Perhaps I'm lending undue weight to this component of a bodega, but having grown up around bodegas as a boy in Queens, I am always impressed when a neighborhood establishment gives a nod to the exceptional, the uncommon and the aspirational beyond whatever malt liquor Billy Dee Williams used to hawk back in the day. The grocery items are varied and plentiful, the coffee is fresh and the prices aren't quite gouge-your-eyes-out expensive. Back to the beer: Hola Delicious Mini Market (which, by the way, is a hilarious and spirited name for a corner bodega in Bushwick) carries no less than four varieties of Lagunitas, the small craft brewer in Southern California. How cool is that? Yes, I understand that craft beers in bodegas are becoming more commonplace, especially with the gradual gentrification of the neighborhood that used to be known more for "Murder Avenue" (Myrtle Avenue's nickname in the 1980s) than for its culinary fare. But this one detail sent my head awhirl. I especially have a soft spot for Lagunitas ever since they sponsored a music/art event I hosted in my yet-unrenovated Bushwick house back in 2007, and will forever be a fan of their wonderful, delicious and innovative brews. Nope, not this place. I was interested in buying a ton of wine from here because I support local businesses and understand what the economic climate is causing undue hardships to everyone. However, when we walked in, we weren't greeted. We were treated like we were bothering them on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The person working seemed particular annoyed we walked in and now he has to put on his mask while we were in there. I wasn't dressed nicely or anything, I was on my way to a picnic at central park, so there could be some bias on how much I was willing to spend. After looking through the entire store for 5 minutes, we were never asked if we need help or anything. I mean, you would assume every person who walks in would need help, why? Because there's absolutely no organization or labeling, so trying to find particular wines would take all day. I finally asked if they have any Cab Sav, and I was replied with "of course we do. Over here. We have some $20 bottles over here, and some $15 bottles down there." Well, that definitely answers my first assumption about why we weren't being helped. We're not big spenders! You want me to buy these cheap bottles, then I will! Next I asked about Riesling, and then he showed me that. My friend and I both noticed how this guy was completely miserable and unhelpful. Seriously, you don't want to sell anything or make money at all? So be it. This review will make sure of that. I ended up buying 5 bottles of wine. I went in there with my gift card and was told that it was under new ownership but that the previous owner, Joe, still owned the wine store next door and would honor the gift card there. It was closed for the night. I finally got around to calling them to see if they would indeed honor the gift card and was told that although Joe is the same guy that issued the gift card and took my friends' money, they could not honor it because it was "a different corporation". I would like to give the owner, Joe, a chance to respond and make things right.

I got a mascato (i love sweet wines) an orange wine (dry and tart) and a yuzu sake (strong and citrusy). The staff was great and super friendly. I know nothing about wine so i got assistance in picking the orange wine. The staff member was happy to assist and make jokes. They were able to explain all the wines i had asked about. The place doesnt get crowded but people kept coming in and out. Once paying they provided us a wine bag specifically to add 6 bottle pockets. This place is great. I wish it wasnt so far from my work or home to visit more often.
