Mitzi, my 7 lb. excitable, happy, spunky, Yorkie loves going to the westend vet clinic where the staff cautiously approach her so that she will remain calm during the visit. If not then she will run about wanting to lick and plant kisses on everyone and general become over stimulated. The staff are always engaging, kind and pleased to see and attend to our concerns. Many thanks to Sara , other staff and Dr. Childs for her care. Thank you for the "praises" in my efforts to contain her enthusiastic exuberant social behaviour. ....... it's nice to know that efforts to train are recognized.

NEGATIVE REVIEWS EXPLAINED: I found out that this clinic was taken over by Dr Childs only a few months ago (I think July 2016). People were obviously not happy with the old owner so this clinic has lots of leftover reviews from before. Before I showed up, I called ahead to make sure the old staff was "flushed". Dr Childs personally looks after each client and there is a new cheerful and helpful receptionist at the desk now. The old staff is all gone. My poor Shih Tzu (Chilli) was scratching like crazy for the 6 months or so and it was getting worse and worse. I went to a few other vets and tried all the standard treatments (steroids, antibiotics and anti histamines). Nothing seemed to be working. In desperation, I was going to try soaking Chilli in some DIY antifungal bath. I was told not to do so, because Chill's problem was not fungal and she explained to me that there would be some negative consequences to "sterilizing" my dog. Luckily I visited the vet before attempting this. When I brought my dog in, the doctor was very kind and understanding. Chilli was happy and did not vibrate in fear like she sometimes does if she gets a bad vibe from a place. The doctor quickly educated me on what I need to do. She used to work in a dermatologist place so I knew that she knew what she was talking about. After checking Chilli's medical history and inspecting Chilli's skin and gave me some special meds to feed Chilli for a couple of weeks, while I change her diet. I am happy to report that 48 hours after starting the meds chilli's skin color returned to its normal healthy color and she is enjoying her new kangaroo diet as well. I am pretty paranoid when it comes to my dog, so she could of gouged me badly for all sorts of tests if she wanted to, but she did not do so. The clinic is pretty far from my home, but I have decided to make this my family vet. It is rare to find a compassionate and knowledgeable vet nowadays, so it is worth the drive for me.

Title: 2 Months of Trauma & Negligence - A Nightmare for My Pet and Family…read more I am sharing our story and the attached photos to inform every pet owner in Vancouver. What should have been a standard surgery turned into a two-month ordeal of physical suffering for my dog, Hebeh, and deep emotional distress for my entire family. 1. Medical Issues & Double Surgery: After paying $1,628 for a bite wound surgery, the site turned necrotic (dead tissue). A second veterinarian confirmed that the sutures were applied incorrectly, cutting off blood circulation. Because of this, my dog had to undergo a second surgery at another clinic to fix the issue. I ended up paying twice for a procedure that should have been done correctly the first time. 2. High Costs & Unnecessary Risks: When I returned for a drain removal, the clinic quoted $1,200-$1,500 and suggested general anesthesia. I went elsewhere, and the drain was removed safely without anesthesia for a fraction of the cost. They also charged over $200 for a "consultation" where nothing was done. 3. Lack of Accountability: When I reached out to management for an explanation, they were dismissive and unresponsive, eventually suggesting I file a complaint, and offered no refund. 4. Impact on My Family: Seeing the necrotic tissue on our dog was very upsetting for my 2-year-old child, my elderly mother, and my wife. The experience has caused significant stress for all of us. I am sharing this review so other pet owners can make informed decisions based on our experience.

The little female kitten had aspirated milk when she was suckling to fast from the syringe. Normally a kitten will be able to clear the bit of milk from nose and lungs. But she had not by the 130 am feeding and was gasping for air. I looked for a vet open and after calling three that said they were 24hrs and getting a message I was happy when staff answered at this vets office. We raced down to the vet and they saw us right away. After an exam the Dr. said she needed to be in an oxygen he gave me a quate of 450 for 24 hrs with possible meds of no more then 100.00 before calling for another ok, this included temp checks helping kitten use washroom, feeding every two hrs round the clock care. fluids if needed with extra days at 150 only. We picked her up and she was clean and active, we had been warned there was a 30% chance without the oxygen she could start to bring up more fluid and by 6pm she started to have a bit. As we live very far and it was 6pm we made the mistake of rushing to a closer vet. This emergency animal Hospital took her with a request that she be given same treatment when they only had a hose for oxygen and no closed cage just a regular cage with a heating pad that worked poorly, they used a size 8 tube to feed her while she was cold which was way too big, her throat was budging. we saw in the am what cage she was in she was ice cold covered in mucus with a distended abdomen from needing to pee, so weak she could barly move, the price was 1200.00 and my cat died on the way home. Had I gone back to Atlas my baby would be alive today, instead I went to a closer vet and my poor baby paid with her life. I would like to thank Avalon staff and the Dr who looked after her the first night. Its too bad that not every hospital is as caring and devoted to the well being and care that your office gave our little girl on her first night , but I made a bad call because I didnt want to travel an extra 30 mins in traffic to come back to your kind staff, that one choice cost me my baby, had she come back to your wonderful staff she would be with me today and id have 1200 more dollars and my pet whom I fell in love with we were keeping her.

