I may be a bit biased siince I know some of the guys who work on the hip hop show, but I really love ERS for their off-beat music selections (nothing mainstream about it!) ONe of my favorite shows is Revolutions that starts at 11pm. Everytime I get out of a bar buzzed, turning this station on totally chills you out - it really is the perfect time to have this show on. I like the acapella and show tune shows as well (I embrace my performance side I guess you could say!) but as someone else mentioned, the childrens show really does want to make you slit your wrists! wers is the only station i listen to the in (greater) boston area. well...ok, wers and npr. so wers is the only MUSIC station i listen to. i love the weekday morning show, though i think the name 'music for the independent mind' is a bit indulgent. the in studio sets are always great and the students involved in all aspects are shockingly professional. i do feel like it's gotten slightly more formulaic in the past few years but i understand that they're expanding (online archives of shows and a range that goes well into NH) and standardization is part of that. i hold no grudge. you can still hear great new, particularly local, artists. my by is always saying 'how'd you hear about them' and the answer is almost always 'wers'. read more

Commercial-free radio from Emerson College. Very eclectic programming and they have a show for almost every type of music. Maybe almost too eclectic as there ususally isn't a programming theme for the blocks of shows like other college stations have. Modern equipment and a great studio where bands play live. Check out Live Music Week; I think it happens twice a year. read more

Love WERS. They play an eclectic mix of music, from present day alternative and indy (Trombone Shorty) to classics (Peter Gabriel, Sting). Saturdays is off beat, with Jewish klezmer music, classic show tunes, and a Capella. Funky college station vibe done professionally. My go to station! read more

I loooove Rockers and 88.9 At Night! But Rockers used to be on for 4 hours (4-8pm); now its only on for 3 hours - from 7 -10pm... WTF is up with that??? I even used to pledge money to ERS, but not anymore after they cut back my favorite program. F that ish! I want more Rockers! PS - the iphone app is awesome since it lets you listen w/o a radio. Wish I could leave 0 stars. This station is so annoying! I would never listen to it except that I live near the station and it comes through my amp as interference. Nothing but annoying stupid shit 24/7. Like Broadway show tunes? Really bad reggae? How about today's top hits sung a capella? How about a song called "salad, yummy, yummy". Enough with the campy irony. It's a shame that this station couldn't be used to showcase interesting local music. And like I said, I would never listen to if their transmitter wasn't across the street from me and the signal didn't come through every electrical appliance. Your days are numbered, WERS, I'm petitioning the FAA to revoke your license. I would shut you off if I could. We get this rebroadcast down here in New Bedford on 96.5 and I loves it. I kinda wish Reggae wasn't on -every- weeknight, but I do appreciate the fact that it's the only station who plays the type of music I dig during the day, and on the weekend I really dig the Playground (shut up!) and the Human Voice show (despite there seems a lack of songs, it's usually the same 4-5 songs I hear on that show all the time). read more

WERS is pretty much the only station that I listen to these days. Not only does it play the most awesomely random songs that I already have on my iTunes, but I hear new songs that I love every week. TREMAAAAAAZING! I could stream WERS all day (and often do)! the Dj's are great, the music has tons of variety, and the website is super helpful keeping up to speed on the music scene in Boston. I love that they often have musicians in town for concerts on their shows to perform live or do interviews...and honestly, the sunday Acapella brings a smile to my face because it is so uniquely Boston. It's totally listener supported so you don't have to listen to the same lame Dunkin Donuts commercial 17hundred times while trying to rock out! I am a big fan or WERS and get a kick out of their college DJ's - I support them during their pledge drives as often as I can to keep the quality up and keep my music coming! read more

Love this station! It has all the music I love without commercials, who doesn't love that? It's also good for all ages. Great variety, with both new and old music, as well as live. Can't beat it. 88.9 has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up just outside Worcester and was able to tune it in as a kid from home. When I moved to Boston 8 years ago I was really excited to hear it clearly without static. I work 65 miles outside the city and my drive home at night goes by a lot faster once 88.9 comes in tune. This is by far the best station in the greater Boston area. If you are looking for the best reggae and hip hop, tune in weekday evenings and nights and you'll be in luck. They broadcast from Emerson College, so there are no commercials. I even listen online when i'm out of town. read more

I really enjoy some of the weekend afternoon music, particularly the a capella show and usually other good stuff in other hours.

Everytime I turn on ers it's reggae. I do think it's a good radio station, but I prefer wmbr (MIT).

