Speaking as a lifelong West Chester resident. I've been a member of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine for some time, primarily using the West Chester location on Airport Road. While I appreciate the facilities and the overall mission of the Y, I am increasingly frustrated with the inconsistent and arbitrary enforcement of rules in the Wellness Center, which has significantly impacted my experience. The posted Wellness Center Rules clearly state under "Personal Belongings: Please store bags and items in lockers." Recently, however, this guideline has been strictly enforced as a outright ban on gym bags on the floor, with staff citing "safety reasons" (potential tripping hazards). Yet many other rules on the same sign--such as re-racking weights and avoiding dropping them, limiting cardio machine use to 30 minutes during busy times, using headphones for music/videos, and wiping down equipment--are routinely ignored. Unracked weights, dropped barbells, and cluttered equipment create far greater safety risks than a responsibly placed gym bag, but these violations go unaddressed, even during peak hours. Even more concerning is the allowance of independent, non-YMCA-affiliated CrossFit sessions on the wellness floor. This is not a dedicated CrossFit facility, and these high-intensity group workouts frequently involve heavy lifts and dynamic movements that result in dropped weights (directly violating the posted "avoid dropping" rule) and take up large areas of shared space, increasing risks for other members. CrossFit carries well-documented higher injury potential compared to standard individual workouts, yet it appears to be permitted without oversight. This double standard suggests favoritism or other priorities over consistent safety and fairness for all members. Regular gym-goers like myself rely on a gym bag for practical reasons: it keeps essentials organized (clean clothes, towels, water bottles, recovery tools), maintains hygiene by separating sweaty gear, and supports efficient routines for busy schedules. Some members even carry emergency medical items--inhalers, EpiPens, or glucose monitors--for conditions like asthma or diabetes, needing quick access during workouts. Unfortunately, these selective policies and lack of uniform enforcement reflect poorly on management. It feels as though member convenience, fairness, and actual safety take a backseat to arbitrary decisions. This is the primary reason I give the West Chester YMCA low referral ratings and hesitate to recommend it to others. I hope leadership will review these practices to ensure rules are applied consistently and the facility remains a truly positive, safe, and welcoming space for everyone--as the posted sign promises. read more

Patrons leave their personal belongings all over the gym floors, on equipment, etc. It's to the point where I actually tripped over a backpack & said something to the attendant on duty & he said he would "look into it"?! I've voiced my complaint to management about this is a hazard & that's why there are lockers to use, but management brushed it off by saying "yeah, that's not good" but have done nothing about it. As Seniors, we really enjoy our YMCA membership. The only thing we think is unreasonable is to charge $25 per child when we bring our grandchildren on occasion to the outdoor pool. New location of the West Chester Area YMCA... this one has a great pool (two indoor pool areas and a deep diving pool). they do swiming comp. there too... basket ball gym with indoor track too.. weight room and cardio rooms are large and roomy... 5pm - 6pm it's packed... the spinning classes are very good, and peak times are packed... all in all a great gym at a resonable price. read more

Their youth membership is extremely confusing in terms of whether and how many family members can enter the facility with the child. This policy is nowhere to be found online and it appears that different employees have different opinions on this. So when my wife and I wanted to watch my kid's session, some front desk employee just made up policies to not let me in. Good job YMCA. read more

Over priced and not accommodating at all. Charge $100 for two people just to use their gym. Planet Fitness is only $10 and has much more equipment. Only reason I go to the Y is because it is right near my house. Also, everyone that works there can't make a decision. I have two kids under 3 years old and wanted to try the pool for a day before I paid $400 to join. After being on hold for 15 minutes as she asked multiple people for the answer, I was told that it was against policy and I would have to pay $400 to see what it was like. They wouldn't even let me come in for an hour to test out to make sure my kids like it. On top of that, there is never any parking. read more

This is a great YMCA. It offers a variety of classes, has a pool and is clean. I wish it offered more classes at later times and stayed open later on the weekend because that's when I have the energy and time to work out. Also the class schedules seem to be geared toward stay at home moms and senior citizens. For example, they always have classes at 5:15 AM but few past 7PM. Also, sometimes they will close half the pool for people to practice kayaking or to put up a weird floaty bouncy castle. read more

I like all that the YMCA offers to families. It's very family oriented and you provide childcare and great activities for children. The gym equipment is also new/updated and much cleaner than any other gym I've been a member of locally. The employees also keep an eye on members, which is also unlike any other gym. There is also a full sized pool, which is nice for lap swimming. read more

