ok-i have to come out and say right off the bat that i am not an artist, nor do i work with…read moreglass--although i did work at a company that did a lot of glass walls--think 1/2 inch glass--but this is a lot different. my girlfriend is the artist and works with glass and she and i had a discussion about coming here. i am totally enamored with the tour, the production and the information presented. what really blew my mind away is the trememdous customer service attitude that i witnesses today. she needs something specific, and the great care that was shown her in finding particular colors of glass really impressed me. too often it seems that in a lot of places the care of the customer is overlooked. not here--by a long shot. and you gotta take the tour even if you are not looking to buy or work with glass. it is fantastic to watch and i suppose in the oven room on a very cold winter day would be a great place to be but even so today was delightful even with the heat outside. thanks again for the time and care that everyone showed us today in trying to find something special. and yes, the drive was worth it.

Kokomo Opalescent Glass is America's oldest glass manufacturing company. They began manufacturing…read morecolorful sheet glass in 1888 and, today, produce 75% of the world's stained glass. I took a tour of their factory today. Tours are available weekdays by calling their office. The 45 minute tour costs $6 for adults and $3 for students. The tour starts and ends in their small gift shop. We visited and saw demonstrations of molten glass moving from furnaces to make sheet glass. We learned about how they mix colors and recycle waste glass. We visited their warehouse and learned about the different qualities of glass and how the glass is shipped. Finally, we saw artisans making decor pieces from the glass. Our tour guide was friendly and interesting. I had trouble hearing her in the furnace room, but still was able to follow. Closed shoes must be worn (no sandals). They provide safety glasses. We found ample parking in their lot. Restrooms are available on site. The buildings are ancient and interesting. The furnace building holds a beehive furnace that was interesting, but is no longer operational. Worth a visit to this Indiana treasure.

The gift shop is also filled with beautiful home decor/garden decor items. Their prices are a little higher, but comparable to size, I feel they are right in line with their pricing.

The merchandise is mostly trendy farmhouse style, displayed with a mix of lovely antiques. Horton's is popular in the town of Tipton, having served the community since 1976 and makes a great girl's weekend shopping visit. The store is large, separated by vignettes of various themes. There is a small area of children's books and gifts, a larger area of women's clothing, a candy counter with an amazing selection of fudge and chocolates, house plant supplies and seasonal home decor. I was fascinated by the Victorian-era antiques, but most are not for sale, just display. Prices are on the high side, but inline with an upscale boutique. The staff is helpful, but not intrusive letting customers wander. There is parking in front and behind the store.

They come from excellent greenhouses so they get a great start and look fresh when you get them! The ferns and flowers to choose from are a plenty! Just come and see for yourself! You pay just a little more for these plants but they will not be found wilted. These plants are well cared for and will last all summer long if you continue with the care they were given! It's a great time of year at Horton's!

The blankets are very well made and sturdy and really hold up in the frigid winters. It is also a beautiful way to honor my wonderful parents!

Now that I live out of state I have to call to order arrangements. They have gone to premade planters and arrangements choices when you order. You cannot make changes. I expect more from a local florist. I was also disappointed in the person taking phone orders, they were not helpful at all.

Physically it kept surprising me, there were more and more tiny rooms stuffed with yarny goodness. There is very creative us of space to put as much fiber as possible into a cosy and welcoming space. There's a good variety of fibers and also a variety of prices. The selection is not huge but it is more than several small stores I have been to. I certainly found more there that I wanted to purchase than I had budgeted for! There is yarn all the way from a good sturdy machine washable Encore to luscious angora and lovely hand dyed sock yarns suitable for envy inspiring socks or shawls. It's on an easy to access main street, with plenty of parking in front as well as next door. There are also several good food options available within walking distance, or a very short drive. I'll certainly return to this friendly and dangerous (to the wallet!!) yarn shop. Oh, and just in case you pass out from the yarn fumes and need to be revived, there's a good hospital right across the street!
