Local family-run business does great work for shoe maintenance/repair and some sales, especially of orthopedic shoes. I can't comment on the sales, but the shoe maintenance/repair is high quality and reasonably priced. I've been going here for 11 years. A comment on the hours: Family. Run. Business. Not a soulless chain. One person is there for all these hours and that's it. Exactly the kind of place I want to patronize and I am perfectly happy respecting work-life balance in others. I am not that spoiled American who wants 24/7 and gets crappy quality. I'm a Houstonian who left in 1990. I came back yesterday for a wedding. The pin for the belt buckle on the newish Dunhill belt I packed somehow broke in the suitcase. The belt is dark brown on one side and burgundy on the other, smartly matching same Paolo Scafora and Berluti shoes. I have 2 hours between functions to fix my belt disaster. Uncle Sam tells me to go to Walmart....man I sigh to myself, I may have to. I've got one shot, one opportunity, and I head toward The Village. The owner Edie was there. I told her I wasn't sure if I came to the right place. I am a disabled veteran and was first sent to the Village shoe shop many years ago. The attention to my specialized requirements and needs have allowed me to have shoes that enabled me to function normally. After a severe accident, I required lifts on one shoe and they were precisely and properly made to my requirements. After some surgeries, I no longer required the lifts and they were able to allow me to continue wearing the shoes by removing the lifts. Having two feet of different sizes is troubling in purchasing new shoes and just this past week I received new shoes that are extremely comfortable and fit as needed. They are a hard working team and with their orthopedic specialties they respond in the most timely manner possible but like many medical specialties, sometimes something must be expedited and something delayed to accomplish that. Dropped off pair of shoes for shoe shine - was told they would be done by 4pm same day and available for pick up as early as 8AM following day. Arrived for pick up next morning at 930, shoes were not done and had not even been started. Waited 30 minutes for them to be ready because "they were accidentally forgotten since the store was so backed up on other orders." I was not charged for the service, at least. One star for doing a good job on the shine One more star for calling me back after I left to tell me I had left something at the store. I'm a guy who is tough on shoes and have learned the hard way that it's better (and cheaper) in the long run to spend a bit more on a well made pair. That's where this place comes in. I will still trash the soles and heels on any pair of shoes but this place returns them to me looking like a brand new pair of shoes everytime. I wish I could show you some before & after pics because the craftsmanship is outstanding and their repairs are quality and do last. Not positive but I suspect they may be a little pricier than some of the competition. For instance, new soles & heels will run around $50. If you have spent $300+ on a pair of shoes then this is well worth it to get a "new" pair of shoes back. Ladies, I know you probably buy a few pairs of cheap shoes for the odd event or wear out a couple of times. This is not the place to go to salvage them unless you REALLY love them. If your "nicer" Manolo's, Prada etc. need some work, this is THE ONLY place to go in my opinion. Best test of a business I think is how they react to a problem. The only time I had an issue with them I did have to jump through a few hoops to get to the owner (normally would deduct a star for that, but their work is so exceptional that would be unfair). Once I did speak with her, she made good and kept me a happy customer immediately. Rice Village = parking PITA and as they are not a chain (thank God), hours are not the most convenient for the working man or woman. Brought in a pair of older but seldomly used shoes where the sole had begun to separate and were beginning to flip. They came back looking great but after about a dozen wearing's over the course of several months they began to separate and flip again. Brought them in for repair again because after an even shorter period of time the same thing happened. Do they use a lesser or inadequate adhesive or what? So when I saw this little joint say that they had Boots on Sale... well I walked right on in. When the lady at the front asked me what she could help me with, I said.. well what I've been raving about above. Her answer was, "We really don't have those here." WHAT? I was so disappointed with my experience here. My boyfriend bought me a pair of Birkenstocks for Christmas and I brought them back before New Years for a different color. They did not have the color I wanted so they kindly ordered me the color I wanted and said it would only be a few weeks. When I called back 2 1/2 weeks later to check in I talked to a woman who said they were back ordered until February. No one had called me to update me. I let it go and called back in February where I talked to a man who was very rude. He told me someone had called me but I never received any voicemails. I asked when the shoes were coming and he said he was going to call Birkenstock then get back to me. I had to call again the next week to remind them when I finally was told they were coming in March. Well March came around and they still weren't here. My boyfriend ending up calling and the woman couldn't find the receipt at first. When she finally found it she couldn't explain why the shoes weren't there. At the end of it we asked for our money back and went right on to the Birkenstock website and had them in a weak. I am disappointed in the unorganized and rude workers. I will not be coming back here and advise others to look at other local shoe shops. read more

