Fast forward six months to the day of that appointment--after receiving multiple text messages confirming it--and I was suddenly told the dentist wouldn't be in and that I needed to reschedule. Around the time of my original appointment, I then received a call asking if I was at the office. I explained that no, I wasn't, because their office had to rescheduled me for the following week. After putting me on hold for several minutes, I was then told the next available appointment was October 2nd. At that point, the amount of confusion was enough for me to decide to take my business elsewhere. What really sealed the deal was when the receptionist responded, "Well, you already paid for crowns, so why would you cancel?" Excuse me? I haven't paid for crowns, nor do I need crowns. She then corrected herself and said it was "just a joke." This is a dental office, not a comedy club, and joking with patients about procedures they supposedly paid for is incredibly inappropriate. As the daughter of an orthodontist, I'm honestly flabbergasted by the lack of professionalism, organization, and communication I experienced with this office. She is an IAOMT general member, which I believe means she has some education about mercury toxicity and practices safe removal of mercury amalgam fillings. She also accepts my insurance, a huge plus. (If you need amalgam removal and you don't have insurance, check out Delta Dental of Colorado. They cover it!) I opted for the Clifford Dental Materials Compatibility blood test to make sure I woudn't have a bad reaction to the new fillings. At $300 it is pricey, but not as pricey as having to repeat the work. A separate breathing source is a good idea during amalgam removal. Dr. Engler has an oxygen tank with the tubes and thingie that goes over your nose. I opted to add in nitrous oxide. Just enough oblivion to take the edge off. Other protections are a rubber dam to isolate the tooth and catch amalgam particles, a big loud vacuum to suck away the toxic vapor, sunglasses, and hearing protection earmuff things like the ones jackhammer operators wear. My clothing was covered head to ankle - not quite toe - in cozy blankets. I brought in my phone in airplane mode and played binaural beats on my headset under the jackhammer-muffs to keep my mind calm. Dr. Engler and her staff were understanding when I told them I might cry because of traumatic dental experiences as a child. (PTSD and other anxiety disorders are common with mercury toxicity.) They were also extremely kind to me when, on my second amalgam removal visit, I was so sick I couldn't think straight and could barely stumble into the dentist chair. Since then, my new composite fillings are settling in fine, my health is much improved, and I have Dr. E to thank for starting me on this journey back to regaining my health and my life. A side note that some may find useful, funny, or cool: Dr. Engler makes no secret of her faith. There are lots of inspirational Bible wall hangings, religious music, pamphlets and such around the office. It is probably because I am a non-Christian from Texas that initially I wondered if this was going to be the right dentist for me. I have had unpleasant experiences with other health practitioners who were that overtly Christian. However, when I met Dr. Engler I was impressed. She understood how sick I was and answered all my questions. Nobody crossed the professional line or pushed it any further than a friendly "God bless". Christ was inclusive, real Christians are inclusive, and Dr. Engler is the real deal. She made a good impression, unlike those pushy Christians in college who were so hot to "save" me. Respect!

They don't take dental insurance, but their prices are very low. With our dental insurance option, it's cheaper to just decline dental insurance and pay Dr. Engler out of pocket.

Rocky Mountain Dental Group was referred to me by my coworker whose husband has been going there for years, and she spoke very highly of them - I am glad I took her word! Due to the first unfortunate incident, I hadn't had my teeth cleaned in about a year - though all my life I've been diligent about visiting the dentist every 6 months - so when I went to my last dentist I was hoping to remedy the situation and get back on track. However, the hygienist supposedly diagnosed me with early periodontal disease and claimed I would need a series of "deep cleanings," which I found out would not be covered by insurance, and would cost me about $1200 over a years worth of cleanings. I never had any issues with my teeth, and neither the dentist or hygienist explained to me what my symptoms were or made any attempt to help me understand what they saw that led them to this conclusion. I was already skeptical after leaving so decided to call back and schedule a regular cleaning (since I didn't even get one while I was there) and they informed me I would be explained the dangers of refusing their deep cleaning treatments and have to sign a waiver of all responsibility if I didn't go through with it. Well needless to say that really made me question their motives, so I searched for a second opinion. Immediately when I called Rocky Mountain Dental Group they made me feel comfortable. The woman I spoke to was incredibly friendly and helpful, and even got my x-rays from the previous dentist with ease. I was able to get an appointment within a week of when I called. My hygienist, Dave, was wonderful - he almost immediately dismissed the idea that I had periodontal disease and explained to me exactly how to determine the symptoms of the disease via my x-rays. He conducted a thorough exam of my mouth and explained to me every step of the way what he was doing and why. He said his job is to educate his patients and I really appreciated that. I now feel like I can avoid being taken advantage of again with claims of periodontal disease. The doctor also examined my teeth and assured me that I had no issues to be concerned about other than some minor gingivitis. They didn't push any unnecessary procedures, made sure I was comfortable the entire time, and went above and beyond in answering all my questions and concerns. I highly recommend Rocky Mountain Dental Group and am so relieved I finally found an honest, smart, and responsible dental practice.
