A true hit or miss. I stayed nearby for about a month and frequented the thriftway because it was so close. The first thing to note is that it is shockingly expensive. When I first arrived, I just thought Seattle had crazy food prices. Then I went to a different grocery store and found out that no, it's just thriftway. I can't imagine why things are SEVERAL dollars more. My usual weekly grocery trip is $60-$80, and here it was always over $100. On top of this, I found the quality of the food lacking. I had to return several items because they were spoilt or molded. I bought a granola bar and thank goodness I checked the date, it was over a year expired?? How long have those been sitting there, does nobody check? I found that several of the employees were really kind and helpful, but others were straight-up impossible. One time, I bought lemons, and the guy put both his hands on the scale and leaned (?), so two lemons came out to $10. I mentioned it and he deleted the charge (thank goodness I caught it), but then he rang me up for 4 organic lemons. I said hey, I only have two, and he just finished ringing me up, handed me the receipt, and told me to go wait in line and get a refund. Beyond being charged $10 (!!!), then being charged for organic, I had to spend my time now trying to get a refund. However, some employees were really nice. When I returned the year-expired bar, the manager gave me a candy and a sincere apology. When I returned moldy tomatoes, they took them back without even needing a receipt. So it really just depends on who you get, but they definitely need more training on the newer people. They have all the goods a normal chain would, but a very 50/50 experience and VERY steep prices. I would only go here out of necessity.

Very clean and organized locally owned supermarket . Same stock as big chain supermarkets but with a friendly atmosphere. Friendly staff and great service

I really enjoy shopping at West Seattle Thriftway. They are a little pricer than Safeway, but you definitely get a better shopping experience here. I think their parking lot is pretty good. They always have plenty of open parking spaces and each stall is decently sized. Thiftway is located in the Morgan Junction, and it is really easy to get to, no matter which direction you are coming from. They have all of your typical departments: produce, meats and seafood, bakery, and wine/beer/spirits. They also have a really good floral shop, an espresso stand, and a specialty deli with hot foods. I am constantly surprised by the rare items that I can only find at Thriftway. One day I went to several Asian grocery stores, but I couldn't find Thai Basil. However, Thriftway had tons of it! Another time I was preparing for a Thanksgiving potluck in early November. I tried to buy a fresh turkey breast at Whole Foods, but they said they wouldn't have any until the week before Thanksgiving. Again, Thriftway saved the day and apparently they have fresh turkey breast in stock all year long! The employees there have always been friendly and helpful. The owners also seem to be really cool and sometimes they have fun contests in the store.

They have unique items at this market. I love how they have local favorites that you can find and it's hard to find it at other markets. Such as Cougar Mountain Cookies, Ellenos and Seattle Chocolates! Tell me where else can you find these things at your local market? They have a deli, bakery, home deco section. Everything is clean. I love how it's location in West Seattle. It reminds me of Metropolitan Market, but smaller.

Friendly staff, well stocked, easy parking. Thriftway is a quality grocery store. A bit pricey however.

As far as a grocery store it's very good, lots of selection and good quality. Prices however are insane, like silly high.

You can get both local and Japanese-imported ingredients, but also popular spices, noodles, and ingredients from other Asian countries, as well - truly an international grocery store. They frequently support local businesses, which will be on display in the bakery and refrigerated sections. Their selection of food and fun goodies are always on rotation, so every visit is different. They even have gauchapon machines at one of the entrance. During the holidays, like Lunar New Year or New Year's holiday, they will feature food related to the cultures that celebrate the respective holidays. Once, they even had a photo feature for fans to meet the singing voice actor of Jinu (Andrew Choi) from Kpop Demon Hunters. Another time, they had Hello Kitty visit. There's a food hall with some delicious food, including their store-brand, Waji's. Uwajimaya is a huge boost to the local community - so glad we have it right next to the light rail for accessibility too.

My son and his best friend have been nagging me for YEARS to come here so my wife and i did…read moreyesterday. My single, nagging question is "What took me so long??" No idea. The store's far larger than I'd imagined and carries far more stuff. The produce dept. got me right away when I found GREEN lemongrass (almost impossible to find in my county), black garlic, large fresh ginger--and garlic scapes (they call it spring garlic). I was especially hoping to find garlic scapes since I just discovered them and have already found a great stir-fry recipe for them. A also bought some soy sauces along with an XO sauce that are hard to find in regular supermarkets. Yes, I already have stir-fry plans for all of them. There's far more food stuff I could've bought but the question that decided me against it was "Who else in the house will eat it other than me?" The meats pre-sliced for Korean/Japanese dishes tempted me but were pricey. Besides I own a meat slicer. The one thing I didn't find which was my sole disappoint was Shaoxing wine, a Chinese rice win. They carried the cooking version but not the drinking one. Contrast that with shelves filled with Japanese sakes. I prefer Shaoxing for stir-fry dishes and already have some at home so the disappoint wasn't too great. We rarely get to Seattle so it'll be a while until we re-visit the store. The good news is that a new Uwajimaya will open in Tacoma next year. We plan to shop there a lot more often. Definitely a store worth visiting even if you don't cook Asian dishes. they carry all kinds of cooking stuff--including woks, rice makers, and lots of gadgets. Our son's friend even bought travel chopsticks. I told him he'll be required to whip those out at our next Chinese stir-fry dinner. He better like black garlic and garlic scapes.

It's always stocked, super easy to navigate, and the staff are always ridiculously helpful and friendly. Thats the secret sauce. Even with they're busy, the employees never change their attitude. The new version has hunter green straps. I was hoping that this Capitol Hill location would have it... I didn't see a parking lot. I circled the block about three times and decided to park on the street around the corner. A clerk inside the store said they have a parking garage - enter from 17th ... UHG! I'll look next time. Since we don't have Trader Joe's in Hawaii, I like to bring snacks home, but I focused this time on those canvas bags and even got some mini canvas bags and the olive green insulated totes! I also looked at the greeting cards, fresh flowers, and new items. Thanks for the convenient restroom and friendly employees! We were able to find Joey, the mascot, and received stickers and lollipops as our reward! This was a fun shopping experience!
