Is it already down for the count or am I doing something wrong? Would love to give a local station a try especially one that covers local talent. Will cross my fingers and give it another try a little later. Don't know just exactly how to rate a station that I've never heard but will give it the benefit of the doubt, seeing that it seems to have it's heart in the right place, and give it five stars for now.

Methinks this online radio station has been up and running about one year. It's the only radio in Charlotte that I can listen to. WNCW isn't bad but there's only so much bluegrass and mountain music one can take. I never have a clue what I'm listening to on PMCRADIO.ORG but it sounds fresh and different and wonderful. Plus, when I have it up on my computer screen, there is all this crazy stuff floating by - like artwork by local comic-dude Dustin Harbin and advertisements for local bands. Here are some of their shows - Audio Floss, Medieval Arab Lesbians (hey now!) and Viva Indie Rock! You may have seen it while channel surfing if you have Time Warner Cable (if you don't then you don't get it) and probably saw some lunatic preaching so you kept moving right along. Next time you're gonna sit in front of your TV check out channel 21 because sometimes they have some really cool, interesting and, best of all, local shows with a wide range of interests. Some of the cooler shows I've seen here are Z-axis, Crazy Late with Johnny Millwater and Scotty's Drive-In Theater. The best part is that for a small membership fee, $25, you can take some of their most involved TV production classes such as Basic Studio and Control Room. Other great opportunities to learn television production include Final Cut Pro X, Green Screen Lighting, Chroma Keying and Webcasting. CMPAC provides a great opportunity for Charlotte to display a wide range of opinions, voices and interests, unfortunately, the channel is mostly being overrun by religious programming.

Sometimes, the news shows seem to try so hard to be "different" and "hip" and "young" that it feels really contrived; however, when it works, it really works. The folks on the various local news shows have great chemistry, and it can be fun to observe their interactions. Sometimes, though, their antics become the focus of the program, and not the news or the commentary. I go back and forth. It's kind of like a train wreck, though, in that I can't stop watching. I'll watch the local news programs just so I can debate whether or not it's awful or funny or fun or horrid...and I've been watching it for about a year now, debating. I guess what they are doing is working, though, as I"d never deign to watch local news programming anywhere else. I hope somebody else reviews these guys, as I'd like to hear what you think...

The Edge is a show hosted by Brotha Fred from 96.1 & the beautiful Morgan Fogarty. It's a news show with a young, humorous flair to it. Other than their crazy weatherman, the normal newscast isn't anything special & I tune in to a couple other stations for the local news.

