I've been here twice and got my haircut messed up by two barbers. Each time they give me an uneven and nowhere near blended fade. Second time, within the first minute of the haircut, the barber cuts my ear with his blade and doesn't even apologize as blood flows down my ear. Then, he goes on to nick my ear piercing causing it to almost fall out. They left hair all in my eyes and face, didn't even have the courtesy to brush it out. Both times, I had to go home and touch up my own haircut to even look good. I was ashamed telling my buddies I paid 40 bucks for a cut that looked like it was free. For what they think they're worth, these guys blow and you're probably better off going to Supercuts since they'd actually put time and effort into cutting your hair. read more

I went here yesterday for a haircut and had an extremely negative experience. The music playing was offensive to me with every other word being fuck or nigger. I told the barber when he asked if I had an appt. and I said no. He told me I would have to wait an hour . I replied I did not like the music and was not comfortable because of the profanity. He said it was not nigger but "nigga" and I decided to leave, shocked. I stood outside the shop stunned and he opened the door to ask if I had anything else to say. I did not say a word. he went back inside and seconds later he replied "take your Jew fro down the street to supercuts". He seemed to want a physical confrontation but I am a 71 year old man and he appeared to be in his thirties. Very hateful. Nope. Just gotta stay away from this place. I came here because we were in town for a mini getaway. The guys were fine. I actually enjoyed a good conversation with the barber. Price was fine. Those are the only positives. My haircut was so bad, I had to pay to get it fixed by my regular barber back home. He showed me where the barber at West Side messed up and how he managed to conceal his mess up. Perhaps that's why their schedule was wide-open on a Saturday? read more

They may be great barbers or terrible; I wouldn't know because I had an appointment for 10AM (when they open) and no one showed up until 10:20. They confirmed I had a 10AM appointment, but that it was with someone else. "You should never book ahead with (forgot the name, Lulo maybe), who knows when he'll be in." I wasted at least an hour getting the the ship, waiting, and then getting home. Also spent $20 in Lyft rides. All just to be disrespected. Been going here for two years. Started off great, but about two months ago they messed up there scheduling, And Brian had to cut my hair cause lalo dipped to burger (no big deal long as I get a cut) except they made me wait for over an hour to get a damn cut. Then today I had an appt for 2 pm show up at 2pm, and no one is there? Waited in the poring rain for about 5 min an left. Basically they will skip you if your 5min late but won't do shit if they are late as hell. Good cuts, but poor customer service. They need to take down people's number an call them if there is an issue. All in all I'd rather give my hard earned money to someone who showed me a ounce of customer appreciation. read more

After Taylor left, I made an appointment with Sky and was 10 minutes late, to which he said I'm too and that he's all booked despite the shop being completely empty and him previously saying on the phone that he has openings 30 minutes after mine. Now, to preface, I have worked in customer service for many years and know that sometimes things can go wrong on both ends, but I'm generally a pretty easy customer and I always try to give folks the benefit of the doubt. I remember hearing good things about this place when it was still Johnny's. Thought I'd give it a shot - turns out it was arguably one of the worst experiences I've had with a barber. The barber left/stopped twice in the middle of my cut to make sure he wasn't getting a ticket on his car, and then to have a rather lengthy conversation with a walk - in. I specifically told him I wanted to keep the length on top but to shape the sides. I walked out with super short cut - but it's probably because he was too busy watching the World Cup, scissors in hand, taking inches off my hair. I won't go into detail about the incredibly misogynistic, gossipy, sailor mouthed conversation amongst staff. To top it off, a cash only business that doesn't have change for a 20? I suppose I wouldn't have needed change if hadn't left a tip out of courtesy. I guess I understand now why people will break their wallet for a clean cut and good service. All the barbers are great, they provide excellent service, great conversations, and chill atmosphere. Lalo has always cut my hair, but the other barbers are just as skillful. This place wasted my entire morning because they messed up their scheduling. Had an appointment scheduled for 10:30am on Thursday (today). Drove down from Los Gatos for the haircut (30 minute drive) and arrived at 10:30am to see four guys occupying all four of the barber chairs and another three guys waiting. All four of us waiting had appointments for 10:30am and all four of us waited until at least 10:55am, at which point one of the guys working there finally asked me for my name, checked the books, and then realized they'd put me down for Friday somehow. There's no way I would have scheduled for Friday as I have work that day. So, not only are they running a half hour late, but they expect me to either come back again tomorrow or continue waiting until a chair is free - which at this rate could be another 1-2 hours, who knows, when I've already waisted an hour of my day with this place. By now, another two customers have walked in; so there are four guys filling all four barber chairs and six guys waiting 'in front of me'. Guy who asked me my name and checked the book apologized and offered me half off ($11 savings) if I continued to wait. No. I don't have time for that, that's why people schedule appointments in the first place. read more

