Last summer, I had a troubling experience at this YMCA. My phone was stolen from the locker room by a young girl. When I asked her about it, she admitted to taking it and led me to her backpack, where she returned my phone. I suggested we go upstairs and inform an adult, but she became upset, so I decided to report it myself. Unfortunately, when I went upstairs, the situation escalated quickly. The swim instructor and the grandmother threatened me and even called the police. The police found that I had done nothing wrong, and the incident was recorded on camera, with my children corroborating my account. Despite this, the management did not take any appropriate action. The girl and her grandmother were not removed, and I felt unsafe and traumatized by the entire ordeal. I'm sharing this to warn others that there were issues with theft and a lack of proper response from the staff. This is why we no longer feel safe at this YMCA. read more

So I am a customer here at West Suburban YMCA. I come here on Monday, Wednesday. Sometimes Friday. The Staff pretty much know me. They treat me well. There is a lot of Tena here there around 3:45 pm. So the YMCA is Teen friendly. The YMCA has a family member ship for like 100 a month. But it could any amount of people. The Value is actually good with all that they have to do there. I have been going here since I was in my twenties. it used to be better back in the day with the track upstairs. I even applied here but got ghosted by management. the front desk is respectful, and the place is not to bad. the people here keep to themselves like most people these days. the sauna room can stink at times as they don't keep things really clean here. im going to try crunch and see how that is compared to ymca. read more

Never bring your kids here for the summer camp program. They will be stuck outside all day in any weather because I guess indoor facilities can't be used. Camp directors were unapproachable and very hard to work with. Camp directors were also rude to my children with a nothing being done to corrects the behavior of the directors. read more

What happened to the cedar sauna ?? They painted or oiled the CEDAR sauna with toxic stuff. What is wrong here?? Who decided that brilliant move?? Did you guys let some workmen tell you "it will look better?" Saunas - CEDAR saunas should NEVER be oiled or painted or stained. Its TOXIC!!!! Ypu lightly sand them if needed but again Its CEDAR its mold resistant, hypoallergenic and fights germs naturally; never needs anything done to it. I'm a longtime YMCA member, but am new to the West Suburban YMCA. First of all, the YMCA's mission of helping to support a healthy mind, spirit, and body for everyone is worthy of admiration. They offer all sorts of programs for all sorts of people. When my kids were younger, I loved that the Y I went to had a child watch. The West Suburban Y has one as well! Drop your kids off for a couple hours while you get your workout in. Other things about this particular location I love: +Indoor Track. It's small (17 loops = 1 mile) but when it's freezing or roasting outside, it does the trick +Indoor pool. You can swim laps or they have water aerobics classes you can partake in +Indoor cycling! They use "Performance IQ technology." It's a little more technologically advanced than I had enjoyed at my previous Y. It's nice to get a little more detailed info about your workout! They have plenty of parking (niiice!). They don't provide towels (I think they have bath size towels but no hand size towels in the workout areas and/or indoor cycling room, so you'll want to bring your own). Their prices are super reasonable ($84/month for a household membership) and the workers are always friendly and upbeat. Get to it! read more

The racism ay this YMCA is so blatant its ridiculous. I hold a family membership with my son. When ever we come in with our card in hand it's always a reason we can't come in. Today they asked for my ID with my card. Pictures are on file. They've kicked out my son claiming he didn't have a second ID. I've had staff literally yell in my face when scanning my card as though I broke their computer or made it slow down. Yeah I'm done with YMCA. It's is too expensive for people to act like they do. They're also nasty to the teens who go there to play basketball. Kicking them out of the gym for no reason and acting like their membership cards don't work. For what I use, this is the best Y in Milwaukee. The pool is 25 yards with a lot of lanes, good temps, and not usually too crowded. The hot tub is large and clean. The machines are in great shape. The have a ton of cardio machines. The weight room is sort of goofy and small since it wraps around the track, but it has everything I'm looking for. The indoor running track is short at 14 laps per mile, but had a nice surface on it. Finally, the locker room is amazing. You use your y card to pick your locker, the sauna seems brand new, the steam room is in great shape, and the layout is perfect. I don't use basketball and racquet ball courts, but for my daily workouts, I couldn't ask for more. read more

