I've driven past West Marine hundreds of times, but never realized what it was until last week! My husband and I recently joined a boat club and needed to stock up on boating gear for our upcoming adventures. West Marine carries a nice selection of boating gear, clothing and other accessories for water activities. The store is not just limited to boating and water gear; West Marine also sells bikes, coolers, grills, luggage, and outdoor dog gear. We purchased a dog life preserver so that our furry friend could join us on our boat trips. We had no clue what type of dog preserver we should purchase, but the staff was so helpful in suggesting the best one for our dog. We also purchased some dry bags to keep our electronics dry on the boat and my husband purchased some linen shirts. The store had such a nice clothing selection that I think I will be back to purchase some clothing for our next tropical getaway. (For some odd reason it is impossible to find a swimsuit in Tampa in November even though it feels like summer 80% of the year.) Will definitely be back to West Marine soon! read more

West Marine - Purchaing a life preserver for our furry friend so he can go boating with us. - Boating Near Me - Tampa, Florida

I needed to replace my anchor, so I called the Clearwater West Marine. They had the anchor in stock that I was looking for, which was a Lewmar DTX 14lbs Stainless Steel. The West Marine in St Petersburg did not have it. I decided to call the Tampa store on Cypress. I spoke to one of the salespeople there and gave him the information of the anchor above. He left to check and came back and said, yes, we have it in stock. I was driving from the Tierra Verde area, so I wanted to make sure they had it. I then gave the salesperson all the information of the anchor again, as well as advising him the DTX anchor was the stainless steel one. I asked him if he was sure they had this anchor, He again stated yes, we have it no problem. I then drove over 45 minutes to the store, proceeded to the anchor area, to only see Galvanized anchors and no Lewmar DTX. The only Lewmar anchors were the Delta model galvanized. I went and spoke to one of the salespersons and advised him I had just called and gave him the same information, regarding the anchor I came to pick up. He said they didn't have any stainless-steel anchors in stock, and maybe I had called the wrong store. I then took my phone out and asked him what his telephone number was, which was the same one I showed him on my phone. He said sorry, as he started speaking to someone else. I advised him, that I now had to drive from his store to the West Marine in Clearwater, then drive from there back to Tierra Verde area, doing a complete large circle and spending 45 minutes to get to his store, then another 30-35 minutes to get to the Clearwater store and then another 45 minutes to get home. All of this could have been avoided, since I had spoken to salesperson there at length and asked him several times, as I gave him the information on anchor and asked him again if they had it for sure. He reassured me they had that specific anchor, stainless steel. With Just a little attention to any of the information given via the phone before coming up, would have saved a lot of driving. I could have just gone to the Clearwater store, which I did to purchase the anchor. Not very professional or know what they are doing. read more

West Marine is my favorite boating shop. Even when there was Boaters World and Boat US, I always ended up at West Marine. I have the most experience with this location and a couple in St. Pete next to the Harborage and Maximo marinas. The Cypress location is fairly large, but the one closest to Harborage had a Bargain Center with lots of discounted stuff. My favorite section is electronics (of course) and their screw section. Every flavor, size, and shape of stainless steel screw is available here. However, note they don't carry metric screws. If you need metric stainless steel screws you will need to go to Ace Hardware. They have the most extensive collection of metric stainless steel screws in Tampa. And as boaters know, it's stainless steel or rust! The staff at all the West Marines I've been at has always been friendly and helpful. You can tell they are all boaters. Prices are a bit steep. Sure, you can get most of the stuff cheaper on the Internet somewhere, but there is something to be said about touching what you plan to buy for your boat, being able to talk to a fellow boater about his opinions on what you are trying to do, and being able to get it on the spot when you have the engine running and are wanting to go now. For these reasons I think West Marine is as good as it gets! read more
