This is the worst college radio station in America, which is nuts because 30 years ago it was among the best. College radio is widely understood as the freeform radio vanguard, where one can hear musical offerings unavailable on commercial radio. When I tune into a college station, I don't want to hear a single song I know. 99% of what WERS plays nowadays is Top 40 "alternative" music from the 80s and 90s. Stuff I've been sick of for decades. Honk shoo. It's a college station masquerading as a commercial station masquerading as a twenty year-old iPod. If you are a retailer looking for the most unchallenging background noise for your shoppers to ignore, or perhaps a listener looking for a radio station to convince you that not only has there been no good music made in the past 35 years, but also that maybe music was just never good, WERS is it. read more

Ok, I've only recently started tuning into this station, but it seems pretty fresh. Every time I tune in there is something different. Reggae, A Capella, Hip Hop, etc. I like it. I'm biased as well since I currently work at WERS, so I hope no one minds if I post some info about it since a few people aren't sure of the programming, the setup or the schedule (you can also visit WERS.org for most info including playlists and exclusive interviews with our artists). WERS is run by Emerson College students, but is professionally managed (they pay real adults to keep an eye on things, but they tend to be alumni). It's nonprofit and supported by membership, and there are no commercials. One thing that makes it special is its live recording studio, where local and national artists stop in, sometimes between a sound check and a concert, to have a chat with the DJ and lay down some tracks, which are mixed and produced by Emerson students. All of our shows, even the children's music and a capella shows, have caches of recordings from their respective artists. Right now WERS caters to the schedules of its listeners, so in the morning, there's Coffeehouse, which plays folk and singer/songwriter music like Bob Dylan, Ani DiFranco and Belle & Sebastian; they also play local and indie up-and-comers, so it's a great way to check out performers you might be able to see at Passim or the Paradise. After 10 it rolls on to the Jazz Oasis, so you can play it during work without having to suffer through Amy Grant or A Flock of Seagulls (unless you want to), followed by Gyroscope, which is world music (although it depends on the DJ, this show also tends to be groovy and ambient). By the afternoon when you're heading home, there's Rockers, our reggae show, so you can chill out from 4-8 (mon). Evenings 8-11 it's always hip-hop, and both VanStylez of 88.9@ night (weekdays) and Jasmine Solano, creator and host of the Secret Spot (weekends) have recently been nominated for city-wide awards that have placed them in competition with commercial radio stations. After 11 things get a little wild with Revolutions (techno; weekdays), Radiobeat (hardcore; Saturdays), and the Left End (indie rock; Sundays); these may have been designed for those whose parents NEVER wondered where they were at 11. That means you, Mr. and Ms. Angry Youth, so go ahead--bang your head. When you're all good and tuckered out, you can listen to Uncommon Rotation until 6 a.m., which is a kind of best-of showcase of the staff's favorite tracks of the moment. Sunday we give a nod to spirituality and family (something the Clear Channel may eliminate in 30 or so years, so enjoy it while it lasts). Chagigah features Jewish music, followed by Christian gospel; the afternoon is devoted to showtunes (Standing Room Only), surprisingly addictive a capella, and the Playground, one of the only children's programs in New England. I also want to clear something up: if you think you're the only one whose guilty pleasure is our a capella show, think again: we've had members pledge money to the show from as far away as Hawaii, and people stream it on iTunes. So basically, whether you're an overacheiver headed to the Financial District at 6:01 a.m. or a raver laying awake on the couch at 3 a.m., we've got you covered. read more