This is by far the nicest Y I've been to. Granted it is new. I love the rec pool for the kids. I've noticed that it is pretty busy now that school is out but you can still enjoy some quality time with your kids there. I also take full advantage of the babysitting that they offer. They are really good with the kids. I enjoy the classes that they have to offer. There is a wide array although I wish that there were more classes being offered for expecting moms or mothers of newborns. I am fortunate enough that I can go during the day, so it is not to busy in the gym. I have been there in the evening though and have found it difficult to find a piece of cardio equipment. In such an instance, I just go walk the indoor track or use weights. read more

First off their rates increase continually (and only sometimes do they let you know about it). I was signed up as a "young adult" or something like that until I turned 24, at which time I was supposed to receive notification that my rate would increase to the normal adult price. I never received this notification, even though my membership rate increased by $15 a month, yet when the price went up by $1 a month for all members I received a letter. When you finally arrive at the gym you'll note there are barely enough parking spots. Snow removal was mediocre at best and many spots STILL have piles of snow in them, despite the fact there is probably less than 6" of snow covering non-treated surfaces at this point. They do nothing to tow cars that are illegally parked, even if legally parked cars are severely parked in. Coming into the building the locker rooms are either packed and/or filthy. I once saw a used "swimmy" diaper on the floor of the women's locker room. I complained about this, cleanliness was good, then less then a month later I saw piles of empty wrappers and old papers all over the floors of the locker room once again (luckily no swimmy diaper that time). I complained again and have yet to hear anything about it, although once again it appears the locker rooms are clean. So you think, finally, I can forget all this, put my things in a locker, and work out? Nope! Most of the electronic lockers are broken so you can leave your things there but cannot lock the door (probably pretty risky!). Much of the exercise equipment is taken, often by children who are too young (by the YMCA's own rules!) to even be in the gym. The Y staff seems willing to remove them, but only when asked, and they only move them to another machine which will most likely inconvenience the next person looking for that type of machine. The mats are packed as well and often I can't find the free weights I want to use as they only have one or two sets of each for the entire facility. To add insult to injury you'll see tours of prospective members go through constantly while working out! This is crazy considering how over-subscribed the gym currently is! Want to go swimming? Forget about it! The indoor pools are often closed for swim meets (that don't even involve members, these are for h.s. teams!) or at least 50% of lap lanes are taken up by lessons/practices! If you submit a complaint to the complaint box, unless it's as minor as changing a TV channel, you'll most likely never see a response to it posted. The two complaints I made were never responded to. The responses I do see are mostly excuses and offer no concrete ways in which the Y will try to improve itself. It's really a shame, the place was great when I joined about 6 mos ago, but now it's over subscribed and is rapidly going downhill. Unless you like paying $60/mo for broken equipment, a lack of parking, a lack of cleanliness, and generally a lack of customer service, I'd avoid it! read more

I absolutely love this Y! Very clean facility, friendly staff, offers great classes, and also extra activities for families outside business hours. I also really appreciate the fundraisers the Y often runs to support various organizations. Extremely family friendly - my son loves the kid center! I love this Y. They are easy to reach, clean, never overcrowded. The staff is friendly. The Montessori preschool was the best choice for my kid. He learned a lot and has a lot of friends. They try out many things like water volleyball on Friday nights or nutrition classes. I like yoga and meditation classes, my kid likes swimming and Korean martial arts classes. Our family, both my wife and I and all our kids, have been using the West Chester YMCA since 1993. We have never been disappointed by the programs offered or by the quality of either the facilities or the instruction. This is one of the best family activity spots in Chester County. I've been a member at this y for 3 years now. I use the gym about 3-4 a week, I also take the Zumba classes there. My son using the daycare facility which is great. I love the y. I live right down the street so it's super convenient. My only really complaint is the pricing, I've read most of the reviews and see people complaining about this as well. I pay $80 for a family membership, any other gym is less than $30 and includes the same stuff. If this is a state facility and funding by the state why is the member ship fee so outrageous? Also, the out door pool is not included in your monthly membership. Every other y is the area it is included. The outdoor pool is $400 for the summer. They do not allow you to buy day passes for the pool either. The only reason I can see paying this is if you're a stay home parent. I am not a stay home parent and wouldn't be at the pool every day. I did the out door pool last year and think I got to go too the pool a total of maybe 6 times. I would say look at other options before joining the y. read more