The basketball courts at West Suburban YMCA are consistently closed to basketball players. Multiple nights a week both sides of the gym are used to entertain a handful of small children for sports activities. If both sides are not used, the rims are raised so that players cannot shoot. This has been an issue for more than a decade. The argument that "both sides of the gym need to be used so that the kids can hear the instructor" is ill founded. Given that the winter season will likely bring in more basketball players from the city, I hope this YMCA can amend it's rules to meet the needs of it's entire population. No complaints here! Good weight facility, ample amount of cardio equipment and a ton of exercise classes. Facilities are clean and staff are friendly. I particularly appreciate the saunas available here. Pretty rare these days for a gym to have a steam room. read more

I'm a longtime member of the YMCA of Metro Milwaukee and occasionally use different YMCA's in the Milwaukee metro area because the membership includes use of all the YMCA facilities in the area. The West Suburban YMCA went through an extensive remodel several years ago and the workout areas are vastly improved. However, the locker rooms were largely untouched and can be a maze like adventure and can be dirty. The YMCA's are known for their programs and I have signed up and used this facility for several classes. Unfortunately, the instructors here can be a bit standoffish and sometimes rude. Earlier this year I signed up for a class and arrived only to find out it was canceled. I asked the front desk and they assured me that I had been contacted by phone and mail to inform me it was canceled as their records show that someone did that (uh - huh do you believe everything an employee tells you). It took 6 weeks and a number of phone calls to get my refund for that class as they said it had to be approved and come from the "central office". read more

I recently witness a long time employ, whom I know personally, be not only verbally harassed on multiple occasions but sworn at as well. What employ has the right to do that to another employ? I am also appalled by the use of his language. There could have been children around! My husband and I have been members for nearly 15 years and I am SHOCKED by how this manager was allowed to treat this employ! This manager I speak of is RUDE, stuck up and clearly arrogant with a tip of his shoulder. The fact that he also has tattoos that are none covered up is VERY unprofessional! This is a FAMILY centre, not a tattoo shop! I have NO IDEA what the YMCA was thinking then they hired him!!! The west sub-branch has been declining for a long time and I wouldn't be surprised if they will be closing their doors sooner than later. I also have a friend whom uses their child care services and has recently told me that the woman they have hired to run this area is also rude, telling her one this well doing something completely different and talks down to not only her employs but also the parents that come in to talk to her. I am appalled by this YMCA and I do hope they get their act together, by cleaning house and offering some training to those whom should not have been hired as management in the first place. This review is not based on use of the gym itself. It is more based on the contradiction of values by the YMCA, a gym that prides itself on being family friendly. I drove 20 minutes with my son and young baby to arrive for my sons basketball practice, only to realize that it starts next week. (The emailed date by the ymca showed up split so it was confusing). My son was extremely disappointed and on the verge of tears. I asked if we could just shoot around in the gym for 10 minutes for the little guy, and my baby had just fallen asleep so it would help us out. She said no. Asked for a guest pass and she said no. Her blunt, "no-negotiation" attitude felt like a message from higher up... no guest passes and no free entries at all cost. I wish we could have felt some compassion today as paying customers of a ymca basketball league... makes me sad that the employee couldn't see it in her to help our family on this day. read more