Pour your coffee/tea/sheep's blood and just try to shake that awestruck, childlike grin you get from hearing the MIT Logarhythms belt out Feel Good Inc. sans instrumentation. Go ahead, you can't. WERS is... okay. Nice. Good? I've edited this review three or four times because I know it's a college station, and I didn't want to offend anyone, and I'm sure they're doing their best and probably having fun, and who am I to ruin anyone's fun. However, I can say with certainty that when a professional, smooth-jazz-sounding lady announcer is hired to tell you that what you're listening to is "Music--for the independent mind," be suspicious. Independent minds rarely need to be notified. 12/01/06: This is the only entity in my history of Yelp-reviewership that I actually have to downgrade. Even since I've been listening to WERS (only at work-- and only because we don't get reception for MIT radio), it's gotten worse. At least three times a day they play a song with the title--I sh*t you not-- "You Can't See The Stars From the Inside of a Bar." The song is the most bland, gross, boring, sing-songy, soggy, faux-meaningful neu-country I've ever heard. Even CMT wouldn't play this crap (well, actually, they would, which is exactly the problem)! True enough, totally stank dung like "You Can't..." is interspersed with gems from artists I love like Sufjan Stevens and Cat Power, but good lord, it's really almost not worth it.... This is my favorite radio station ever because I get to satisfy my secret lust for a capella music Saturdays AND Sundays from 2-5 pm (11-2 PST) via iTunes radio. Wait, did I say a capella? That was a slip of the tongue. I totally meant to say something cooler than that. Like the hip-hop show. I have listened to the hip-hop show in the past. Absolutely. What the heck happened to this station?! For years - YEARS! - it wasn't just the best station in Boston, it was arguably the best music station in the world (and I've been an avid radio listener in the Americas, Europe and Africa). But lately about half its schedule is just...lame. The night-time and weekend shows are still there, and mostly still up to the old standards (which earns them the only two stars they get from me), but the weekdays stink nowadays. WERS used to split their weekday schedule into several shows - a morning folk-ish show focusing on strong songwriting, a mid-day jazz show that was often funky and rarely coy, and an international music show in the afternoons that was second to none. Each day's DJ brought a lot of personality to their mix, often pulling in new stuff from all over the world and rarely over-thinking things. Then last year it sounded like the individual DJs lost their ability to program their own shows and you began hearing the same things several times during the week - often stuff from established labels too - less and less of the true independents. Now just very recently, they've entirely done away with the weekday shows and made the whole day into one inconsistent mush of year-old 'soft alt', 70s era folk rock and substandard folk-emo garbage. It's like a bad version of the morning show has taken over the whole day. I feel like I'm stuck in the dorm room of some 'sensitive' freshman from the suburbs. To add insult to injury, they've also gotten rid of all the great station IDs and replaced them with an anonymous female voice of the sort one hears on automated voice mail systems. It's getting harder and harder to care about this once great station. There's still flashes of the old WERS, but unless they get back to taking chances and trusting their DJs - and that means playing something other than music by skinny white Americans - I think they are going to lose a major share of their audience. One thing's for sure, they won't get another penny from me unless things change for the better (I've been a member for most of the 22 years I've been in Boston - but not this year!) Feh. read more

Since moving back to the Boston area, I've re-connected with WERS. While your station is decent independent radio, I found that I was spoiled back in Denver by Boulder-based Radio 1190 (KCUV). I urge you to check out (radio1190.org - KCUV) their playlist and explore more of the independent and 'edgier' tunes you'll find on there. WERS' daytime sound is too sanitized and mainstream; it's not getting out there. The weekends, I find, are particularly disappointing. A cappella's alright, but two days in a row?? And two solid hours of Reggae five nights a week on a "college" station in primetime? Oi. I'm not saying everything's wrong with ERS. But there's too much Norah Jones, Grateful Dead, Elvis Costello, U2, Stones, Beatles, Pearl Jam other bands that you can hear anywhere else on the dial. These decidedly commercial offerings obscure rather than uplift independent notes like Devotchka or Neko Case. Too much relegating hip-hop to the wee hours of the night (god forbid we listened to beats while commuting) and not enough punk, post-punk, garage, and other dirty off-beat rock & roll. WERS is better than 99% of the commercial crap on the FM dial. But it's not doing nearly enough to promote local bands or get independent sounds on the airwaves. read more

Great local college radio station. Been around for decades playing an amazingly diverse line up.