I only regularly listen to two stations on the radio: NPR and WERS. I absolutely love college radio that's done with the right format. The stupid UM and FIU stations back home had totally inept DJ's who insisted on playing the same awful songs day in and day out. WERS has the right kind of variety. I especially love the underground and old-school hip hop at night, and the acapella set on saturdays. Last week I heard an acapella version of Jackson 5's I Want You Back that made my whole carload of friends roll down the windows and rock the car in Cambridge traffic. WERS also seems to be the only station that can get away with Wu Tang, at ALL. Commercial radio stations seem to follow different, pop-culturish sort of rules. It's like the FCC tells them, "Hey...only play 12 songs. Ever. You can shuffle them, but you're telling people what type of music to listen to, so make sure you keep it "real". Lots of Pearl Jam. That's hip, right?" WERS gets my patronage, and allllll my stars. read more

More often than not, you hear students complain about the crappy music that is played on the radio. At WERS, the students choose the music so you don't have to listen to the same old crap. The programming schedule is a little funky and you have to tune in at the right time to hear the style you like, but each show is produced by students who care about the genre and know what they are talking about. For music lovers of every taste, this is the best station in Boston. read more

Boston and the world lost a good thing recently when "The Playground" show moved from Saturday and Sunday evenings to Saturday morning and 1 hour on Sunday morning. The programming staff need to rethink their connection to young listeners and listeners who are young at heart. read more

Disappointed that the awesome show "The Gyroscope" that I listened to weekdays from 1997-2005 while living in the Boston area was replaced by less adventurous fare. The thought of being transported to spots all over the world to hear popular (and maybe not so popular) modern music in many languages with a whole range of rhythms was irresistible. Boston radio's daytime programming is definitely lacking something since this program's unfortunate demise. read more

I'm an old person and generally love ERS - except the sunday programing-eeks! a day that is tricky radiowise anyway and the whole day is dreadful Lately playing 'A Little Bit of Everything " too much and there are a few dj's that are awkward to listen to - one has a speech impediment and for a dj that is tricky - same one as on reality tv cable show-" Pregnant in Heels" person. As an Emerson alumna, I am sadly disappointed at the awful state of WERS. Over the past 18 months, I have been driving thru Mass occasionally on weekday afternoons and tuned in 88.9 to check out what was once one of the best non-commercial stations in the country. First, the deejays sound totally untrained vocally, which is comical if you remember what all Emersonians had to suffer through in Voice & Articulation class. Second, they talk too often, mostly to mention song titles & bands they just mentioned 6 minutes ago. Non-commercial radio's greatest gift is long, uninterrupted playlists! Especially in the college arena, students are allowed and expected to expand their deejaying abilities on an higher level, which is obviously not happening in this format. Third, the music programming is simply dreck. It's hard to describe why I couldn't listen for more than 30 minutes. Could it be that the programming has no soul whatsoever? Did someone think ERS needed to replace the lost FNX & BCN? Not necessarily a bad idea, but the playlists show no evidence of anyone's individual taste or even thought process. And someone in Sociology class should do a little study on the boy band to girl band ratio - haven't we gotten past this issue? Just awful. If Emerson is preparing students for commercial radio gigs, this could be accomplished with one short program per week. Please don't ruin the whole format for this narrow purpose. Yes, I know the weekends are better. Good for the programmers to hold on to their reliable & fun & more heartfelt cash cows. Still a great station in a city full of great stations. I am a big fan of The Playground, their kids-only music show from 5-8PM weekends. And not only can you not hear a-capella anywhere else, they also have a show dedicated to show tunes on the weekends. During the week they play a mixed bag of rock etc- stuff you won't hear anywhere else mixed in with what you'll hear on MOR stations. Personally I miss the old daily program lineup: coffee-house type of music in the morning, Jazz Spectrum 10am-2pm everything from Billie Holliday to Ornette Coleman, International music 2-5 (where else could you hear French disco?), Rockers (reggae, not just Marley & Peter Tosh) 5-8 and a killer rap show until midnight-I'm not even a fan of rap but they would spin stuff commercial radio would never touch, reason enough to listen. One thing I go agree on with the last yelper is that the annual beg-a-thons seem to be coming around all-too-often, maybe if they are that hard up for $ they could get a show sponsored by 1 or 2 businesses, after all working in media you do need experience in generating revenue not just generating content. read more