I was in high school and one if my friends had a brother who had an on air gig at this little AM radio station on a hill. Back in the day (I never use that phrase) if you didn't graduate from a broadcasting school, heck I still hadn't graduated from high school, the only way you could be on the radio was to get a license. I got sponsored by the chief engineer and after a few months of hard study and some hands-on I got my "3rd class radio-telephone operators license with broadcast endorsement" it was a mouth full. It was actually required for announcers who had to record meter readings or who operated low power radio broadcast stations From 1963 to 1978 an additional simple technical written test added "Broadcast Endorsement" to the "Third Phone" that allowed announcers to be the sole operators at some limited power stations. A 1st class was what the actual engineers needed. The FCC issued 1st and 2nd class licenses in 1927 then in 1953 a 3rd class was added. Hey, it was kinda a big deal, especially for a 15 year old but fast forward to today and all you need to do to get on the air is show up. Anyway, after I got my 3rd phone I got my first shot of being on the radio with a Saturday afternoon 4 hour show spinning rock n' roll, Wooohooo! The first "big" on-air phrase that I was known for, was my opening greeting, ready? .... "Welcome to your Saturday on wonderful whacky WIG-NACK in the mill village of the south, Gastonia, North Carolina". :-) Well it sounded better when I said it, and I did get a call from the station owner "Mr. McAwain" once that needed me to explain that phrase LOL I also got a call from the owner, and by call I mean "come to Jesus talking to" about my poor judgement of playing a song that he thought was a Vietnam protest. Well the song was "War" and he was correct. Those kind of exchanges were a harbinger of many, many more over the decades to come at the different radio gigs I had, But I digress. Back to WIG-NACK, it was founded by Mr. McSwain and his son in 1939 and is a 1,000 watt AM transmitter and 220 watt FM. The station has had many formats over the years, country, pop, rock, etc. but us currently a news-sport-talk station. They carry syndicated programs with Glenn Beck and Dave Ramsey and a lot of high school sports and even some MLB & NFL with local hosts in different day parts. Though…read moreeven those areas are subject to debate as the coverage in many parts of Charlotte is spotty due to other stations and a lot of the local content like the traffic and local news in the morning sound shipped from outside. Overall this old warhorse is turning into a nag that might as well be shipped off to the glue factory. The weekday mix while pleasant seems to have an overall blandness that short circuits the overall effect. And while the performances of the artists have a nice sheen and are very professional too many of the selections are blase without anything really interesting to say. And then about every 4th song a overplayed classic rock track gets ripped out. For a station that for years had specialty shows that did a wonderful job of showcasing the depths of the classic rock/aor history it is quite boring to tune in and to just be given what the commercial stations offer. In regards to evening/weekend specialty programming the blues and beach offerings are great when they stick to mining the stronger most time tested material but lose stature when delving into more recent material. To be honest I have always thought the over emphasis on the beach and shag on weekends turns away twice as many potential listeners as it attracts. Plus it gets tiring hearing what in many cases amounts to infomercials for Dr Phil Goode's or Reverend Kyle's next gig over at the VFW. But also those cats are bringing in a large share of the on air fundraising so I guess they can do what they well please. Now the 321 blues crew to their overall credit are much more professional in their decorum. Also even though they are Monday through Thursday 7-10 each night they never have seemed to oversaturate the airwaves, it is a programming staple and really the Marquee property of the station. What is needed is more variety in programming. Once upon a Time there were divergent options such as collegiate pop, electronica/techno, aor, new age, jam band, aor, big band, acid jazz, 80s retro and various other genres being offered and all had unique fan bases under the wsge umbrella. Now it feels like the musical offerings are much more stringent and narrow. The canned syndicated material like world Cafe is what it is, engaging filler. But even there the offerings seem truncated compared to the distant past. Fund drive time is always a big comedown. Not so much from the specialty programming because those guys and their audience come to the forefront and put their money where their mouths are. But during the meat of the weekday grind it is actually painful to listen to the pleading. In the end they still get my ears, but not my money and to be honest if they were to go away tomorrow I for one would lament their passing but overall really would not too worked up over the matter.

This is 1 of the 2 radio stations I actually listen to in the Charlotte area, as I've gotten away…read morefrom music radio. Being the only sports radio station in Charlotte though, I wish it were much better. But my 4 stars means I'm a fan, but mainly because I check it out even though I despise most of the hosts & shows. The main on air personality is Mark Packer, Billy Packer's son. He's a huge SEC fan & pretty much is Mr. Negativity about everything else...can you say like father, like son? He pretty much hates the ACC, but will slurp up SEC news all day. As for the other show, Chris McClain is the main host...which also boggles my mind. Why is a show based in Charlotte, the heart of ACC country, have one of their main shows hosted by a couple of Yanks? He's a Penn State fan & pretty much shows how he & his co hosts know nothing about the local college sporting realm. But like I said, I'm still a fan of this station to just hear the garbage that is spoken daily. It's a good place to tune into to yell at your radio aloud, wondering why they don't see the obvious points. I consistently want to call in & ask them what the heck they're doing.

WBAV 101.9 carries smooth jazz for the Charlotte area on their HD 2 channel. My wife's car tuned it…read morein and I've kept it there for a while. WBAV has a broadcast tower in Gastonia, the next town over from Charlotte. It is owned by Beasley Broadcast Group, The studios are located on South Boulevard in Charlotte's South End. Few commercials, light transitions and station identification breaks. Yep, it helps me relax when I'm fighting Charlotte traffic.