Once upon a time, WERS was an innovative radio station that had programs-- you could tune in at a set time and actually hear a particular kind of music. In fact, I would divide my day accordingly: there was folk/acoustic-rock in the morning (that was Coffeehouse), there was jazz in the afternoon, there was world music in the late afternoon, and there was some other stuff I didn't listen to at nights. I can honestly say that there were many mornings I would set my alarm clock so that I could hear someone-- Rose Polenzani, Ellis Paul, etc. -- play Coffeehouse. Then, a short while ago, the programs were wiped away (at least on weekdays) and the station became one big blur. The saddest part to me about the death of the program is that you never, ever hear jazz or world on WERS anymore. You don't even hear the interesting, indie, local folk-ish music anymore. instead, "daytime programming" (as they call it) is one big blur of Death Cab, David Gray, and Regina Spektor. It's not that I don't like Death Cab, David Gray, and Regina Spektor -- they are absolutely fine (though I think WERS really has lost its commitment to playing lesser-known artists). It's that I don't want to hear them all day, every day. The irony, the real irony, is that all of this homogenization happened under their new motto "music for the independent mind." I can't help but think that this new version of WERS feels a lot less, well, independent, than the older version. There are two saving graces, two things to be happy about: 1) Secret Spot lives on. Secret Spot is the only reason I continue to tune into WERS. Sat and Sun nights- R&B and classic soul. Where else can you hear Issac Hayes, The Pointer Sisters, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and Al Green *commercial free*?! 2) They are really good about updating their playlists. You will never have to wonder what that really cool song you just heard was. If you wait 5 minutes, you can find out online. read more

As with a lot of people, my mp3 player is my main music channel these days. But when I'm in the mood for good ol' radio, WERS, Emerson's student-driven radio station, is one of Boston's best. I tune in regularly for the Reggae, Coffeehouse and Jazz segments (and fine, I'll admit it - I even catch their A Capella program once in awhile). Bottom line: WERS offers great programming, music you don't hear on other stations, and best of all - no commercials! read more

Sometimes I think, "Where would I be without WERS?" and then I realize - I'd be sick of my Ipod and would have an even greater hatred for all the greedy, boring, and unoriginal radio stations in Boston. I first tuned in because several years ago it was REALLY folky, and easy to wake up to. Eventually things improved to more alternative tunes, and I listened more on my commute, since there is NO TALK in the morning, save the news. And ooooh boy, does talk radio make me want to tear the head unit out of my car and leave it on the side of the road. God dammit, who on EARTH wants to listen to people forcibly laughing hysterically all morning (proven recipe at end of review)? Anyway, WERS has gone through many changes over the past several years. Today, they've really shaped up into an amazing station - playing a ton of new music, alot of recent music, tones of local and independant artists, and occasionally they slip in some old stuff that.. I don't , but alot of people probably like. Thankfully, gone are the days where Neil Young (my audible nemisis) was played everytime I turned on the radio. The news and traffic, every half hour during commuting times, is relevant, quick, and to the point. No BS, and they always mention MBTA status (which is seemingly more accurate than what the MBTA itself reports online). The daytime radio is great, and occasionally I'll dig Rockers, the reggae slice at dinner time. After that is real hip-hop, but that's TV time, not radio time. And to those who complain about the twice annual fund raiser.. are you nuts? Have you noticed there are no commercials? Just the occasional support/underwriting from a company. Independant radio! Its a phenomenal idea. By them raising money from the listeners, they are not reliant on the music industry or any other stupidity for funding. Sure, its not what you want to hear at 6am, but if they don't get this money, they cannot transmit the signal or keep their equipment running. Its life. Ever see a fundraiser on PBS? Same thing. Oh - and their online streaming? TOP NOTCH. Hard to find such a quality stream! Again a result of contributions. Here's the recipe WERS does not follow (thank goodness): 1 or 2 idiotic, loudmouthed jackasses 1 dumbass female who's job is to laugh alot 1 occasional news person who attempts to chime in to the rest of the idiotic banter. 1 pinch of music, which you heard last hour - and you'll hear in the next hour 6 heaping piles of ripe, stinking, awful, and irritating commecials ** stir all the above together early in the morning. Good college radio. There is plenty of variety. There are shows that I love, shows that i loathe, shows that I listen to despite my embarassment (the hour of show tunes on the weekend). But that's what makes college radio great. Sounds like they actually let the students run the show as they please, which is not the case with all college radio, sadly. It may not always work, but it's what, I think, is supposed to happen when students are given freedom with their radio station. read more

