Weegee's may be filling the hole in my heart left by what's become of the California Clipper. I'm still feeling burned by that, I won't lie, but Weegee's is slowly drying my tears. The atmosphere is chill but fun. They manage to have shufflboard without the bro-factor and the photobooth is in excellent condition. No streaky or blown out photos here. I'm looking at you, Quimby. Bartenders are friendly and know their stuff. Cocktails are delicious and interesting, though maybe just a dollar on the high side for the neighborhood, not that that stops me from going there. They have some decent beers and there is a mysteriously affordable $5 Wisconsin old fashioned. As the menu says, "if you have to ask, you don't want it." read more

The most important word in my review is: shuffleboard. They have frakking shuffleboard! That's just rad! They also have a great beer selection, an exceptionally friendly staff, and an inviting, warm environment in which to drink moderately expensive (yet quality) liquids. Bonus points for having ice in their urinals. Melting the ice is the second best game within their establishment. This bar veers toward the bearded and shaved head crowd. I was probably the only patron who hasn't read any Dostoyevsky. The only downside of the joint is it's location. It's in the middle of nowhere (I want to be). You will definitely need to drive/cab/bike to Weegee's. The second most important word in my review is: photobooth. read more

When I first moved to the southwestern part of Logan, I was quite depressed with my surroundings. But then I found Weegee's. This bar rocks. They have a turntable and play old jazz & reggae. Has a really cool vibe. Excellent , professional & courteous staff. Great beer selection (though they could use a few more on tap, not too fond of their tap selections). The crowd is diverse, with a selection of hipsters, locals, and various neighborhood couples who stop by to tie one down. Always a cool crowd. It has never been too crowded when I've been there. Also, they allow cigar smoking, which is a big plus for me! Though I have never ordered any, they also serve real cocktails, which are intriguing. This is an absolutely great bar to go and hang out with friends and get a drink. read more

Eh, I probably wont go back. I did enjoy the shuffleboard though Didnt know of the alcohol snobbery before I went. Asked for a Capt and diet, and then jack and diet. Asked why they didnt have either. As he rocked back and forth he explained to me he didnt want mass produced and marketed liquors in his place. Pretty much telling me I have shit taste in the drinks I order. Dont get me wrong, I dont think otherwise, just really snobby of someone to say to a new customer. The girls and gays I hang out with all have shitty taste and like our mass produced stuff. I do know guys that like to discuss alcohol and swizzle it around. Kudos to them, but not me. Also its in a super bad area, nothing else really around, and considering the location they are kind of pricey. $10 and $12 martini's. read more

I went here for the first time the other night, though I had heard about it before. I really, really liked it. I sat at the bar with a friend and we each had a couple cocktails. So, my experience centered around the cocktails, which were quite tasty and a nice change of pace and not absurdly priced, and the bartender, who was really cool and nice. He would make something off the menu if you asked and clearly knew what he was doing. And was fun to watch in action. There was good music playing, but it wasn't so loud you couldn't have a conversation. The place was fairly crowded, but still felt divey, which I think is a pretty impressive feat. Plus it's actually really nice, nice wood bar, nice bar stools, not dirty at all, so it's not really a dive, it just has the right feel. There is a shuffleboard table that had a group of people around it. Looked like fun. In addition, there is a great beer list and many draught choices. Usually I'm a beer drinker, so this excites me. I'll go back and try them sometime. Overall, I just really liked the atmosphere. If you're into dives but don't necessarily want grime, check this out. read more

The stout beer selection is great but the feel and the vibe is definitely old school. No TVs and no wifi, so I have to caution anyone if those amenities are nonnegotiable then this particular dive bar is not for you... When visiting Chicago for a few days we decided to hunt for some great cocktail bars and stumbled upon a NYT article with a few recommendations. Among them was Weegee's. The neighborhood is definitely off the beaten path... Enough so that our Uber driver called to make sure we were in the right place after dropping us off! But yes, correct bar. But super weird experience. We were there early evening on a weekday so I wasn't expecting it to be busy, and it definitely wasn't. We go to the bar and take a seat expecting to be able to have a pleasant experience with an obviously not so busy bartender. However, it was one of the most awkward bar experiences I've ever had in my life. I conversationally asked for a recommendation, and was starkly shut down. For the most, we felt rather unwelcome and burdensome. Sadly, this place has the potential to be an excellent well-hidden gem. The drinks were great classic pours and prices were about average. The old-school feel of the place was quaint and the shuffleboard in the corner could probably offer a good time. However, none of these positive could outweigh the general weirdness of the atmosphere. Maybe another bartender would be a bit more friendly? One could only hope... So, all in all. Great drinks. But a good chance the bartender will make you feel super weird. read more

