I got a Groupon for a horse back ride for 4 for my wife's birthday. It sounded like fun. And this place far exceeded my expectations. I fell in love with this place and we definitely will be going back. Our trail leads were awesome. Our horses (and my mule) were great. And the views of the mountains were beautiful. Be warned. I'm not one to write reviews too often but when I do.. I'm all in. And this place deserves 5 stars out of me. Had such a great time riding horses here with my other half. They introduced us to all the horses plus other animals on the farm and The sunset ride was incredibly breathtaking. The volunteers were sooo awesome and helpful and so with that I would very much recommend everyone try this place out. It's worth the drive I promise and make sure to have full charge on your phones cause I guarantee you'll take tons of pics as we did. This is a small ranch in the middle of the desert run by volunteers with rescue horses - love the concept! From booking through the ride itself the people are incredibly friendly and the horses well mannered. The location is down a dirt road, in a somewhat residential neighborhood and in the middle of wide open space in the desert, surrounded my mountains in the distance (but not many cactus in the area). Our wrangler, CJ, was very friendly with the kids and shared a lot of history. It's a very flat ride that winds back and forth, great for beginners. We asked about trotting with the horses and respect the desire to protect the horses, but would have liked to do a bit more given we were lucky enough to have just the four of us. read more

The ride was about 90minuted long and then we were allowed to go into the arena to ride the horses freely. The trail was gorgeous, fairly easy terrain with some up and down. My wife and I took our 7 year old granddaughter for her first horseback ride. It was fantastic. Our wrangler Katie was super friendly and took extra special care of our granddaughter, even walking her horse through the thick mud in the washes following the previous evening's rain fall. Her husband Nathan came out on his day off to help, and was super nice as well. They both told us stories of all the rescued horses, the ranch, and Tucson as well. After our ride Katie took the extra time to show our granddaughter some horse tricks and walk us to the barn to see the new colt, born the day before our visit. It was on their recommendation we visited the Desert Museum the next day. They were correct, it was "5 Stars"! read more

We found this place on Groupon by chance. Come to find out there is a horse rescue on the property; so we did not know what to expect. We had two kids under 10 in our group that have no riding experience; the guides did a great job making sure their horses were calm and safe. The rest of us, most with minimal or no riding experience all had horses that were calm and easy to ride. The ride is dusty; you are in a desert after all so be prepared. Pre-ride we had the ability to interact with multiple horses which made the kids more calm. As we came back to the stable; the horses knew exactly where to go and waited for the guides. We had such an amazing time; we will drive back down from North Phoenix again with friends. read more

