Located inside the InterContinental, the Wellington Lounge provides a lovely afternoon tea in a well-lighted mid-century modern room. Although my party of 2 arrived early, the IC was able to seat us while we waited for the 1pm tea which gave us time to peruse the menu and decide which tea to choose of which there are many. Fortunately, my helpful and courteous server helped me decide on my first pot of tea: Midnight Hour Tea - described as decaffeinated black tea delicately blended with fragrant tropical fruits which is PERFECT for me. Additionally, the helpful server suggested to drink the tea without milk (so as not to dilute the flavor, I am sure). Once the tea is chosen, the rest of the choices are simple. Do you want unlimited Veuve Cliquot with your tea and do you want vegetarian. For me, no on the champagne and yes, on meat. Let the fun begin! Here's what I was served: Hand Crafted Sandwiches: Smoked Salmon, Caviar & Crème Fraîche Sandwich on malted bread (my favorite) Coronation Chicken, Coriander & Lime Sandwich on turmeric bread Celeriac & Parsnip Remoulade Sandwich on tomato bread Truffle Egg Mayo & Chives Sandwich on white bread Duck Confit & Herb Whipped Cream Sandwich on wholemeal bread Scones & Cakes: Freshly Baked Plain & Golden Raisin Scones served with: Winter Berry Conserve, Strawberry & Vanilla Jam, and Cornish Clotted Cream Earl Grey & Orange Marmalade Dome The Queen's Favourite (and mine, too) - Chocolate Biscuit Cake Vanilla, Blackberry & Lemon Thyme Hat Classic Victoria Sponge Cake And because I was celebrating my birthday, I was given an additional treat of a brownie with a candle presented festively on a plate. For my second pot of tea, I was given a Moroccan Mint while my partner chose an Orange Blossom Oolong which was fragrant and ideal if you wanted to add milk. I wish I had chosen the latter. FYI, the IC does not sell loose leaf or tea bags. Our tea was made special by our attentive and helpful server and a sociable couple from Malaysia sitting adjacent to us who was also celebrating a birthday. As guests, we were not rushed and were able to spend time conversing with the couple next to us. While having afternoon tea is ALWAYS a treat, booking through afternoontea.co.uk cuts the £85/person bill in half! Afternoon tea here is an experience. For those that haven't had it, I highly recommend trying it once, it's a fun experience. The lounge is on the ground floor of the Intercontinental Hotel and their afternoon tea is most definitely a highlight of our London trip. Their tea selection is formidable but the best was the house royal breakfast tea. It was pretty amazing with sugar and milk. The tea service itself also has some excellent food. Their sandwiches were all delicious with the best being the haddock on charcoal bread and chicken on turmeric bread. Scones here are also really tasty and fresh. Fondue was also good and the cakes were also beautiful although a bit one note. Service here is as you would expect, unparalleled. Prices were fair for afternoon tea at posh places. Expect to invest about 2 hours and enjoy the experience. Thumbs up. read more

Posh. The word for uber stylish, & former moniker for Victoria Beckham when she was a Spice Girl. This place, is posh. In London just for the day en route to Italy, we really needed some afternoon tea. I'm so glad we found this place. Two pots of delicious tea, & appropriate nibbles to go with it. Croquets w English peas? How frickin British is that? And, there's a piano. A pianist played beautiful music for us. LOVE. The light in this space is fabulous. I'm sure it's a sweet spot after dark, but make sure to do an afternoon stop if you can. Just so lovely. Service was first rate, too. They were extremely accommodating with our suitcases. Recently tried Wellington Lounge's gorgeous "Scents of Summer" Afternoon Tea (running until September) - a delicious, glorious, and quirky take on the traditional tea, with a shot of wheatgrass jelly to begin (yes, you read that correctly!). Sandwiches were served as "scrolls" (bread neatly rolled over the filling) and the pickled-cucumber sandwiches were a true delight. The scones were anything but "normal": served with traditional wild strawberry jam and clotted cream, we also had the option of trying the lemon curd with pink peppercorns (strangely addictive!) and Earl Grey butter, which tasted much like ... normal butter. But the piece de resistance came in the form of the cakes, which resembled a beautiful spring garden: the peach melba was encased in a ball of meringue that looked impressively like a peach, and accompanied by edible rocks (!) and lots of other beautiful treats. I especially loved the delicately flavored jasmine tea-cake, which worked really well with the peony and rosebud tea we selected. For me, afternoon tea isn't just about eating and drinking. It's an entire sensory experience, in which I get to relax and socialize with my friends while enjoying seasonal delicacies and the finest choices in British tea. Thanks to the magnificent collaboration of Executive Chef Ashley Wells and Edward Bodenham of Floris London, the Scents of Summer Afternoon Tea at the InterContinental Park Lane was exactly what afternoon tea should be. Since I love to smell everything before I taste it, I have to admit the combination of distinct flavors infused with natural, herbal scents excited me. I was surprised at how much care was put into how the courses of the Scents of Summer Afternoon Tea were served. We were served a selection of small sandwiches, starting with smoked salmon and bergamot cream cheese in a lemon bread, which was hearty but subtle in flavor, and ending with a strong honey-roasted pumpkin on spinach bread, crumbled with rich and creamy feta cheese. This one was my favorite. After the savory dishes, the sweet scents of summer wafted through, in the form of deliciously decadent desserts. I loved the light flavor of the Jasmine tea cake, and thought it paired nicely with a warm cup of tea. One of my friends was partial to the grapefruit tart and violet cream, as she said the citrus flavor balanced the floral exceptionally. The tea service was delightful, and this is more than just tea and cookies. This truly is a journey, both culinary and fragrant. Between each course, we were served a form of palate cleanser, which made enjoying the next flavor even more intense. The atmosphere of the Wellington Lounge makes the whole experience regal and relaxing. Had a lovely afternoon tea here with my wife during our honeymoon in Europe and the UK. The prices are quite high, but comparable to other high teas in London. We got the Royal tea and loved the vanilla and cardamom-infused champagne! The sandwiches were well-executed and standard for high tea, though nothing was truly worth writing home about. The desserts, though, were magical. We very much enjoyed the Eton mess shortbread and the oven-fresh scones. The staff was friendly and brought us a surprise cake at the end to celebrate our marriage, though I found it hard to get service while we were enjoying the tea itself. The lounge seemed a bit understaffed and it was hard to get someone's attention when we wanted a tea refill or needed something. read more