Too quiet for me. To me, quiet in a bar=boring. Secondly, the neighborhood is frightening. Lots of blue light specials if you know what I mean. While this didn't deter me from visiting and I was able to find parking right outside the bar, I just thought others should know. Once inside (it was hard to find because I didn't see any signage!) the nice interior did not match the rough exterior neighborhood. Great is the place that overcomes a heinous cloud of the strongest stench to win my heart. Like the musk of the Kraken in full rut, we tangled with this odious funk on Saturday night while sipping fine cocktails in celebration of my girlfriend's birthday. A bona fide olfactory flop, Weegee's hits on every other mark to make for a primo bar experience. Our bartender--he goes by the handle Skinny Rabbit--made it a habit of calling me "brother," and expertly crafted several outstanding drinks. Be it a Brandy Alexander, Sloe Gin Fizz, or Old Fashioned, each drink was a delight. Yet I would advise you to steer clear of the Amanda's Tears: The drink is as tasty as the name is uplifting. Are the cocktails pricey? Guilty as charged, but it's hard to find a place that specializes in making regular cocktails. Leave the fruity, blended nonsense to lesser bars, Weegee's is going to give you the genuine article so shell out a couple extra greenbacks and enjoy. If cocktails just don't get you fired up, take on some of their awesome beer selection. My suggestion? Try the private, home brew that they feature. On Saturday we sampled a triple Belgian brewed by an anonymous Chicagoan. It is nice to see a bar give a home brewer a forum to showcase their talent. Aside from the elephant flatus in the room, the ambiance is top tier. Weegee's has shuffleboard, plays some nice tunes (Chet Baker with Strings on Saturday), boasts a photo booth, and has many of Weegee's crime scene photos hanging on the walls. It's a cozy, friendly, old timey joint, and if you don't mind traveling all the way out to the 60647, you might just have yourself a dandy time. read more

Just went for the first time last night -- on a Saturday. The place is very nice and quite a gem for its location. I tend to enjoy bars that are good for conversation and Weegee's was definitely that as it was not too busy and the music was not very loud. The bartender/owner, however, was a prick. He welcomed us with the enthusiasm of an airport McDonald's order taker. He seemed very uninterested that we were about to spend money at his establishment. He was very short when explaining that every draft beer on the menu was wrong as they were being switched out for some new seasonal brews. Most people would be a little apologetic but he acted annoyed when he had to repeat his quickly spewed out list of new selections. And don't even think about ordering Jack Daniels unless you want some major attitude. There were little things too like hording all the drink menus behind the bar instead of on the bar so you have to ask for one instead of just grabbing one. And for a place with what I suspect is more than 100 drinks looking at the list is crucial. Since he was the only person working I had to wait a few minutes o get his attention. Despite all that, I'll definitely give it another chance but mainly because there are so few options in Logan Square. I hope the owner gets his attitude in check because it isn't becoming and won't help his business. read more

Weegee's is an easy place to miss but if you don't pass it up and are able to make it in you are in for a fine treat. They have an outstanding beer selection and almost an even better selection of cocktails. Go with a sidecar, or an Old Fashioned, or why not go all the way and get a 12 dollar Manhattan. Now 12 dollars for a Manhattan may seem a bit steep but it's a damn fine drink. This isn't a place to be drinking a $5 MGD, spend the money on a good beer or a cocktail, you will enjoy yourself a lot more. Weegee's also has free shuffleboard. The shuffleboard is a very tricky table but makes for a really good game. All around I really liked this bar and I have to give Jonathan A, a big thanks for recommending it. Amazingly rehabbed bar, they discovered and restored the original charm of the building, tearing through fake brick and many other questionable interior "design". So much character, and class, without pretention. Focused look and mood; the music is astounding; only blues, jazz and soul, so don't ask to hear Interpol or some similar overrated "indie" cack. It may be on what many considered the west end of ANYTHING, but that almost make's Weegee's more appealing to this barfly. No pretention, hipsters or gangstas(wanabees). The owner, Alex, is a great barman and person and with all his years of experience has created a great enviroment for true enthusiasts. The rest of the staff, though small, are all excellent, friendly and knowledgable and no doubt add another appealing attribute to this fine establishment. The cocktail list is, as many have said here, a throwback, in my opinion it's a relief to see a proper cocktail list. No "panty dropper" martinis here, thank f**k! Try a drink that may have been your grandfather's favourite tipple, and realise there's a reason it's endured the decades. The beer list is top notch, be prepared to be adventurous if you're a Heineken, Corona, Old Style or god-forbid a Miller or Bud drinker. There's none of that here. Great American Craft selection, something for every palate and mood. That being said, the prices are right on, accessible to all. There's plenty of seating, and a lovely vintage shuffleboard table if you're so inclined. If I didn't work in the industry myself, I'd probably be a fixture here. Weegee's is truly one of the best things in my locale, if not the city in general and it deserves to be discovered and adored. Even if you're nowhere near, make the trip, you'll see. read more