I went to the Village Shoe Shop because my physical therapist recommended it. I have had several stress fractures and am recovering from a fracture on my right foot. I made an appointment with Edie to have her recommend shoes that would be comfortable for me to wear and to have a new set of orthotics made. She did an amazing job of finding the right shoes for the issues that I have with my feet. She spent around 3 hours helping me. She explained why she chose the shoes she did and what she felt they would accomplish. I took the shoes on a trip and was able to walk without a significant amount of pain. The shoes I bought are expensive, but I have bought some expensive ones on my own that felt good when I tried them on and then after wearing them a while they hurt my feet. I can truly say that the ones she recommended fit very well. She had to stretch some of the shoes to help with the fit. I went back last week to get my orthotics and she had me bring in the shoes that I bought to make sure that they fit properly in all of them. She likes to add the metatarsal pads herself. She watched me walk and made adjustments to the pads to secure a better fit. This appointment lasted 2 hours. I never felt rushed during the whole process. The new orthotics have been amazing so far. I highly recommend them for any foot problem you may have. I had no issues with customer service. I received a call or an e-mail when my shoe order came in and when the orthotics were ready. One of the best shoe repairs in Houston! They are so helpful and friendly and do an excellent job repairing Shoes for a good price! They totally repaired my Valentino shoes for $70. They changed the sole and the heel, added these studs under the shoe at the bottom front (highly recommend for all pointy shoes), buffed the leather and made them look brand new. I had a terrible experience at the Village Shoe Shop. I took a very expensive high heel sandal in to be cleaned. The shoe had a small scuff mark on the strap and they said no problem. When I picked the shoe up a few days later, the shoe was destroyed. I mean, ruined. It was nubuck, and they had used the wrong brush or something, and completely scraped off the leather in some places, I mean it was horrible. When I expressed my outrage, they said they could try and get the leather to lay back down, and I could come back Monday and talk to the owner, Edie. Well, when I came back, the shoe still looked crappy. I expected Edie to offer me some kind of compensation, but only after arguing did she offer me my money back for the cleaning. Not good enough I said. So she offered me a $50 store credit. Still not good enough. I point out one of the worst marks they made on the shoe and she accused me of bringing it in in that condition so I just left since she wasn't budging and was basically just calling me a liar. NEVER TAKE ANYTHING TO BE CLEANED OR REPAIRED AT THE VILLAGE SHOE SHOP IF YOU WANT IT BACK IN THE SAME CONDITION. read more

I decided to invest in a pair of Le Silla Boots. I am on the thin-side, so I have difficulty finding a pair of boots that will fit my calves. Usually I have to resort to layering - wearing thick socks and then jeans over, but I decided to take a risk and take my boots to be taken in at the Village Shoe Shop. I am so glad I decided to bring my boots here. They fit SO SNUG! I can wear them without tights! The people at the Village Shoe shop do work that a lot of other places are not willing or hesitant to do. I dropped my boots off on Tuesday May 13th. I understood they would not be available that Saturday May 17th as they had a backlog. I explained to the CSR I could not drive into their location during the week so I would p/u the boots when they open on May 24th. I called today May 23rd to see if my boots would be ready and was told they had not started on them. As my ticket stated 5/24 it was standard policy they could not be picked up until after 4 on May 24th. The CSR had completely forgotten our conversation! Then the CSR on the phone started arguing I was exagerating my three week wait after I explained I would not be able to p/u until May 31st due to their location. Needless to say I will p/u my boots tomorrow and get a full refund as this is not the type of vendor I want my hard earned money keeping in business. read more

i used village shoes for the lift in my left shoe for over 25 years---it's not easy to find a place that does this work. i had to take in an old shoe every time i went since they don't seem to save anything and certainly aren't computerized. sometimes it was right, other times it wasn't and i had to make multiple trips to get it right. after all the years i went there, they acted like they'd never seen me before when i went in. the staff is not friendly or helpful. edie is nicer than the others, but after she missed a couple of appointments with me, i realized while she may be nicer, she's not any more helpful than the rest. i discovered American Heelers in Ohio. they got my shoe right the FIRST time, have all my info stored, and are so easy to use. free postage for the shoe you send in, and they are CHEAPER than this place. their customer service is also far superior---they even follow up to make sure you're happy. read more