I'm curious. Is it common practice to turn away special needs children from swim therapy that they not only paid for, but had already attended? It's unacceptable that my son's Occupational Therapy worked with you for months so that he and other children with special needs like him would be able to attend aquatic therapy, only for an "aquatic director" (who refused to return any phone calls during the process- 25 calls with only TWO returned?)to tell his therapist when she ARRIVED today, 5 minutes before we did, that they're not allowed. They are not in anyone's way, they don't impede on classes, and regardless of your reasoning the way that this has been handled has been beyond unacceptable. Beyond that, he had ALREADY attended a session last week, with no issues prior to that whatsoever (besides the gross lack of communication on the part of your staff). It breaks my heart that an organization that prides itself on being nonprofit is so exclusive- and if it was a matter of someone's "pride", please keep in mind that the only person who is being punished is my 3 year old disabled toddler. Unfortunately, this is not the first time we have dealt with this level of ignorance from a group who prides themself on their community presence. I think the people of Milwaukee would like to know where their donations are going if it is not going where it should- the youth. We will not be returning in the future. During quarantine they continued to charge me for over 6 months when I was caring for a sick family member in another state. I was calling and begging them to cancel and always getting a call back on Fridays, juuuust before they closed for the weekend. How convenient when THEY KNEW I am calling to cancel. Finally I get this elusive late Friday afternoon caller on the phone that IS able to cancel it on the phone. And does. So that CAN happen. They later told me I can only do it online but she did it on the phone. Then they start charging me again starting in January. I hadn't actually been in that building for over a year. Not even in the same damn state. I call on a Saturday and am told I can only leave a voicemail because it's a Saturday and there is no one I can talk to. I'm agitated, naturally, as I have now been charged $350 in months I have been wanting to cancel. I ask that they please, please get AN ACTUAL PERSON, for once, as this was roughly my 7th or 8th time trying to get a hold of someone. The girl on the phone then just straight up hangs up on me. Like a 5 year old. Not a joke. Oh and a person WAS able to talk because she called me about two minutes later. So there, that's it, THAT is what they are. They offered no compensation, NO APOLOGY even. Just nothing. They are creating a healthy mind? How?? Charging people when they aren't coming and then acting as if you are a pain in their ass?? Is there a negative stars option on this? I have never even wrote a Yelp review before but this, but this I felt compelled to do. They don't give a shit anymore. I want to start by saying I hate this place. Every staff member(except 1 manager) that I've come into contact with have been rude. The main issue I have is in regards to towel service. I purchased towel service at the Rite-Hite YMCA, and West Suburban won't honor it. Every time I ask for a towel they give me attitude. They want me to pay $.50 for a towel. How petty is that? I've been told " Well you don't belong to this YMCA." Isn't the YMCA a christian organization? Yet their staff members have made it clear that I'm not one of them (Not very christian like). I am a Milwaukee card holding member but haven't had any poor treatment by staff. I was disappointed when I attempted to bring a guest and was turned away, even though my guest might have become a potential member. The young person following directions to the letter, failed to ask. We left to drive a distance to a Mke ymca location. I come to 124th because it's closer to where I live now and mostly use the pool. I was taking a "Raise the Bar" class on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Loved the positive vibe of the instructor who introduced me to the regulars and encouraged me to come back. I had one bad experience in the class when things went sour between myself and a regular. A woman who was very territorial. I was late to my 3rd class and began to set up my equipment about 10 feet behind her. She had ample room in front but insisted Ibmove further back. As I turned to get my weights from the rack behind me, she physically moved my belongings. I was nowhere near her and would now be in the path of anyone returning equipment. She was most unfriendly. thisbbothered me. At the end of the next class the instructor again asked that people greet each other. I greeted her and mentioned our first encounter. She immediately became combative. The last thing I remember saying to her was that " this is why we don't take these classes, (we) feel unwelcome when others become territorial. By "we" I meant the ones like myself who are new to gym culture or reluctant to take a group class. As I exited the class, she stood talking to a couple and I heard her say "Blacks can do anything nowadays...move anywhere!" And then looked in my direction directly after. Facility is clean and up to date by way of numerous renovations and the latest equipment but this Y offers so much more than a typical health club. It provides a very safe and family friendly environment where everyone is welcome. Terrible customer service, Lazy staff, lazy director Kim Sippls, passive-aggresive safeguards, unexperienced swim teachers who are working with 4-6 year olds. While Marketing director Sarah Millard is looking for better ways of attracting the customers, the Business Service director (Kim Sippls) is trying fo get rid of as many customers as possible. The whole facility is working against each other as a disfunctional mechanism. As soon as you enter the facility you can see that nobody is smiling at the reception desk. They all look very relaxed and some of them has very weird expression on their faces (as if they just woke up) or eating something. I signed up my daughter for swimming class Pike 1. In the first day safeguard told me that I cannot use women's locker and i should use either guest locker or Moms&Daughters locker room. Pike 1 class was fun but almost every day teacher got out of the pool first and let little kids stay in a water without supervision and any floating devices. As a result of it my daughter dived down and it was shocking that this had happened. There is no any valid program that would allow to bring more kids or families into the facility. You cannot buy (or sign up) just for one day class or visitation if you are not a member. Locker rooms are very cold and there are no hair dryers...there is only one hand dryer that I used as a hair dryerm for my daughter. Sucks, the whole facility sucks, including directors and teachers..... There are better options in the area. Or get ready for cheap irritable experience.
