We stopped here for lunch this weekend. I am glad that we came for lunch because the prices for supper seemed a little unreasonable for the setting and the service. We had TERRIBLE service. The server was kind enough but overwhelmed with the amount of people in the dining area and the "hostess" was probably the rudest one I have met in a long time. She really shouldn't have that job. Our food took forever to come out. However, once it did it was really delicious. We both ordered the bison burger and the combination of Saskatoon BBQ sauce with the Aged chedder and smoked bacon was delicious. The bison was cooked perfectly. It is easy to dry out a bison burger. I normally don't eat chips, but these were really tasty and a good side. Lunch and Brunch is resonably priced, but for the service I got I wouldn't recommend here for dinner. If you are paying 60 dollars for a ribeye with potatoes Or close to 70 for beef tenderloin [????]you should be treated properly by the hostess and your water glass be properly filled. Especially because you are not overlooking the mountains and the interior of the restaurant is bland and unremarkable. Save your dinner money and drive to the mountains where the food, treatment, and atmosphere are worth it. read more

A rare and wonderful find in the middle of nowhere (to us travelers from Los Angeles, California on a road trip from Calgary to Edmonton with a lunchtime stopover in Red Deer, Saskatoon, Alberta). The amazing West Lake Grill is tucked away in a provincial park and wildlife preserve-- they have an in-house bread-maker and dessert chef / baker and each dish is a combination of wild and unique creative flavors. Had home-smoked brisket panini & also their $15 lunch special which was a maple-soaked chicken breast atop sliced spiced sweet potato with marscapone cheese and berries sauce. We lastly ate an unbelievable beignet tasting platter for dessert. All accompanied by Canadian Calgary country music -- very surreal. Our server and host, "Alison," was so attentive and caring she helped make it an even tastier special experience. read more

I feel compelled to write this review because I am still shocked by how bad our experience was. We have been to this restaurant before Covid and always had excellent food and service, it was our go to place for a special occasion. We met up with our parents for brunch a months ago and sat on the patio ,It was a good thing we had a lot to talk about because it took so long for our food to arrive ( an hour) but once it did... it was great. Because our parents enjoyed brunch so much they wanted to take us there for dinner. Saturday evening we arrived expecting a fabulous meal but it turned out to be the opposite despite the place being empty except for a few people outside. We ordered mussels to start which were ok but not meaty enough, a few shells were empty. Then we shared an excellent wine while we waited for our food. Three meals arrived. My father in law ordered chicken and was given a tiny Caesar salad instead which he refused. The server ( who was great despite this error) had put in the wrong order. This meant we ate our food while he sat with nothing until his arrived after we had finished our meal and he was not happy. I ordered the Arctic Char which was fabulous but I was the only one that had a good meal. At the prices Westlake Grill charges you should ALL have an excellent meal! The desserts were not great either. My husband ordered ice cream which was so hard it jumped out of the bowl when he tried to dig his spoon in! The crème brûlée was bordering on curdling when it should be smooth and was flavourless. The chocolate mousse was also hard , definitely not a smooth mousse. This meal was beyond disappointing and we felt terrible as we expected much better. You are charging ridiculous prices for so so food. Bring your prices down and serve good food because with high prices comes high expectations which you seem to have difficulty reaching. read more

Set in a beautiful location, the decor is nice, great patio, beautiful views. The service was excellent - professional friendly and knowledgeable staff The food was incredible. We started with the bread board - all freshly baked in house and served warm fresh from the oven. It was delicious! The menu had so many tempting options and everything sounded ( and looked ) excellent- but I really just wanted a cheeseburger. I was not disappointed. It was delicious as was the beet, watermelon and feta salad I had on the side. For dessert - Saskatoon Berry Tart fresh from the oven, easily the best I've ever tasted. If you are just passing through the area it is worth it to stop here and fuel up. You won't be disappointed! read more

Gorgeous location. You feel like you're miles out of the city when you're really just on the border. The only place in Red Deer so far that I've come across with a diverse imported beer bottle selection. They had my favorite: Innis and Gunn Stout. I was there for a company dinner celebration. We had catered homemade burgers freshly served off the grill. The place provided homemade toppings like guacamole, sweet corn relish, carmalized onions, and sauces. You can sign a waiver to ride a horse-back carriage. After a lovely meal, you can continue the beautiful afternoon/evening with a stroll through the park. We have work meetings every once in a while and we always go here for supper. We ran across the restaurant by pure chance and from that first experience, we were sold. The quality of food is amazing and so is the service. The price point is a bit high but I think well valued. I attended the restaurant last night with my 5 of my other Board colleagues and we were disappointed. The guys who had the wine tasting and cheese plate ($35) were thoroughly impressed with the wine selection and the expertise of our waitress. A bunch of us ordered the rib eye. It was surf and turf night so we had six large prawns added to the dish at no additional cost! The steaks were perfectly cooked with excellent flavour and served on amazing potato "chips". Have the chips and don't replace it with something else. The chips are amazing! Other great dish the team tried was the duck breast and beef brisket. The lime chicken was also good as well. Folks - this place is consistently a winner. We've been thorough impressed everything we've visited so I'd highly recommend this place. !! read more

