I went to school with one of the daughters and knew all of the kids... but that was a while ago and it doesn't influence my review. They do really well for an independant IGA store. They are large and carry a wide variety of items. They will order anything for you. Tom has been in the meat dept as long as I can remember. My dad always sought him out and I still do. Need a special cut... Tom will do it. Need fresh oysters... Tom will do it. Just want to say hi to a friendly face.... Tom will do it. You don't get service like this just anywhere. The downfall? Prices. It's well worth the short drive to Wal-Mart or Meijers to get better prices on every item. McMaken's probably has to pay more than these huge chains so the difference is understandable but in the current recession it's regrettable.

They primarily have granolas (a ton!), jams and preserves, some bakery treats (like tarts and breads), and some hot sauces. It feels like a much smaller version of the usual "Buy Ohio" stores that you can find in some malls. There's a lot of excess space in here still, though, so they might be planning on expanding their selection. If you're dying for a cheap, quick snack while shopping, Maria's also has quite a few single-packaged cookies, treats, and even fresh bananas/apples that you can pick up and take with you for a mall snack!