If you believe this radio station is run by students, you're not paying attention. The morning DJ is certainly a professional. The playlist is stale and they play many of the same songs over and over again. Some songs are from their playlists of close to ten years ago. I suppose, since Emerson is a school that specializes in entertainment and communications, the programmers at WERS are teaching the students that this is how radio works these days. Gone are the days of "play what you want." There is a definite playlist scenario at work at WERS and my goodness, it's gotten boring and predictable. And yes, WERS plays "newer" artists like Angel Olsen, Lucy Dacus, Phoebe Bridgers, Band of Horses, The War on Drugs. The songs they play are always the "single" from any album. Rarely do they get into deeper album cuts. If you hear a Talking Heads or Smiths song, it will be one of maybe three or four songs they play all the time. NO! Not Rock the Casbah again! This is the essence of the playlist format. WERS has become the WZLX of indie music. WZLX plays the same songs by the same bands at the same time every day. We had it on at work the other day and a co-worker mentioned a song they had just played and I said, "Watch. After this commercial, they will play either Tainted Love or Centerfold." And BANG, they played them back to back! We need a consensus at work for what we play on the radio and WERS is often chosen because most people don't want to be challenged by new music. If you want a REAL COLLEGE RADIO STATION, playing a truly eclectic mix of new and sometimes older music, tune into WZBC 90.3. I've heard the DJs gush over new indie music they like and also marvel at older, unusual tracks they have newly discovered. I leave Shazam open on my phone to find out the names and artists they play because there's so much new music on WZBC. OK, so not to completely rank on the station, the music they play is still better than any other commercial station in the area. But I do not consider it a "college" station like WZBC and WMBR. read more

I was a DJ here for one month over Christmas vacation in grad school. I got the inside scoop, yo. This station is competely professional and well put together. The people that work for WERS know music and are passionate about it. Check out the A-capella show on the weekends. Put the station on while you work at your office. Hardly any commercials, pleasant DJ's, and news on the hour in the evenings. Recently, I won tickets to a kick-ass concert event at the Museum of Science Planetarium - Juliana Hatfield and Sarah Borges. The same day there was a live on-air performance by Bon Iver (soooo good). Despite my love and fuzzy feelings for WERS, I called in with a complaint last week. One of their DJ's, a woman with a British accent, none the less, said David Bowie's name wrong. Twice. She pronounced it "BOW-ee," bow like bow-wow-wow says the doggie. I found that to be inexusable, but then, that may just be me. read more

WERS used to be a great station. They had a bunch of diverse and cool shows like the Coffee House, Gyroscope, Revolutions and Jazz Oasis. Then they decided to change things and have a "play everything" format....which really means, no more good folk, no more good jazz, and very little good electronic music. As Ipod-emulation formatting of FM stations continues to sweep the nation, it is up to quality, unconventional stations like WERS to hold the line. It really doesn't matter what the "random" songs in a random play list are, your new "music for the independent mind" proclamation smacks of desperation. Instead of "joining the pack" of misguided, impulsive commercial radio stations, WERS should continue to bring strong, sensible, quality shows to the airwaves. WERS lost its edge and has become one step better than commercial radio....which is SAD considering how great it once was. Boston radio lost a shining beacon at the front of the dial - and I don't see it changing any time soon. read more