The ambiance wasn't terrible, and our server was great. I called ahead to see if I needed a reservation for a decent table. Was told not to worry about it. We ended up being sat in the middle of the room upstairs which felt cramped. But okay, that's fine. Our host sat us with the menu and we started to peruse the menu. Before the server got there I had picked out 2 or 3 things I was interested in, and my girlfriend did the same. When the server showed up we were informed that a lot of their menu was currently unavailable. It was just bad luck that it was all the things I was interested in, but either way, it was pretty frustrating. We decided to just split an appetizer and grab a couple of drinks instead of getting entrees we weren't really into. We ordered the Alix Chips and at a $15.50 price point were exceptionally disappointed when the food we received was very overcooked (dark brown potato chips) and over seasoned and the bottom third of the bowl appeared to be mostly chip crumbs at what looked like random bits of food from the fryer. Perhaps they were cooked wrong, or maybe that's just how they make them. To me, it didn't matter. We paid our bill, tipped our server and don't intend to return. read more

I was not at all impressed by fiod, service, or facilities, needless to say price: 1) they do not know how to cook a $60 steak. I did not eat it and sent it back. 2) there were flies inside 3) they do not know how to cook duck 4) they do not know how to cook risotto 5) the only things that were good on our selection (party of 9) were the burgers and the lamb chops. I particularly do not recommend it and will not go back end it up paying $160 for a "just good" over cooked duck with something that was supposed to be risotto that was just sticky dried rice a steak that was horrible, a burger a pint os sangria and 2 desserts ( desserts were good) I will not go back was there yesterday sept 1 after having been in Edmonton for the amazing G&R concert. read more

We hosted a bridal shower at West Lake Grill today. The event planning staff was excellent in helping us plan an event that would allow us to gather but still comply with the Covid restrictions. The room they provided was spacious enough to allow for physical distancing but small enough to allow for conversation. The usual dessert buffet they provided for this type of event was converted to a plated sampling of desserts. These desserts were extremely delicious and our guests loved every one of them. Pros: easy to get a reservation; friendly staff; prompt service; good food for the most part. Cons: expensive, considering some notable oversights; hit-and-miss steak doneness; steamed potato not taste tested in kitchen (too salty); overly tart Caesar salad; over done ravioli appetizer; dirty windows; fake flowers as decoration; DEAD FLOWERS at front entrance; construction of front entrance during high season; large table for six propped up with a clipboard underneath! I provide these seemingly nitpicking observations to alert the owners to their apparent unawareness or disinterest in elevating their restaurant's optics to match their prices. I realize this is a ranch and a City owned property but this could truly be more of a gem with a bit more effort. Customers DO notice these things, and will dine elsewhere. This was our second visit. On our first visit we were seated at a booth that was too small for four regular sized adults. On our second visit there was only our party and two others, but all seated in close proximity. West Lake Grill at the Heritage Ranch is delicious, innovative, and healthy. Our group had the vegetarian panini with half fries/half berry salad, beef brisket quesadilla with berry salad, and the watermelon/beet salad with grilled chicken. All of the meals were beautifully plated, fresh, and bursting with flavor. The beef brisket quesadilla was definitely a highlight - so tender and flavorful - and the fries hit the spot. As a bonus, the staff are accommodating and polite, and wine was on special (ALL wines were $6 for 6 ounces or $9 for 9 ounces). Will never drive between Edmonton and Calgary without stopping here again (it's right off the highway)!! We followed up lunch with a scenic walk by the river. Just perfect. read more

We found the food to be excellent. The staff are attentive and courteous. It was a birthday dinner for one member of our party. The staff set her place at the table with a lovely long stem red rose. It was a quiet week night and the staff lit the fireplace just for us. Our servers were young and enthusiastic; they had not yet received thorough training and were missing some of the more refined aspects of serving (pouring the wine for the guests, not reaching across the table, distributing side plates rather than placing a stack on the table for guests to distribute). With some quite minor improvements in attention to detail, West Lake Grill is 5 stars. read more

Would love to have been able to give 5 stars as we really enjoyed the atmosphere, the service and the selection. Our waitress was fantastic and any interactions with other staff was positive and pleasant. Our only issue was a very over cooked steak. We requested medium rare, our server informed us that their medium rare was quite bloody, we agreed that was how we liked it. Unfortunately, it arrived well done. They did offer to cook a new steak but we didn't want to wait and eat after the rest of the table so they did remove that meal from the bill. Overall, we would absolutely return but probably wouldn't order the special as we feel they may have been somewhat precooked. The other meals, the appetizer and the deserts were all great! read more

A hidden gem overlooking the Red Deer River valley. We had an excellent meal which was highlighted with a cheese board with California wines selected by our server. The cheese and wine combo was on $36 for both of us and included 5 different wines and probably more if we so wished. It was a great value. Pleasantly surprised! My husband and I went for a date dinner an had the dinner for 2, 1/2 chicken with brisket. The price seemed high ($70) but we left with leftovers. The chicken was delicious. Service was fast. We were up in the top dinning room and everyone else seemed very satisfied with their meals as well. We will for sure go back. They recently added a family style sunday brunch that sounds pretty good. read more
