The Wedge has a surprising variety of well picked groceries, including very fresh fruit and a nice place to relax outside on a summer day. People are super friendly like they enjoy working here. Bonus for lots of bike racks out front including one shaped like a cat! Absolutely no reason not to come and buy from the co-op. If you have been watching that big national lux food chain go downhill with dismay, the Wedge will brighten your day. read more

The Wedge is great. I'm only giving it 4 stars right now because I haven't tried out it's full range. Haven't tried the burritos, or the bread. When I do try some of their prepared foods I'll update my review to that 5th star, or at least I'm expecting to be able to! I live nearby and regularly buy various fruits and veggies here. What keeps me coming in is their bulk greens bins. SO CHEAP. Plus I love to buy my greens in small amounts so that it doesn't go bad. You can buy a big amount about equivalent to a bag of Dole crap and it'll run you $2. For organic happy greens. Take that Dole! I also love that sometimes their organic produce is the same price as regular. Organic lemons or conventional for the same price? Organic! Granted, it's probably because the conventional lemons were overpriced, but does that really matter? A recent discovery was their bulk spices. I'm coming back baby! A huge money saver. Plus you can get a nice glass jar to store them in for only $1. So even if you buy the jar plus the spice you still come up saving money. Another great thing about the Wedge (alright based on the number of favorite things I've already come up with I should just give up the 5 stars right now) is their meat. I bought an organic free range whole chicken for only $0.20 more per pound than the price per lb for the 2 pack at Costco (yes I compare prices that much). Plus the guy at the counter was really nice and picked out the smallest one just for me. And I really liked that it was from a MN farm to boot. Generally speaking their packaged goods are overpriced, but I'm ok with that because really I should be eating the fresh stuff. Plus that's what Whole Foods is for. Not what it used to be, but okay. We spent $100 on 2 bags of groceries that lasted one person 4 days. Expensive! Although the selection was not great for some items, we were able to put together a basic menu of mostly organic and fresh food. I love my local co-op! Sure, prices are higher than your conventional grocery store but you're getting what you pay for. I hear complaints that some produce items run out or are inconsistent, do you realize that the majority of the produce came from local farms? Who doesn't want to eat local, delicious produce?! Another plus is the meat is also local, and the name of the farm is also given. There is no having to read labels with high scrutiny to ensure what you're eating is cruelty free unlike conventional grocery stores. They've recently remodeled and oh my god! Check out the cheese station, it's a sight to behold. Don't be intimidated by bulk tea, grains, spices it is the best and most cost effective way to get your spices for anything you may need. So if you're like me and care about the quality and sustainability of the food you eat, you'll love The Wedge! (Plus everyone there is super nice!) read more

I have a real love-hate relationship with the wedge. It is close, which I love. It feels dirty, which I hate. The parking lot is a also a disaster to get in and out of, but what can you do, we all need organic figs, right? The Wedge has very good local produce, but usually at a higher price than I want to spend (and relative to other grocery stores). They also have a solid selection of pre-made foods and breads, and their selection of non-meat protein type things is unrivaled. Also, do yourself a solid and get a cone of the coconut soft-serve at the juice bar (pro-tip: the juice bar closes an hour before the grocery store). I use the Wedge for quick pick-ups and specialty items (the coconut soft-serve), but for my larger shopping trips i stick to Whole Foods and the Linden Hills Coop. read more

I love the Wedge. I still get a little lost looking for certain items since I don't shop there too frequently, but they have a diverse selection of gluten free baked goods which is an easy route to my heart. The Wedge gluten free bread is insanely good for grilled cheeses (and other paninis, but I'll be honest-I'm a grilled cheese fiend). There's a lot more goodness to the Wedge other than it's friendliness to people with food allergies/intolerances, which is already pretty fantastic by itself. They seem to really care about their employees and their food sourcing is very conscientious. Looking forward to digging into the personal care section next time. My husband and I have seen many changes to the Wedge over the years. He remembers it's first hole-in-the-wall location when it was on Franklin Av in the 1970s. I remember it in the 80s at a different site on Lyndale Av. We have a long history with the Wedge and before it's latest update we were very mindful to buy ALL our food and household items there because of the annual membership dividend was very significant. We even purchased our paper products and cleaning products there exclusively for the belief in what co-ops stood for. Since the redesign a couple of years ago which lasted about a year, we have drastically reduced our visits and purchases because my husband is very into cooking and part of the update was a swap of reducing 30% of their variety of products for in door seating. Yes, this is what the customers said they would want in an update BUT people were not giving an informed choice by telling them the variety of stock would go down 30% or more! We used to get everything we needed at the Wedge and now that we can't, there's no motivation to exclusively shop there. Our spending has dropped 90% since the update. I added a photo of small organic scallions for $3.99 at the Wedge and large organic scallions at Whole Foods for $1.49 so you decide what is a better deal! read more