Went for dinner as part of a party. A strange mix. Very hard to buy off currently. Had to go there to make the event work, and met the Maitre 'd who was very helpful and in the end made it happen. Food was pretty much as good as expected, some dishes were outstanding. Wines (they chose) were ok for the price. Perhaps if we'd had loadsa money it might have been better. I have gone on record to say that the River Cafe is vastly overrated and LAnima is my current favourite Italian in London. Well Theo Randall now has his own canvas to paint on free from Rosie and Ruthie ! I had a very good meal here last night as a guest of Subterranean. We both started with the capelletti stuffed with slow roasted veal which was good to the standard found in an average restaurant in say Parma but nowhere near the delights of the Sorelle Picchi in that same fiar city or even an excellent Tortelli stuffed with osso buco a la Milanese that I onCe had a Locanda Locatelli full of flavour, a juicy runny meat and sauce stuffing. My host had what he desribed as a superb grilled calves liver and I had a truly outstanding Vela Chop topped with porcini and slasa verde. We shared some fried Zucchini that were good but not as good as those at L'Anima. We both finished with a truly superb selection of deserts to share - homemade vanila ice cream , pana cotta , lemon tart and chocolate cake - all were really outstanding. We drank a bottle of Frans Hass Pinot Grigio form Alto Adige and ended with a glass of Sweet Asti. Perhaps because the retaurantis in a major international hotel it tries to please people with eclectic tastes hence some great Italian wines are conspicous by their absence eg. Passito di Pantelleria one of the worlds top dessert wines. L'Anima remains my favourite Italian in London ! read more

Yesterday we've had quite a disappointing first time in Theo Randall at the Intercontinental which was very unexpected since the service and the attitude of the Hotel staff is always super friendly and helpful which I cannot say about the restaurant staff. Maitre d' was shockingly useless, extremely slow and too familiar. Waitresses (some of them) hardly spoke English, which made the process even slower since they had to always "go and look" for someone who speaks the language. It's definitely unexpected when you are in a 5* Hotel in Central London. Food. Most of the food was overly salty and spinach had an aftertaste of some sort of washing liquid. To be honest, It was a bad dinner especially when one is prepared for "the best" after reading all the wonderful reviews but end up with bad experience and mannerless people trying to run the place pretending they know what luxury is. An afternoon tea how it should be! Several different settings one can choose from, multiple different teas, a nice modern but classy ambiente and good service. All in all a nice afternoon spent in the fancy Interconti Hotel. Really nothing to complain; Wellington blend tea was delicious, sandwiches were ok but nothing too special (28£ version), scones were brought warm and all the pastries with Sachertorte... very tasty! read more

I am not a great fan of hotel restaurants as they tend to lack atmosphere and be a bit stiff. Still, I was overjoyed when I was invited to celebrate a friend's birthday party here. OK, the location isn't great in that the Interconti inhabits quite an ugly building which you enter from a dark back alley. We were booked into the private dining room which is located to the side of the main restaurant. Its location just below street level cleverly disguised by rather small windows which allow but a glimpse of the cars and feet going past. We had the most delicious meal with the choice of dishes selected by our host beforehand. Following some lovely bruscetta and focaccia appetisers most guests had the famous veal-stuffed cappelletti while I started with the most delicious arrangement of buffalo mozarella, peppers and spinach. As a recovering vegetarian I was persuaded to make a meaty exception for the rack of lamb which was served with a beautifully presented selection of unusual vegetables. Everything was cooked beautifully and very tasty. As this was a special occasion the cake came decorated with candles . It turned out to be the most amazing, fluffy chocolate dream. It was also rather rich and most of us struggled to finish it. Service was varied with some staff more attentive than others (not quite 5-star silver service which is what I would have expected given the location). Unfortunately, our question as to which wines they had been serving us all night went unanswered. Still, this feels like picking at small faults when the evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all and I would definitely recommend Theo Randall for a special occasion. read more

I am a great fan of Theo Randall. He is the former head chef of the River Café and now he continues his passion for cooking in The Intercontinental Hotel in Park Lane. His food is exquisite, delicate and simply delicious. Expect to pay about £60 per person. Alright, there seems to be a lot of hype around this place and Theo Randall's infamous restaurant. To be honest I was not that impressed. The food is good but not amazing, the setting is nice but not impressive and the overall the price is a bit too much for what you get. The restaurant does give very big portions, but then you end up with a full stomach- which is just that- we could barely walk but we did not feel satisfied but the taste. It was almost like eating a loaf of bread Then drinking a glass of water, then having pasta and butter and finishing with an ice cube for dessert. Full, but not happy. Overall, yes this is probably a place where I would go again, maybe bring some clients along or go with some friends. We had a great afternoon tea at Wellington Lounge. The service was excellent. The food was delicious (sandwiches not special but ok). A number of great selection of tea was also included. We ordered the afternoon tea for 28£. The atmosphere was modern! The chairs were really comfortable so we were ending up sitting there almost 2 1/2 h.