Ah Weegee's. The ultimate bar paradox: On the one hand I wish you were closer to my house; on the other if that were the case you'd be entirely too crowded, and we can't be having that. A trip to Weegee's is akin to taking a journey through time back to the speakeasy days of Chicago. The bar will instantly make you think they're serving moonshine and homemade wine, but lucky for us that's not the case. Perfect cocktails? Check. Amazing beer selection? Check. Shuffleboard? Checkmate. Some people have stated the bartender(s) are rude. This couldn't be further from the truth; I've never had any problems, as they've always been more than helpful. A trip to Weegees reminds you of what real bars are supposed to be like: stiff drinks with a laid back crowd and jazz on in the background. And a shuffleboard. read more

Okay- I just have to edit this. At some point a couple years ago I started noticing an overwhelming poop smell in here. I thought that it was a minor malfunction that would pass- but it never did. I can't take going here anymore unless it is Summer, so that I can sit on the back patio away from the poo smell. I'm so sad about missing out on this place in the cool/cold seasons. Holy Cow! Yes! Small bar does not have beer for me and this place does. My date last night ordered a beer that was $5, but at other places it is $7/8. I drank German malt beer that I had never had before. My favorite cocktail I had last time had almond in it, but can't remember the name. I always seem to spill out of the martini glasses they use though!! Cozy little bar in Logan Square. A friend told me about it (it's 2 blocks form my house) and I was excited to check it out. It's a clean little old man style bar with a long, classic bar, and tables to seat about 20 people. They play strictly jazz (Coltrane/Mingus/Dolphy,etc...not Kenny G) and a photo booth in the back.They also have an old school shuffelboard. Lots of fun when you've had 8 or 9 . The bartenders are super friendly, and the drinks are priced right on. There is a menu for cocktails. Their bourbon selection is quite nice. Great place to meet friends for drinks-instead of screaming over shitty alterna rock. The jazz seems to weed out the "undesirables". Love it...just don't fuck it up for the rest of us. I love my girlfriend! She knows I have a Classic Vintage Style, and for my birthday she just went above in beyond to cater to my needs. We went for cocktails after my amazing birthday dinner to Weegee's. At first sight I thought she missed the mark. When we stepped in I felt like I time warped 60 years. You can definitely drive right past this place as we have on our way to Marble, but when not eating I definitely will be at Weegee's. The bartender dressed in shirt and tie. Amazing Classic Drinks, My favorite Pink Squirrel, and Disa had the Bocci Ball. Jenise R had this Cinnamon whiskey drink which put some chest hairs on lol but very tasty. I love this place. I don't say that about many places, but some places just a certain ambience, a certain character that it exudes when you walk in. WeeGee's has that. There is genuine feel of "neighborhood". The people are friendly, and there is a nice relaxed vibe. There is a shuffleboard in the back, and the bartenders are dressed in suites and dresses just to keep it classy. There is low lighting and a decor gives WeeGee's speakeasy appeal. As for their drinks, let's just say I was thoroughly impressed. I asked for recommendation and the bartender nailed it on the head. The cocktail was smooth, refreshing, complex, and oh so flavorful. Even the garnish of the lemon peel added to the cocktail because the scent of the citrus invoked a sweetness to the drink. The only thing I wish I did was write down what I had because it was phenomenal. Try this place. It's a little off the beaten path, but it was a great experience, and it's absolutely worth trying. read more

When someone told me there was a bar right by me with a shuffleboard table, I had to check it out. For some reason, due to circumstances or whatever, it took me about a year before I finally made my way here. Not a minute too soon. A cool place. It's off the beaten path a bit, and I ended up coming on a quiet Wednesday night. Nevertheless, there were about 10-15 people in the bar. It's a pretty classy place, and the crowd seemed pretty respectful and unpretentious. I'd say most people were in their upper 20s and 30s. It's low light, low key kinda place. The beer menu is pretty extensive to me. But the cocktail/shots are the specialty, so I hears. I just had a couple 3 Floyds Gumballs and vowed to come back to play some shuffleboard. One minor letdown: no mint juleps. Otherwise 5 stars. read more

