We were welcome by Donna (staff) and there's nothing welcoming about it. She hurriedly talks about the hotel info but it's more of a mundane task for her instead of being an enjoyable part of her job. Downsides: Accommodation -We were placed in a room that is dated, dingy and smells moldy/musty. -Floors have several stains in them (see pic) and the carpeted floors were uneven and makes squeaking/creaking noises when you walk on it. -We were informed that we have a waterfront view which is partly true. When you're in the lower level rooms, your view will be obstructed by trees /shrubs so it is very unlikely you will see a full view of the Bras d'Or Lake. -Outlet plugs were limited and situated in very hard to reach places. If you didn't bring a power bank, your electronic devices will be nowhere close to you. -Washroom is very small and taking a shower is very unpleasant since it's slower to drain and basically you're standing in water. Dining -Place is very remote, not a lot of places to dine and no shops close by. It will take you more than 20 mins to walk to the nearest restaurant and 5 to 10 mins by car. -That left you with no choice but to dine in their restaurant called McCurdy Dining Room that has limited choice of menus. Food is mediocre and very expensive for a rural place. Seafood chowder is watered down, not a lot of seafood in it and a little bit spicy. Their Seafood Pasta is bland and has more noodles than sauce/seafood. Same goes with their Chicken Parmesan Pasta. You also have to wait for a long time for your food as they're understaff and trying to accommodate more customers that they can handle. -Breakfast was included when we booked our room. It's a buffet style and you get the basic breakfast of eggs, sausage, toast, etc. Upside: Nothing good about this hotel and wouldn't even recommend this to my worst enemy!

We were lucky enough to stay at the Silver Dart Lodge in Cape Breton. What a wonderful location. Overlooking the the lake, and each room has a small patio and chairs to sit and enjoy the views. The folks at this lodge were so friendly and helpful as well. East coast friendliness is definitely evident here! :) Beds were comfy and rooms were well appointed. Separate sink area from the shower/toilet room. Ample closet space. 2 comfy chairs to watch a flat panel tv and free wifi. This hotel also has a great dining room and is not far from downtown Baddeck and other attractions like the Alexander Graham Bell museum.

How could this be a four star with the following issues: 1) Outside entrances (Huntly Building), 2) cheap vinyl siding, 3) toilets that move when you sit on them, 4) very soft (squishy) tubs. Positives: Room was clean. Hot water was plentiful. Grounds were well manicured. We were told only two people per room and thus had to get two rooms for family of 4 with young (children) only to then discover that both rooms were suites with pull out sofas that were perfect for young children. What a rip off. This place caters to tour buses and athletic teams. Have stayed at other luxury inns and resorts on this trip that were far nicer and much less expensive. Bottomline: For a 2-3 star, paying $150-$175 per night, it would be fine. Otherwise, stay away.

Our kids did not sleep and the next day of our trip was ruined. The property looks neglected. Pool ceiling peeling and falling. Walls yellowing. Metal rusting. Gym with a decaying mirror and an ice machine sitting open. Windows fogged and taped instead of repaired. Breakfast was picked clean more than an hour before closing on two mornings and only restocked after we asked. Staff dismissive. Property falling apart. Hard no.

A Warm Welcome to Baddeck - We'll Be Back!…read more After six mornings of B&B/hotel breakfasts on our Nova Scotia stay, we were happy to choose a self-catering option in Baddeck, giving us the flexibility to eat on our own schedule and grab a bite to eat in the town. Willie's The Worn Doorstep was just what we wanted, and then more. Our suite was more of an apartment with the choice of two queen beds, a fairly large living room area with a kitchenette and verandah. Our room faced away from the street, and it was quiet with no traffic noise.The suite was clean, bright, nicely furnished, with comfortable beds, and a short stroll into town, making it an easy recommendation for others. We also sat upstairs on the roof deck, to enjoy the July weather and the views. But what made The Worn Doorstep an extra special stay for us was the kindness and hospitality of Willie and Gina. We were given a warm Scottish welcome (genuine - Willie is a Glaswegian, transplanted to Canada many years ago). Willie was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about Baddeck, gave lots of advice when we asked for local information, and shared many entertaining and interesting stories. Will return for more!

They have pictures of the original owners. The house built more than 130 years ago!! We also told the host that we were vegetarian no eggs and a vegan. The host still made amazing breakfast for us. My family stayed in a unit in the house so I can only speak for it, but it was so adorable! The floors were a little creaky and I don't think soundproofing was fantastic, but the furnishings were old-school and very cute. The slanted ceiling, old wooden wardrobe, pictures and quilts, lacy curtains, and the washroom (with a shower and a separate old-style bathtub) had an adorable antique vibe. The size of the room was standard, but the washroom was quite roomy. I personally loved it! I believe it was a heritage house. It also had an amazing view of the harbour. Unfortunately we got in late and it faced west so we couldn't see sunrise, but I imagine sunset would've been spectacular! We also had breakfast there. If you're looking for fast grab-and-go this probably isn't the place (although I'm sure you can make arrangements), since there was just a couple as staff. However, the service was great and they were super attentive. The food was home-style and made on the spot to order, and coffee is freshly ground coffee beans pressed. It was a relaxing meal overlooking the beautiful view of the water. Would recommend a stay here :)