I find the barbers in this establishment always in good spirits and willing to undertake the requested hair style - conventional or not. The haircuts are reasonably priced and though i'm a newcomer, I've seen them work on various styles like fades, tapers, and even designs. Some of the conversations in this place are a bit risqué but whatever, it's a barber shop not a church. I find the topics entertaining and merely a distraction from your average day-to-day encounter with a stranger. If we can't talk freely to our barber then what's the point right? It's like free therapy. One barber kept quoting a 1990's Benjamin Pratt gangster movie which I thought was kind of odd given the great detail in his quotes...nonetheless, I plan on coming back. Walked in at 2:30pm and made and appointment for 5pm the same day. Came back at 4:55pm, waited around for 15 minutes only to be told that the guy who was supposed to cut my hair had already left. The guy there told me if I came back at 9am the next day he'd give me a free cut. I came back at 9am the following day and waited around for another 15 minutes. They were fully closed, no one there. They don't even open until 10am. Avoid these a**holes like the plague. read more

West Side is definitely the best place to get a real cut in Santa Cruz. Unlike other shops in the area, the guys here take their time to make sure you're getting a premium hair cut. Johnny's my main barber, and it's clear he's been cutting hair for years. Lalo and Jose also do excellent work! These guys are pro's with the straight razor, you definitely get your moneys worth. There are some scathing reviews regarding the new management; it's inevitable you can't make everyone happy, since we all different- especially in Santa Cruz. I go in for a lineup or cut every few weeks and I have not once seen a dissatisfied customer. These guys create a relaxing and friendly atmosphere, and the music is always on point. If you asked for a good haircut in Santa Cruz, your choices would be West Side Barbershop, going over to San Jose, or out to Gilroy. These guys are that good. read more

I loved this place when it was Johnny's and Johnny would cut my hair. I went in after the transition of ownership and received the worst haircut experience of my life. Lalo seemed completely disinterested in paying attention to the cut. It was a poor haircut he did in 10 minutes. He charged me more than the sign said the cut costs and worst of all he didnt clean me up, he left hair all over me. It felt almost personal; like he didn't like me. And the experience felt gross. Its a "sceney" kind of place, so if you care about pretending you're cool more than you care about a genuinely friendly place and a good haircut, then maybe this is your place. Lastly, I question why women are rating this place. They do men's cuts. I am assuming these women are friends with the owner/staff. I rarely give yelp reviews, and having worked in restaurants where people could be unfairly scathing, I take this seriously. I've been going to this barber shop for over a year and I live about 40 mins away. Today for the very first time I was late for 8 mins and the barber told me he is going to half ass my haircut and cut me short. I asked him to please do his best. He was so rude and didn't give me a choice on my cut. He mentioned that he is sick and tired of people being late!!! I guess he forgets when we wait for him and he is late. Last time I had to wait 20 mins for one of the barber since he went to get food right before my cut and I still gave him a generous tip. Very disappointed!!! He didn't even showed me the back of my hair with a mirror and asked me to leave the chair as soon as he was done. Because they stopped being barbers and started being poncy hair stylists. No shaves, just weird topiary cuts done with an electric shears.
