No response for literally 5 months. They responded finally and said that was fine. There was an additional charge-we understood that. They did not ask for payment. Now we are there, literally in Oban the day before our tour. We were supposed to get details about the trip emailed to us, including our ferry tickets. Nothing. We went to the store front (after a days drive to get there). It was closed. Now what? We got up early and walked in the rain to go to the shop. The person behind the counter said "oh ya, I know about that one." We had emailed them asking what the status was-again no response. They hadn't sent us the email because we owed them the balance. Could they not have contacted us to share that info? We live in the US, so calling would have been very expensive. We paid the balance and ran to get on the boat. Better communication please! The tour itself was lovely, but it was stressful in the planning stages.

A lot of people miss or forget facilities that are available to them, here there is use of free toilets and there is a bag drop of where you can leave your bags here for an hour or two, only costing £1 per bag, train station charges £3 for one hour for a small locker. You couldn't get staff any nicer here, I've always found them very helpful and polite, the office is ideally located at the sea front where all the shops are, and only a few minutes walk to the ferry terminal. The bus stop for the city link bus to glasgow is right outside.

There's plenty of info out there on how to book, routes, etc, so I won't go into that here. Tips I'll share: 1) book early - don't even think about trying to arrange this the night before. 2) don't do first class - while it's more comfy and usually our type of travel, we booked on one of the cars toward the back. That way you can see and video/snap pics of the front of the train as it goes over the viaduct. Makes you think lightening struck your forehead. 3) sit on the left side - if you're in the car facing to the front of the train, make sure your seat is on the left side. A much better view of the train going over the viaduct. 4) drink a beer or wine - even if it's 9:30 in the morning, which it was for us, have a brewskie...you're on vacation. 5) eat fast in Mallaig - don't spend a lot of time choosing restaurants. Pick a place the night before. When you arrive at Mallaig, run your happy bum to the restaurant you chose, order (and don't even try to get starters first then mains) and eat. You can take pics afterwards. Restaurants there are small, get slammed with each Twain's arrival, plus the local tourists who come by car. Hope this helps!

While in Scotland, one of our top things to do was to see Loch Ness. With a little tooling around…read moreonline, I found Highland Tours, which offers a variety of single and multi-day tours around Scotland. They had a single day (about 12 hours total) bus tour of Loch Ness and the Highlands, which was perfect for us. The bus left from Edinburgh, and left right on time. We traveled through a suburban town and eventually onto a main road that lead us up the eastern highlands. This area was mostly covered with green lands, hills, and sheep. Thousands of sheep. We made a stop in a small town where one could get a drink or snack at the local coffee shop, but unfortunately, being a Sunday, the rest of the town was closed. We continued on our tour, eventually stopping at Loch Ness. Loch Ness was amazing. We had the option of taking a 45 minute cruise on the Loch, which was cold, windy, and amazing. After the cruise, we had plenty of free time to check out the gift shop and have a bite to eat before having to be back on the bus. The tour then proceeded down through the Western Highlands. There, we saw some of the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes. We stopped at an area called Glencoe, which was quite dreary but breathtaking. We had about 15 minutes on the side of the road just to observe and take pictures of the enormous green hills, rocks and waterfalls. Because our group was organized an on time returning to the bus after each stop, our tour guide treated us to a couple of extra stops. We stopped at a moving war memorial, a pretty large gift shop, and another rest stop that offered gift shops and places to eat. Our last stop was in Stirling, where we got out of the bus to observe the William Wallace monument. (Side note, the Wallace monument was the one thing I really wanted to see up close and didn't get to do on my trip. Next time, I'll make it!) The entire bus tour lasted about 12 hours, returning us to Edinburgh in time for a late dinner. It was a great way to see a large portion of Scotland's beautiful landscape in one day, and gave us ideas of where we'd like to re-visit and spend more time when we return. I would recommend this tour group, and would try another one of their one-day tours in the future.

Love the small group size- vans of 8 vs a big tour group. We got to know others on the tour and our guide Karen was excellent. Good variety of walking, driving, history and of course the Highland cows. It was by far the best part of our trip and I wish we had the time to do a multi day tour with the group. Side note I have to say their responsiveness and communication ahead of time was next to none. Allem helped us out when we were running to meet the group a few minutes late (for the meet time not the leave time - they have a fifteen minute window thankfully) and that wouldn't have been as easy had he not texted me the day before to make sure we had all the info.