I made the venture out here because this place is based on an amazing premise. All the animals here are rescues, from the dogs who greet you upon arrival to the horses that take you on the trail ride. The weekend we went they were doing a special $25 for the trail ride and $10 for the wrangler for a 90 minute sunset trail ride. It was incredible! I plan to return the next time I am in town. I would suggest better signage (we were late because we drove past since there was no sign and he address was hard to read). This by far was my favorite horseback ride I have been on. My mother came into town from MO and had never been horseback riding before. So what better way to share this experience with her? Then to go on a sunset ride. -To start the Wranglers were amazing. They treated us like family and made us feel like home. They truly made the experience for all 4 of us amazing. -All the horses and dogs are all resume animals. To see someone take the time and money into saving those animals to give them a better life is awesome. You just don't see that any more -The ride was beautiful! The sunset that night was breath taking (what AZ is known for) I would highly recommend this Ranch to everyone looking for a amazing experience and view. Used a groupon ($69 for two people) a great deal!!! The only reason they get a four instead of five is because of the crazy 6 miles or so of dirt road to get there! The wrangler was great. Amazing! My fiance and I had a great ride through the desert and had the best tour guide! Larry showed us all the different types of cacti and plants, and critter tracks! We had 2 dogs follow us for the entire hour and a half! He even lent us cowboy hats for shade. I recommend bringing sunscreen if you burn easily. They gave us each 2 bottles of water, and treats to feed the horses. There's even a cute backpack on the horse for your cell phone. thank you for the wonderful time! I cannot say enough good things about our experience here! myself, my boyfriend, and 2 friends purchased a Groupon to use for our ride here as a post Christmas celebration together. When we arrived CJ (main guide) and Izzy (ranch hand and it was her first day and she was beyond mature and great with the group) immediately greeted us, helped us fill out our waivers, and invited us to say hello to the dogs, pigs, and horses on the ranch while they saddled up the horses we were going to ride. Cj gave us a crash course in horse riding before we got started and it was nice that she didn't talk down to us even though we were new riders. Once we were all saddled up she took the time to take individual and group pictures of us which she called "the most important part" haha. On our ride she shared stories of the horses, shared a little history about the ranch, and even showed us the hidden shapes in the surrounding mountain ranges. She was very personable, welcoming, and a great guide. After our ride we were welcome to feed the horses, pet the dogs, and take as many pictures as we wanted with the animals. I found this place on Groupon, and because I was booking for a date in the future I wanted to call to make sure they could accommodate our small group of three for the date we needed. The woman I spoke with on the phone was extremely helpful and very pleasant. She was happy to answer my questions. We had family visiting from out east who had never seen the desert and she loves horses, so we wanted her to see the best of the southwest. Way Out West Ranch lives up to their name, and was not disappointing! We had quite the cowboy adventure. On the afternoon of our ride we left Tucson and headed northwest. We wished almost immediately after turning off the highway that we had brought our Jeep instead of driving our small sedan. While the road to the ranch is drivable by car you will need to take it very slowly and be very careful. The road is pitted everywhere and doesn't seem to be graded often. It's a very long drive (30-40 min.) down this drive in a small car and the driver needs to be fully focused on the road. We had a sunset ride so on the way back it was pitch black and a bit more difficult to maneuver. Don't let this deter you though, the ride and experience is way worth it! When we arrived for our ride, we were greeted by some super sweet, old farm doggos, and a nice woman who was getting the horses ready for us. She told us we were waiting for a few more people from a different party. We were able to spend some really nice time getting to know some of the horses while our guide told us their back stories and told us some anecdotes about their personalities. We found out all their horses are rescues and that not all started as trail horses. Some of the horses are a little sassy, some are zippy, and some are lazy and need lots of coaxing to go out for a trail ride. We were laughing at the stories, and we picked out our horses. Our trail ride was absolutely amazing. The other group showed up a bit late so we got a little bit of a later start. The sun was setting just as we were heading out on the trail, but I was able to take the most stunning sunset photo I have ever taken. I had no idea how beautiful the Tortolitas are! The trail was mostly following a wash, and since the day was hot the evening was feeling nice and cool. We were lucky because it was also the night of a full moon, so even though it was dark we had plenty of light to see our surroundings. We saw an owl in a tree, and we even saw a rattlesnake in the wash! Our horses were tons of fun, the horse I chose was a little sassy and she kept wanting to trot. It was fun for me to be able to talk with her a learn a bit about horse personalities. I would definitely bring other visitors back to Way Out West Ranch for another ride. They were extremely affordable and tons of fun. read more

I can't really weigh in on the horseback riding experience because we never got that far. I purchased a Groupon Coupon with Way Out West Ranch for my grandson and myself to ride. I tried and tried to schedule this ride, I left message after message with no return calls. By the time they Finally contacted me, of course after the Groupon Coupon had expired. The Way Out West Ranch manager that I spoke with mentioned that the Ranch had been going through some transition yet, they had no interest in working with me to get the ride scheduled that I had already purchased for my grandson's birthday gift. So, what I have learned from this experience is I will never use Groupon to purchase a service again and fortunately for us we live in Arizona where there is a multitude of horseback riding stables to experience that adventure !! read more

The wrangler was super awesome & made us feel very comfortable... because her & both have NEVER even been on a horse so it was scary & nerve wracking at first. All in all, this was a pretty amazing experience. We made the 7:00 am reservation. You do have to wake up early, but seeing the Saguaros against the Tortolita Mountains was pretty breathtaking at that time of the morning. It was a fun drive as well. It was my first time riding, but it was easy enough learning how to get started. There was a group of four of us including the wrangler. You ride about 45 minutes out and back, which seemed to be just the right amount of time. There was a bit of excitement on the trail when the rescue dogs (who tag along on the trail ride) started barking at a momma cow with her calf. In general, the horses were calm and played follow the leader. I'm sure each horse had a moment or two of breaking into a very gentle trot, which made it even more fun. I highly recommend this experience to anyone living in the Tucson area who has never ridden a horse (like me). It's also a great experience to share with out of town guests. read more