The owner, who is pictured above, is one of the coldest, most unfriendly bartenders I've met in this city. I sat at the bar and he barely acknowledged my presence. The first thing he said when he greeted me was to tell me that he didn't know where most of his booze was stored. Then he asked for my ID (I'm over 40 and balding). Then I just sat there in silence with my beer. I tried once or twice to start a conversation, but he was non-responsive. He seemed annoyed I was there, despite my being the only person at the bar. I don't know whether the guy was having a bad night or something, but it seems like from the comments he is a moody guy. I only give this place two stars because the music is good. A pretty swank little "grown up" bar off the beaten path. Great bar for having a nice drink and chatting with friends or a date. The decor is very nice, and somewhat unexpected for the area. Vintage photos on the deep/dark painted walls, and even a photobooth in the back. They have a small selection of good beers with an emphasis on brands you won't see everywhere else. But they serve TRADITIONAL cocktails too- which I can't resist! No phony baloney chocolate martini crap. Come here for a Negroni or a Sidecar or a Manhattan. Mine have been prepared perfectly every time. Yup, I've been coming here quite a bit on Saturday's lately- it's definitely a great place for a low-key a drink with friends, I wouldn't come expecting a social scene...yet. With the way the city's evolving, I could see this place getting crowded in a few years. For now it's out of the way for most of the folks who'd enjoy it, which makes it worth getting to. read more

I went here over this past weekend and I must say I was impressed. It is quiet, sophisticated and friendly. They have interesting photography -- I believe it is named after the photographer Weegee seeing as most all of the photos are by Weegee. It is not all that crowded, which is a HUGE plus for me. It feels kind of like a bike messenger bar at times, with a lot of clientel wearing biking gear, bags, etc. They have most of the Unibroue beers within their beer selection, which is a big deal for me... they are my favorite beers afterall. Also, they have many micro-brewed liquors as well... all of which have been good. Oh, and the shuffleboard is pretty sweet. They actually had a bourbon that I had never had before, which gives them many bonus points for sure. I think I will coming back here periodically to spend some quality time with my friends. I biked out to Weegee's last night in the blustery cold and it was so worth the effort. We walked in and I was instantly enchanted by the whole atmosphere of the place. Cozy and swanky at the same time, old fashioned in the best ways... The lighting and the music and the drink list were all just perfect. It seemed like a slow night though it picked up the longer we stayed, and my friend and I certainly didn't mind having the (slightly tilted) shuffleboard to ourselves. The owner (I think) even gave us a rundown of the real rules and I lost miserably and won by hair while I drank hands down the best cocktail of my life... The Bocci Ball. I'm not always into sweet drinks but I was in the mood and this was seriously perfect, beating out even the Aviation I started with. I also got to taste a beer of which I've heard rave reviews, O'Fallon Smoke, which wrapped up my night well and made me pine for Texas bbq. I'm not a cocktail snob (though I love them) and in contrast to a former reviewer, I didn't find Weegee's overpriced for what it was or the least bit pretentious. Weegee's is laid back class, in the kind of quietly sighed "yesssssssss" sort of way. Very interesting cocktails (albeit very strong), friendly bar tender (really, he seems cranky at first but he's fine when you get him going), a resident cat, a shuffleboard, and a stinky B&W photo booth that the cat pisses in. The lights are dim, the music always seems appropriate. I came in on a Sunday night with a friend and the place was empty, which was kind of great, because we had wanted to find a place to actually talk sans distractions (shit is heavy in my life right now). The bartender was playing that great album of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong duets, which was kind of amazing (especially as compared to the usual loud stuff heard at bars that makes conversation an exercise in yelling). I ordered an Old Fashioned, which was pretty solid, and then got a Gin + lemon juice martini, which was also solid. I checked out the back patio when I had a cigarette and it looks like it would be a pretty great place during the warmer months. I'll definitely be coming back. read more

Dim lighting, a shuffleboard table, mellow old jazz records, black-and-white photographs of 1930's crime scenes (taken by the bar's namesake) on the walls. The drinks are delicious. I recommend the classic creamy drinks, which I think they do a particularly good job on-- the Brandy Alexander, the Grasshopper, and a few others. I really love this place. The owner Alex is always up for a conversation and is very knowledgeable of the neighborhood, the city and city politics. He makes one of the best martinis I have had an always has an interesting selection of spirits. The atmosphere and vibe are cool - sort of a 1930s neighborhood bar thing.