The Wedge Co-op in Minneapolis has the largest selection of vegan baked goods in the Twin Cities, and all that I've tried are delicious and lovely to look at, as well. The deli bakery case features vegan cupcakes, cookies, cake and pie slices and muffins, in a variety of flavors and prices range from $1.39 for cookies to $3.99 for cake slices. Whole cakes and pies, and custom cakes, are also available by special order. On a recent visit, cupcake choices included a black forest cupcake (chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting and cherry topping) and a white cupcake with vanilla frosting and blueberry topping, each for $3.49. I've had the frosting on a number of cupcakes and cakes and cannot figure out how they make it so smooth, creamy and rich with all-vegan ingredients. There were vegan chocolate-covered peanut butter balls ($1.49), and slices of lemon poppy seed cake, chocolate fig cake, blueberry rhubarb streusel pie and chocolate tofu cream pie. (The chocolate cream pie is creamy and chocolatey with a flakey crust.) A few banana blueberry muffins ($2.29) were still available even though it was later in the afternoon. There are so many types and flavors of vegan cookies, it's hard to decide: thumbprints cookies with apricot, strawberry or blueberry filling, cardamom orange oatmeal cookies, macaroons, raisin pecan oatmeal cookies, tollhouse chocolate chip, peanut butter chocolate chip and carob almond. All cookies are $1.39 each. The Wedge deli bakery also offers custom vegan cakes - the only ones I've found in the Twin Cities - and they are spectacular. Cake flavors available are vanilla, chocolate, carrot, chocolate raspberry, carob, German chocolate and lemon poppy seed. Creamy icing flavors are vanilla, chocolate, orange, raspberry, lemon, carob and peanut butter. Sizes available are 6- or 9-inch round layered cakes ($19.99 to $39.99) and quarter, half and full sheet cakes ($39.99 to $99.99). The bakery requests that orders be place 48 hours before pick-up. My first time here since I'm used to Seward Coop. Pluses: parking lot is big and very friendly burrito order taker, Man on floor and cashier and bagging person. The Prices are a little higher but I bought some things on sale. The Avocado burrito was lacking in flavor. Needs salsa which I thought it had on it. Bathrooms in front on store were clean. This store could be remodeled. Cute planter in front of store. I was in the area so did not make a special trip. Will probably return. One thing is they dont ask you to round up your credit card for their designated monthly charity, instead your .10 for bringing a Bag could go there if you wish or a dime off your purchase. This I liked better than Seward Coop also. read more

I recently relocated to Minneapolis from San Francisco. I really, REALLY appreciate the number of natural food co-ops in Minneapolis, and am frankly surprised that SF does not have more. Unfortunately for San Franciscans, the only choice that even compares to the co-op system here is Rainbow Grocery which is almost exactly like the Wedge, but it is all vegetarian and is is worker-owned. It is not at ALL like the Rainbow Grocery here in Mpls. Maybe if you could buy memberships at Rainbow, it would not be as expensive and the workers would not be such jerks. San Franciscans: I know you know what I mean. Anyway...on to the good stuff. They have a decent bulk section, a good variety of eggs, loose greens by the pound, wild mushrooms, seasonal produce, grass fed beef, and generally all the things I would normally buy at Farmer's Markets or Rainbow in San Francisco. in comparison, however, the selection is pretty pale. If you like fish that is low on the food chain, head immediately to the refrigerated section across from the meat counter, where you will find smoked lake trout! Both Pickled and smoked herring? Hell YES! I have not been to the Seward co-op, but this has been my go-to so far so I haven't really needed to. read more

Aside from the hoooorrrrrible parking lot, the Wedge is awesome. The deli, the bulk items, the bakery, the meat counter, the cheese -- all of it. I'm always impressed when I tell a meat guy I need beef for bulgogi and he knows *exactly* what I need and how I need it cut. Membership is totally worth it. What to say about the Wedge? It is a great little co-op that has a great variety of things for it size. Less of the mass market and more of the slightly off beat stuff you would expect. However, as mentioned it does have high prices, the parking is jammed, and the customer service is nothing better than elsewhere (some great employees, some eh). However, if you are a member you get a little back and the employees are treated better than at a lot of other retail jobs. Is it really that bad to pay a little more so someone gets a living wage? Plus you can find some interesting things here. If I'm going to pay Whole Foods prices, I'd rather give my money to a co-op anyway. However, regular grocery stores have gotten better selection over the years, so if price and selection are you main drivers there isn't a lot to hold you here. read more