The initial invoice was over $1,400, but when I said I wanted to leave, they suddenly lowered it to $800 without the 24-hour stay. This felt very unsettling. After paying, my dog had the x-ray and blood test, but the results were not explained clearly. We were sent home with pills. Also, the doctor later called us and said our dog needed to do another test costing over $1,000. Unfortunately, after 5 days, my dog's symptoms returned. We then went to another animal hospital with better reviews. They explained everything much more clearly and requested the records from Atlas. They even redid the x-ray -- and the results were completely different from what Atlas had given us. I had a very disappointing experience at Atlas Animal Hospital. In my opinion, their focus seemed to be more on money than on genuinely caring for pets. I felt that my pet's needs were not prioritized, and instead I was pressured about costs.

I was met with indifference at reception, and shortly after, I witnessed a doctor deliver distressing news about another family's pet in a blunt and incompassionate way in the public waiting area rather than in a private treatment room. That same tone carried directly into my own interaction with Dr. Paulette Stewart. Dr. Stewart presented a broad $2000 estimate and approach that effectively tested "everything" to rule out non-neurological causes. What I needed, and repeatedly asked for, was discernment and clear medical reasoning: which tests were truly indicated based on her specific case, history and symptoms, what each test was actually assessing, and what the realistic likelihood was that certain systems were relevant to seizures. After the initial consult, Dr. Stewart routinely sent other staff members back in to respond to my questions. These were staff members who were not equipped to answer medically informed questions about testing or seizure medications and who could not explain the rationale beyond reiterating the full testing panel. When I asked to speak directly with the doctor so we could make informed decisions, Dr. Stewart told me I had "upset her staff." During a medication explanation, Dr. Stewart advised that a medication was "so your dog doesn't become a vegetable." That language was deeply inappropriate and blatantly tone-deaf during a scary and emotional medical crisis. I also had to push to have preventative seizure medication prescribed and was told I was receiving it "as a favour" because I was being "difficult." For sudden-onset cluster seizures, preventative anticonvulsant therapy is standard interim care, not a favour. Framing it as a favour was both unprofessional and inconsistent with responsible emergency veterinary practice. This experience raises serious concerns about the clinic's ability to provide trauma-informed, compassionate emergency care. People need and deserve compassionate, respectful communication when their animals are experiencing medical emergencies. I left feeling unsettled and deeply concerned about the quality of care being delivered when families are most vulnerable. While this was sadly not my first negative experience at Burrard Animal Hospital, it will be my last.

Two things stood out to me: - Shortly after the dog's arrival at the vet, the vet counselled my friend and her husband to put their dog to sleep, without doing any tests or giving her any time to try to stabilize, despite their dog having gotten through a similar episode previously. The vet kept going on about quality of life, as if my friend were trying to keep her dog alive far too long (it had barely been a couple of hours). - The absolute worst part was that after her dog passed, the vet, on the phone, said that they had taken her paw prints after she had died, and my friend could buy them for $10. First of all, this was done without asking my friend or her husband, without their consent. Second of all, in what world is a veterinary clinic so greedy and opportunistic to spring this on someone who's beloved pet has just died?! My friends spent thousands of dollars in a matter of hours at the clinic, and they still want to charge for the paw prints? I've never come across anything so tasteless in my life. How shameful.

After 9 hours and repeated requests to see someone, I saw the vet. Determined surgery and antibiotics to prevent infection as it was a dog bite. When I arrived to grab my pup with a different vet on site, there were no antibiotics prescribed. I asked 4 times for them as I told them it was a dog bite. The vet refused to speak to me and didn't explain why they are not prescribing antibiotics. The front desk staff just said "there is nothing we can do." Two weeks later, my pup had a massive infection in the ear. My current vet said at times the infection could open the wound. I told them what happened and my vet was shocked my pup didn't receive antibiotics after a dog bite. My puppy went underwent the same surgery again at a different vet. I was shocked that it was half the cost even with prescribed pain meds as well as antibiotics. I contacted the team and their programmer refunded me the money which is appreciated. I emailed the medical director and no apology or acknowledgment of what took place. No accountability. Hiding behind the idea that things are never black and white referencing the use of antibiotics. The challenge here is that the other vet that originally assessed my dog was so clear that my dog really needs antibiotics because of the bacteria that exists in a dog bite. Changing a treatment plan without consultation doesn't sit well with me. I have to say... I know places like this are never malicious... yet what I experienced was extremely frustrating and has put my pup in the same situation which could have been avoided. The picture was taken at the new vet before she underwent the same surgery.
