop in and buy something for yourself or someone else if you're looking for a fun gift, music lover or no. Prices are reasonable, staff is knowledgable, hours are late. Yes. I can get behind this place. For sure! read more