Very good radio, but the random (and weird and unwelcome) motown blues and neo-country requires a 1 star deduction. It also makes me cry every day when they start playing reggae at 7:00p. The only real radio station in Boston Mon thru Fri. I can listen to it for hours without ever getting the urge to grab the radio, pick it up and whip it against the wall. I can do without some of the weekend programming though, I'm not much of a Broadway/Accapella guy but The Playground is a riot. read more

During work instead of listing to the hundreds of songs on my iPod, I frequently tune into WERS. WERS updated their format a few months ago so the Coffeehouse is all day long during the week. Yeahhh alt rock, folk, alt country, reggae mezcla! Yes, they do repeat songs a lot (despite their eclectic mix). But I'd rather listen to Mave or St Vincent three times a day than that stupid "It's Closing Time" song even one more time. The DJs: Occasionally awkward, usually adorable. Some are better than others. Every once in awhile they make some really funny mistakes (the "p" is silent in coup, news reader!). I'm not a HUGE fan of the news recaps. If I wanted news, I would be listening to WBUR. WERS also frequently host artists in studio. The live music is pretty cool, and listening to the night owl musicians try to assemble coherent sentences in the morning can be entertaining. As far as the rest of their schedule: I do love Rockers (7 PM to 9PM weekdays.. I think). Evening reggae can't be beat - the boyfriend and I roll through Brighton in my Mazda3 hatchback with the bass booming and reggae popping while the college students look on, wondering who over the age of 21 dare make noise on their streets. The weekend is unpredictable - I can't keep track of the schedule - but the a cappella show is great. If you're an independent music fan and haven't tried WERS, tune in. You might be pleasantly surprised slash inspired to rock on. read more

WERS is a fantastic college radio station. So much better than my university's (sorry!). However, I've learned that it is a lot better to listen to for short stints as the music tends to repeat every couple hours or so (but doesn't every radio station repeat? not holding this against them). Every now and then they play an absolutely awesome song and then never play it again. But at least they played it once - right? The live sessions are amazing as well as the informative tidbits about the bands. The best part is no commercials and a limited amount of talk. Overall, I'm very pleased with this radio station and switch between it and my iPod while at work. My only reason for four stars, not five, is that their online request form doesn't work. I always get a bounceback as "undeliverable" and since I can't call in from work, I can never request. read more

Best radio station I've ever heard. I have no idea what the name of the program is in the morning but you'll hear everything from Wilco to Bob Marley to that song from the Geico commercial. Once the afternoon segements are done things are awesome for the rest of the night....firsts you got ROCKERS which is nothing but reggae (ska, dub, dancehall, rocksteady, roots.....) then it's 88.9 @ Night which plays a lot of "golden era" hip hop and new joints that you won't hear on JAMN...they even toss in a good local jam every now and again. And as for the Dylan and the Eagles tracks, I am talking B-sides baby, yes you get the occasional mainstream hit, but over all they flip it. You find me that station, and make sure it has NO COMMERCIALS, and traffic, weather, and news updates on an hour/ half hour basis; and maybe, MAYBE I will think about changing the dial. Kinda torn. So while I was in college I never listened to WERS even though my roommate and other people I knew worked there. It wasn't until I started working at a place that played WERS daily that I started to really enjoy it. Jazz Oasis and World music really got me through the day. Then.. it got all higglety pigglety! Yeah I said it. Higglety pigglety. They really don't have much format anymore and it kind of sounds like it's on shuffle mode with I-Tunes. They'll go from playing Ulrich Schnauss to Johnny Cash to Regina Spektor... and while I'm sure there is some sort of 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon involved.. it leaves my brain all.. feeling all what? They'll also say things like, "It's a rainy day.. so here's a slow song." Slow song? Slow song? How am I supposed to get through the work day by listening to slowest folkiest song you have? I do like folk.. don't get me wrong.. but c'mon. BUT.. that third star is based on their live sessions. I really do love their in studio performances and the way they help out local artists. This is the only radio station I really listen to. Non top-40 music, no annoying DJ talk in lieu of music, and no commercials = love. Rockers is pretty badass -- a reggae show on weeknights that gets me in a dancing mood. WERS is bomb for having Boston's only Israeli radio show. Chagigah (def. - celebration) is on Sunday mornings from 8 - 11 am). It features a great mix of Israeli music. Early in the show there tends to be some old school Israeli folk music and sometimes some klezmer/Yiddish stuff you can skip unless you're my grandmother. But then 9 - 11 there is some badass modern Israeli music including some new music towards the end of the show. A mix of mizrachi, Israeli hip hop (i'm not kidding) and Israeli pop. The rest of the weekend is always a disappointment -- I will pass on the a cappella, showtunes, and childrens' music. But it's all good, I can tolerate a little bit of FNX, and at night I can listen to Bedtime Magic and the sweet (and by sweet I mean creepy) voice of David Alan Bouchee. read more

