Just passably acceptable if you never intend to actually use your boat, and just need a wet…read morestorage. However, the marina's defining characteristic is a gradually building bar right at its entrance. A bar that dries each day on a low tide. Understandably, for an enthusiastic boater, this will put a serious crimp into your ambitions. As well, if you are already on a multi-day trip, the annoyance of having to plan a large segment of your trip around entering the marina very quickly rubs you raw. Secondly, the entrance into the breakwater is very narrow. In any kind of a large swell (which is frequently the case at this location), only the foolhardy contemplate entering. The marina is quite small, accommodating just thirty or so vessels. The marina can only accommodate motor boats less than 45 feet, and with the bar to contend with, sailboats with shoal keels, or lengths less than 35 feet. There is electricity and water, but no toilet facilities. Extremely limited garbage service, and the owner prohibits liveaboards. No pumping facilities, and discharging your toilet into the water is prohibited. There is no boatyard, and large scale boat repairs are not permitted. Fuel is available in Wilson Creek, which is a short walk from the marina. The next closest fuel barge is at the Secret Cove Marina in Halfmoon Bay. The marina is a part of the Stalashen condominium community, so the entrance to Port Stalashen is gated. The marina and condominiums are on native land, with another ten years remaining on the lease. There are a few dedicated slips for transients, with an honour box system. Most of the people there are exceptionally kind, but as anywhere else's, there are a few troublemakers there who delight in stirring the shit. Lastly, in a SW blow, all the boats get knocked around quite badly. Ultimately, this is a marina to use as a last resort only. For transients, there is a shopping mall with an IGA close at hand, and a Canadian Tire within walking distance too. For all other boaters, Port Stalashen is not a long term solution.

A proper diagnosis had eluded us for years and we had spent a lot of money with other marine mechanics who were quick to change out parts without fixing the underlying problem. Simon had actually come on our boat to fix the transmission. He found and installed a new (used) transmission and was able to get us on the way during the height of boating season. The added bonus was that he was able to tell us why our engine was not coming up to full rpms. His professionalism, answering his phone and returning calls to our messages quickly, really showed that he cares. We certainly will return to Comox and have Simon work on our boat for engine and system-related services

We took the outboard in first thing on Monday, after a call to them on Saturday, and they looked at it first thing, and repaired it within an hour! A happy resolution to allow us to continue on our trip. The owner also showed us some winter maintenance techniques, not in the manual, to hopefully avoid future problems, even though it had received meticulous care, which didn't include the secret steps to insure it would function well come spring. Beautiful waters here! Short hike, easy access, be prepared to swim…read more PARKING It's a small parking lot, maybe 10 spots, with overflow on the road around it. I've been here in the afternoon on a weekday in July and midday in a weekday in August. Both times we were lucky and one spot was open. Generally there's turnover since it's a short hike and you can get a spot. AMENITIES There is a bathroom at the trailhead, no water. There are tons of educational signage about the wildlife and plants in the area. DIFFICULTY & TIME Short hike, very little elevation change. You can get to the actual Smuggler Cove in about 30-40 minutes with a 4 and a 6 year old in tow (this is right before the loop starts). I've done the entire full lollipop loop in exactly one hour with only adults. SHADE The hike is 95% shaded. RECEPTION I had 5G reception for most of the hike (T-mobile). CROWDS It was busy but not too crowded both times I went. It was more empty when I went in the afternoon (July 2023). There were many more swimmers during my midday visit in August 2024, but still easy to get your own little private small cove to swim in. SWIMMING In August, we went swimming in the cove. It's not tropical, but it's not nearly as cold as other parts of the ocean. Lots of people were swimming, and a lot of people brought inflatable stand up paddleboards or kayaks.
