MY STORY: I am an attorney (top of my AM25 law school class, editor of Law Review and worked at one of the largest corporate law firms in the world.) I want ZERO STARS When I inquired with Meryl Wenig about my landlord situation, she all but assured me that she could win, reciting oversimplified versions of the pertinent laws and bragging about her experience and track record. I made very clear my hesitation to accept that confidence, and she reassured me repeatedly. After several days of this, I hired them. The case was complex but the fraud by my landlords was clear: they had exempted the building from rent stability on fraudulent grounds (saying it had 5 units when it has 6), their inspection forms were signed by a DOB agent whose license was expired, they changed their rationale for deregulating the apartment three times during the case, and plenty more. They even evicted us and we got back in. So I really thought Ms. Wenig may be right that we could win this. And I'm sure we could have, if her actions had reflected her words. But they didn't. SEVERELY. The next three years were a comedy of errors. Everything Ms. Wenig initially said she would do, never got done. My extremely complicated case was passed to three different associates without briefing them on the details, many urgent emails were never answered. Ms. Wenig was unavailable from jury duty and family emergencies at two of the most critical moments in the case. At one of these, she had her partner Jeff Saltiel meet with me, with absolutely ZERO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF THE CASE. This meeting served only to seal my doom. Also earlier, when it took its biggest turn for the worse (a money judgment was issued against me), the current associate advised me to pay $15K to show good faith--and the landlords issued a motion to strike down anything I offered, because it was less than the judgment was for; so that was $15K wasted. The list goes on and on. Just before I officially lost the case, I had to appear in court simply to fire them, but the judge that day was unable to hear court cases from Wenig Saltiel, so this required a second court appearance by them, a second charge of $350 to me although it was no fault of mine and I was desperately losing the case. So it cost me $700 simply to fire them. Ultimately I lost the case miserably, with a $60K judgment against me. Using photo evidence that they had lied about fixing a leak which they had ignored for two years (clear evidence of retaliatory negligence), I strong-armed my landlords into settling for only $5K--WITHOUT THE HELP OF WENIG SALTIEL. AFTER THIS HAD HAPPENED and I was all but financially ruined, Wenig Saltiel aggressively pursued me by telephone for the final $7K. They essentially bullied me so much that I needed a new lawyer to help navigate this. He advised me to list all the events which I felt illustrated their incompetence. After I sent it, the firm settled for half the amount I owed them, without a single word admitting any wrongdoing, nor any further communication. In short, DO NOT HIRE THIS FIRM--THEY ARE ONLY IN IT FOR THEMSELVES, and seem to be staunchly against responsibility, accountability, or consistency.