I've been shopping at the Wedge for a year now, and finally became a member last week. A little pricey, but they have a wonderful staff, high quality choices, and always have something interesting for me to pick up. They have the best coffee and tea selection I've found, a fantastic meat department, and a really really good deli. They have a great social media presence, so if you use Twitter you will get told about specials. Their cheese selection isn't the best but you can't be perfect. If you want good food all year round you can't really beat the Wedge if you live in the Uptown neighborhood. read more

The prices at the Wedge are always going to be higher than what you'd see at Cub or Lunds and Byerly's but you know you're paying for high-quality, sustainable products. The groceries are a curated selection of products that the Wedge staff thinks you'll like and you can have faith that they're all up to snuff on quality and sustainability. My favorite part of the store is the bulk section. You can get traditional bulk foods like raisins and granola, but they also have some less common bulk items like pasta and maple syrup. The prices are again a little high, but there is some great stuff to choose from. The deli has some great prepared foods, my personal favorite is the southwestern black bean salad, but the garlic lovers pasta salad is another go-to for me. read more

When I first moved into my new Uptown apartment, I was pretty worried about where I was going to grocery shop. But, when I realized I lived about half a block away from the Wedge, I figured "what the heck" and decided to check it out. I had no idea there was such a thing as a produce-gasm, but the Wedge taught me differently. Up until recently, I'd only really shopped at the Quarry Rainbow due to its proximity to the U, but the Wedge completely turned me into a co-op girl. There's just such a different feeling to shopping at a co-op. You know the products on the shelves were CHOSEN, not just slopped up there because they are what's conventionally available. And if you shop smartly, you actually can save some money. And even if you are paying a bit more for some things, if you get savvy with bulk foods and fresh cooking, you can cut down on your costs in the long run. I haven't been able to to become a member yet, but once I have the extra money, I will definitely join. The Wedge has really made me conscious of what I eat and where it comes from; for that, I am grateful they are my neighbors. read more

I can't even tell you how much I like The Wedge, especially when compared to other "similar options" in the twin cities. The people are awesome, helpful, and nice. It always seems really clean in there, I always feel safe taking samples and that is not the case at many grocery stores. They have a great selection, I especially enjoy the selection of meats and also the special emphasis they place on making sure they have available goods for people with food allergies. Their juice bar is seriously amazing too, I just can't help stopping every time I'm in there. Yes, it can get a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for and they run a daily special on a certain smoothie/juice everyday so there's always that. They have a ton of bike racks which is super cool and they also have a parking lot. I've never had a bad experience at The Wedge yet! read more

It's way too expensive and they got rid of some of my favorite vegan hot bar items after the remodel (such as seitan stew, mango seitan curry and others). I used to go out of my way to the Wedge for those curries. Most of the current hot bar offerings are boring and not worth the money. The coconut soft serve is tasty. Overall I can't shop here much since it's just way too pricy for me. And I don't like how they changed the member discounts I think it's just once quarterly. The Wedge satisfies my need for both organic & local foods and my preference for some gourmet items. Is the price on the shelf higher than Cub? Sometimes, yes, but I'm convinced I get it back by not needing a doctor or pharmacist because the Wedge provides what my body needs to stay healthy. I can't really add much about the products available (good selection, some hard to find stuff, and not that bad of prices), but I have to give a shout-out to the breakfast burrito available 7 days a week from 9 AM to noon. Delicious, cheap, and satisfying -- probably my favorite quickie, take-out breakfast I've found in the Twin Cities. The hot sandwiches are awesome as well, with (of course!) awesome vegetarian and vegan options. While I don't usually do my grocery shopping here, for a quick hot meal, this is one of my go-to spots. read more

Oh how I love the smell of the Wedge. I don't know what it is about the mix of organic produce and grains in bulk that convalesces into that wonderfully pungent aroma, but every time I go there it is like crack to me. The Wedge is THE uptown destination for your green lifestyle, selling everything from soaps to steel cut oats (organic, of course!) and boasting a magically delicious deli. Almost every time I go just to grab a bite I invariably grab the spinach and gorgonzola pasta (don't even bother trying it, you WILL become addicted) or a leg of Cajun chicken (heaven on a bone). The deli people are super nice and will give you a tiny paper cup of whatever you need to try before you make up your indecisive mind. They also have a fantastic supply of organic beauty supplies and a very helpful staff. Despite the premium price on most goods, the Wedge is a great spot for organic, vegan, or just plain delicious buys. read more

