I am visiting Houston this weekend specifically to dance and the heel of my favorite dance shoes broke last night. Today, I walked into West Shoe Hospital about an hour before they closed and inquired about getting the heel fixed. I was prepared to beg and plead to have it fixed today but before I could, JR offered to fix it on the spot for me. Said it would take 10 min. Then he suggested I change the bottom of the other heel at same time so they would be even and to avoid the chance of that one falling off too. SOLD! I sat and waited and true to his word, he was finished quickly. The price was super reasonable and the repair job looks fabulous! He even scrapped the bottom suede for me!! LOVE THIS PLACE! I like to thrift. Unfortunately, with thrifting comes great shoes with with aged glue, and I was faced with a vintage dress shoe in need of some major professional gluing. I have never had a shoe break on me before (and so have never attempted to fix a shoe myself), so I was glad to find a shoe hospital so close by my house. West Shoe Hospital is located in the back corner of a strip mall, so when you go make sure you drive all the way into the shopping strip to find it. Walking in the store, I was greeted by a small ringing of a rooster-shaped bell and the friendly hello of an older gentlemen. He was surrounded by shoes, giving me no room to question the enthusiasm he undoubtedly has for his craft. I showed him my tragic shoes, and he told me with a kind smile that the glue was old, further proving this by continuing to rip the bottoms off the shoes with ease. He told me they would be ready by the next day, and I went on my merry way. When I picked them up the next day, the shoes looked brand new! He charged me $12, an extremely amazing price for the craftsmanship shown in his work on the shoes, and thanked me for the business. This sweet man only takes cash, so make sure you have some on you when you go. I can now rest easily now knowing that if I ever have another shoe malfunction that I can always take them to West Shoe Hospital and get them back looking better than new! read more

He was able to lower the heel on both pair of my $200 leather Freebirds (I bought two of this same exact pair in different colors) to the perfect height for me. I have a pair of wading boots that routinely see the salt waters of Texas. Over time a pair of the plastic hooks for the laces let go. Not only was JR able to do the work, he was willing. He even made a few suggestions before he started the job, concerning replacement of the remaining hooks with brass d-rings. He and I carried on a conversation as he plied his trade. Best shoe/boot repair guy in town. I have a pair of ostrich boots that I was very hesitant to take anywhere to get resoled & polished since color on the boots are a light pecan. Every other shoe repair I went to kept telling me the color of the boot would end up being darker after maintenance & would cut sole in half to replace. Thankfully JR did otherwise, he understood exactly what I wanted. He took off all the sole replaced with new to avoid sole falling off with time and cleaned/polished boots without distorting color. There's a saying that says "If I cut you off, chances are you handed me the scissors!" That statement couldn't be more relevant to my recent situation at West Shoe Hospital. After 3 years of being a loyal customer, I'm cutting this place off with no regrets. *Big sigh* Where do I begin? I brought a pair of boots to Carlos (the owner) to be repaired. I will admit, I forgot about the boots and left them at the shop for over 3 months or so. When I came back to the shop recently, I brought another pair of open toe sandal heels to him to have the tips replaced. I then realized my boots needed to be picked up as well, so I told Carlos I would pay for both when my heels were ready. I came in on a Monday and he promised to have the heels ready on Tuesday, but I didn't make it back to the shop until that Friday. The problem was, when I came to pick up and pay, Carlos had no clue where my shoes were- and I'm not talking one pair, BOTH pair!!! Seriously, what part of the game is that? He looked around for the shoes to no avail. He then asked me to come back the next day to give him some time to find the shoes. I agreed and came back the next day which was a Saturday. When I came back, it was the same situation- my shoes were nowhere to be found. I then volunteered to help him search for both pair in the back because he seemed to not remember what the shoes looked like. The boots, I can understand- simply because they had been up there for awhile. But the open toe shoes I brought to him that same week? Nuh uh. He should've known where those were. I went to the back where he does all his work and it was a mess! Shoes stacked up in piles with no tags on them to tell what belongs to who. I'm thinking to myself "no wonder why shoes are getting lost, this place is a mess!" After looking high and low, my shoes didn't turn up. His attitude had turned left, as if there wasn't anything he could do about it. At this point, my "pissed off" radar had gone from 0-100, real quick! I let Carlos know how disappointed I was and that this was unacceptable! He finally found the boots, thank goodness. But guess where they were? In a random pile, up against the wall that he just happened to look through. Come on man! But the saga continued. My Vince Camuto heels were still missing! Laaaawd, somebody put out an Amber Alert! Smh! After making multiple visits to the store and the shoes still hadn't turned up, I presented Carlos with a pricing sheet from the internet of another Vince Camuto shoe that was very similar to the ones he had lost. At this point ish was about to get real- he knew he was going to have to come off some coins to make up for the loss. He then agreed to just order the shoe for me. Because the shoe was rather pricey, I told him I would come back the next day to see if I could find the shoe cheaper on another website, to try to save him some bucks since he had agreed to order them (yeah, I got heart). But then it happened- later that evening I got a phone call from Carlos saying he had good news- he had found my shoes and I could come by the next day and pick them up. I get to the store the next day to pick up the shoes that I thought I'd never see again- somewhat happy, but 100% side eyeing. When I asked where he found them all of a sudden, he said behind a machine. Whoa. What? Wow! Needless to say, the tab for the shoes was on the house. And after sharing my thoughts on this whole fiasco and even suggesting that he get more organized, I was out the door- for good. My loyalty to West Shoe Hospital is now a thing of the past. You lose TWO pairs of MY shoes only to find them multiple visits later, lying in a pile of other random shoes? Chile I can't! Carlos does good work, however he has gotten extremely careless with things. He seems to be all over the place and doesn't know what belongs to who anymore. I cannot risk him losing my items again, and as a result I will not be coming back. read more

My job entails me to walk from offices, to shops, to rig/well sites, and back to the office. I have many heels that are in great shape and just needed to have the black end replaced because they were worn through to the metal. You can't beat an $8/pair heel repair, and the man is not only talented and quick, but incredibly sweet. They only accept cash and check, neither of which I had on me, and he didn't hesitate to just tell me to take my shoes and bring the cash later. If I could give 100 stars, I would. Carlos was the kindest man and turned my day around. I was walking out of my office to go to lunch when my shoe's wedge completely came off. I was then without a shoe. I googled the closest shoe shop and found West Shoe Hospital. I called and told Carlos of my emergency, so he told me to come in and he'd help. I came in, he grabbed my shoe and got right to work. I then asked if I could go to lunch and come right back. He then asked for my shoe size and handed me a pair of shoes to borrow so I could go to lunch without looking like a mess!! When I came back, my shoe was ready and I was only charged $10.