If you commuted with me daily you would know this is what's on the radio. If I'm not listening to WERS I'm listening to my iPod. Thats IT. I love the blend of music weekdays - rock, pop, alternative, folk, and country... I frequently hear new stuff which is always nice, and RARELY do I hear the same song in one day (unlike other stations that play the same crap over and over and over). They have no commercials either - which is a huge bonus. How do they do this? By members who sponsor their station (like me). My one beef with them lately - in the last 3-4 weeks they stopped doing 9:30 and 10am news!!! WHY WHY WHY? this is when I'm commuting and I really miss my daily news in the morning! This is one of the only radio stations I listen to in Boston. When I was in college, I had a radio show and in addition to having a good excuse to get high and listen to music for three hours, being a DJ was beneficial because I was constantly exposed to new music. After leaving college, there was definately a period when my music collection stopped growing. WERS has proven to be an excellent resource - especially for rap music. They do a good job of mixing the "bang bang glock to yo forehead" side of rap music with the more concious underground. I do have one complaint. When I first moved to Boston, I thought Rockers was much better - the show played a lot of roots and rocksteady back then. These days, the show plays WAY too much dancehall. read more

Points for the good music, but it's annoying when they spend 10 minutes between songs asking for money. I simply do NOT understand their business model; call it a classic case of NPO inefficiency (are they even a charity? Couldn't even find their profile on charitynavigator or guidestar). They have a powerful tool to advertise for NPOs and mission-driven companies, and make money to cover overhead, and in a tenth of the time that they spent blabbering about how they are poor. Home to Rockers, a bomb set of new dub & roots, real ska and sometimes even dancehall reggae, WERS cracked open my ears and mind, and exposed me to many new artists during my college years. Their programming is eclectic and consistently cool. I am a pretty easy-going listener, so I'm more amused by the idiosyncrasies of the college dj's than annoyed. It seems they know how to use the equipment because I rarely hear any technical mistakes, so what's to complain about? Also, they've got a great strip of sidewalk on Boylston where they have speakers outside; I find myself crossing the street so I can hear snippets of song. read more

ERS is fabulous, esp. for the hip-hop and "standing room only" shows. highly reccomended. they are clearly students deejaying, a bit too much talk for my taste. but overall, worth it. read more

Besides wbur (Boston's npr station), WERS is the best radio station in Boston. I am always surprised how many people don't know how great WERS is! Combine jazz in the morning, world beat in the afternoon, reggae around dinner, then great underground hip hop, top it off with some cool electronic beats and you have a great day of music...all on one station...and no commercials?!? How can you not love WERS? Just don't turn it on during the weekends (unless you want to be tortured with a capella and show tunes)! read more

i didnt go to emerson. Back when i was in college, i never listened to my own college radio station, i listened to ers. Later on, my friend was a host of the revolutions show (friday), although he's not as of this fall. this station has a variety of music, instead of listening to the same 3 songs over and over on the commercial stations. and the people who make the shows are really dedicated to them. i think you can find something for everyone here. read more

A totally student run radio station with programs as diverse as children's music to metal to hip-hop to punk. A beautiful studio complete with a live performance room and a sound room right off to the side, WERS is a great place to hear new bands both recorded and live.