I have been a member of the Wedge since 1983 I think it is. There is just something about Minnesota and also something about the way we (okay most) can cooperate. The majority of cooperatives locally are fabulous and I truly feel abandoned when I have to travel as I have yet to find a place that compares. The Wedge is the epitome of the coop model. I am always astounded when I read my newsletters about how they pay down the debt, spend the money on good expansions and how they have come to this nirvana of a cooperative in that beautiful building from that teeny 7-11 so many years ago. The selection is fabulous. The membership pays for itself in about 6 months (well, that is if you have to get a membership now). The baked goods. OMG! love those peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. They are always so accommodating and nice. They have also brought much to the local CSA movements and the warehouse space and and and... a business to emulate in this time of over capitalism and greed. Looking at all the 5-star ratings for the Wedge, I know I'll be in the minority. I think the Wedge is a good co-op. Certainly they have a great selection (I really like their bulk nut butters.) But the environment can make for a less than pleasant experience. The Wedge has just about everything you would want from a co-op. That said, aisles are tight and if you have to drive, the parking situation is pretty bad. It's usually crowded. When I want a better co-op experience, and it's on the way, I prefer stopping by The Seward. The Wedge is in my neighborhood and I am a member. read more

Love this place! I am new to the area and co-op scene, and have been very happy when I joined The Wedge. Sure, some of their items are expensive, but there is a great selection of bulk and sale items. Staff is always very friendly and helpful. I always steer outside visitors to the place, and they LOVE it. Thanks! My only gripe is the parking. There is SO MUCH! For a place that wants to be truly sustainable, it would be nice to convert one of their three (3!) lots into a garden or something that encourages people to get to the store by ways other than driving. read more

Ohhhhh, the Wedge. How I miss it. I've just moved out of state, and this is one of the few things I am going to TRULY miss. There is parking for dayyyyyys, which Minneapolitans know the true value of. The place makes me feel content the second I walk in. It's got this amazing good-vibe that hits u like a Xanax when you walk in. Everything is really organized well and it is easy to find what you're looking for. The fresh produce is bommbbbbb, and the prices are nowhere near what you'll pay at Whole Wallet. EVERYTHING is fresh and organic, so you don't have to squint at labels to get something that won't upset your stomach. The deli in the way back corner is boss when it comes to smoothies. They are delicious and the baristas are hella friendly. Upon checking out, a friendly employee will eagerly ask to bag your things-- and put the eggs on top. I love the Wedge for its variety of food that caters to all kinds of dietary needs. I recently cut gluten from my diet, and I knew that shopping at the Wedge wouldn't be a frustrating experience despite my new restrictions. Their produce is always fresh (I have never seen anything that even looks slightly out-of-date) and their fresh-made foods have all been absolutely delicious. I don't find it to be too pricey for what it is offering, and the staff is always friendly and helpful. I find it hard to shop anywhere else. read more

Food is good as ever and I love my member discount, but once again the manager known as Kevin took it upon himself to harass me about shopping with my vest wearing, standing by my side service dog. This time he interrupted the nice elder lady employee from visiting with us while we were waiting in line and demanded she not touch my dog because he's a service dog, to which I replied he's actually ok to be petted because the service he provides doesn't ask as much of the dog as some of the many other tasks performed by service dogs. Yet Kevin the twice now harassing manager cant seem to find anything better to do, including taking a meditation or smoke break, and insisted once again on swinging his perceived authority of the Co-OP Grocery Manager On Duty badge and once again took it upon himself to mansplain at the person with a service dog how service dogs are supposed to work according to his obviously encyclopedic knowledge on the subject, which-if memory serves from the previous occasion when he attempted to kick my friend and I and Doc out of the store in a situation where even the security guard pled the fifth and refused to participate in the interaction at all-but Kevin attempted to educate me with my service dog about how service dogs are for people who have seizures and his cousin has one. Which in and of itself is actually fairly common of a conversation between myself and people of all ages from 5 to 99. The difference with Kevin, is he was convinced that only his experience was valid and accurate and from the way he has been treating me he seems entirely doubtful about the legitimacy of my service dog. Wish I could just drop off some paperwork confirming the falseness of his aggressive suspicions and not have to endure the expressions of frustration Kevin displays as he comes to terms with his short man syndrome or whatever he's got going on. Ugh. Really makes me wish there were another Co-OP option a block away... le sigh read more

I go to the Wedge for very specific things. Meat and fish. They have the best meat and fish that I've found in the Twin Cities. You should be prepared to pay a little more but it is worth it to get a good cut and it's always fresh. The spices are also great. They carry the best yellow curry in the bulk section and it's one of the few places I can find saffron. I can't shop here for all of my needs, but I do shop here when I need the good stuff! read more

I'm usually closer to Sewards, so I don't visit The Wedge as often as I would like. While both of these co-ops provide everything you could possibly need, there are some differences to keep in mind. The parking at The Wedge seems to be much more "cramped" than at Sewards. There is parking on both sides of the building, but the area seems very congested. In an ideal world you can walk or bike when needed, in which case they provide excellent racks for storing bikes. The produce selection at The Wedge seems to be larger and more diverse than at Sewards. I assume that this co-op is very popular because it can get quite crowded at times which will require some quick-thinking cart maneuvers. If you prefer to buy local and organic you should have no problem finding anything you need at this co-op. I even found some items that I used to buy in my home country of South Africa. read more

Food is yummy but expensive. If you want to take advantage of it, there are options for lessening the price of your groceries, but it involves being a part of the co-op, which may or may not involve working there, I'm still not sure. I take myself there for treats and for the occasional organic grocery item. Best to approach from the south on Lyndale... if you try to turn left into their parking lot (Lyndale is very busy, and more so during rush hour), you're going to have a bad time. Good people, doing good work. I don't mind paying the premium... wish I had more time and liquidity to be a co-op member. Maybe someday! Edit: 9/11/2016: We've been members for over a year now. I love this Co-op. I am grateful for its existence. Awesome, awesome meat counter. Great produce. Great bulk selection, bulk spices... love this place. Adobo pork sausages - so good! But I digress. My only (minor) beefs are that 1. It's not close enough to our house (but that's my problem!) and 2. when it's crowded, it's crazy, and getting there is a beast just based on the location. Wow! My husband and I have been a member of this co-op since 2007 and I'm realizing that there are some things that are going downhill. Please don't get me wrong, I like this place and have for a long time but I'm liking it less and less. Firstly, the prices are getting outrageous- literally every time I look at my receipt I tell myself that there were some miscalculations, but usually (except just a few times) there aren't. I'm thinking especially of the produce and of the cheeses. For god sake's the cheese is getting so expensive here and you get a sliver. The only deals for the cheese that seem to arise are perhaps 12 dollars per pound instead of 13 dollars. Sadly, I'm starting to buy my cheese elsewhere. But do check out the naked goat which is incredible but becoming more and more expensive at the Wedge. Secondly, there is a huge difference professionally between the staff on the floor and the staff at the meat and fish section and the deli. The difference is, I feel like the staff that aren't at a station of deli or meat/fish are on social hour. The deli and meat/fish workers are super stars. But for the staff on the floor, I don't know when their social hour ends so I'm starting to feel more and more like I'm parading on their conversations. Working at the Wedge is very competitive; you have really great benefits and very competitive pay, so why aren't more of the staff treating it like a professional job. I'm really tired of hearing them chat not with customers but with each other. I'm sorry to write that because I know they must all get along but hang out time can be better spent after work in some cool bar or at a BBQ. The cashiers are always a hit or miss as some either are polite and kind while others are counting the minutes before they perhaps watch Daria on MTV. I don't mean to generalize which I know I am but I also think that every time someone has helped me bag my groceries that they have been also extremely nice and professional- every single time. Thirdly, I have always liked this place but like I said, some things including some staff and prices are starting to lure me to other co-ops. I have done some wandering around town guys to other co-ops and I have found the following, I also need to mention that I do not work in a co-op but I'm just giving you a heads up: The best bulk section especially tea wise for me is the Linden Hills Co-op though the produce is even more expensive than at the Wedge. I have to mention that I have only found some teas here such as Vanilla Rooibos- best tea selection thus far in the Coop Minneapolis world. I also have found that the staff is incredible here. They helped me figure out where the hour car was (the information desk is amazing) and even people on the floor are helpful. The Eastside Coop has hands down some of the coolest produce that you can't find elsewhere. More Asian inspired produce and good prices, they also have the best discounts and with a receipt from this coop you get a specific percent off at the liquor store in front on Thursdays I think. Worth a look! The Seward Coop has some beautiful plants and a nice section of everything in bulk. The staff is really attentive and really charming. I think this coop is the most family oriented of all the co-ops- nice sections for everyone. Overall, I'm only a member at the Wedge but I'm starting to find other Co-ops equally attractive in different ways and I wouldn't have wandered unless I was given reason to.
