Visiting Milwaukee on business, looking for a place to lift, the first time I walked into Animal House Gym, someone said I looked like a kid in a candy store -- and they weren't wrong. My eyes lit up, my heart raced, and I'm pretty sure I drooled a little. A real old school gym surrounded me, but with cutting edge equipment and enough iron to build a battleship. The equipment selection? Immaculate. The vibe? Like Rocky, Thor, and a grizzly bear opened a training center together. The community? Friendly savages. And I mean that in the highest regard. If your idea of fun is grinding out sets next to beasts who treat lifting like religion, welcome home. If not, Planet Fitness is only about 5 miles away. I started going here in 2018 and took a long hiatus until December 2022, but so happy I returned. I have a trainer, but come here even on my off days to work out here. Everyone is welcoming and friendly, especially the owners. They have plenty of machines so I'm never just standing around waiting and lots of free weights too and plenty of cardio equipment. Been going for the past year and a half. Amazing "crew" (which is 5-6 dogs). Amazing atmosphere but can get a little overwhelming during peak hours. Amazing for price. Came into town for a week to visit family and needed a gym to go to. Went to Animal House and it's easily my favorite gym I've been to. I was in town on business and was looking for a great gym... and I found it. As you drive down the street, you get increasingly worried that your car may not be safe when you finally find the gym, but that's Milwaukee for you. Walking in, you look down a long hallway and simultaneously the smell of sweat hits your nostrils and the clanging of barbell plates hits your eardrum. The hallway opens up to approximately 7,500 square feet, and by square, I mean square; no sectioned off rooms or studios, just 7,500 square feet of lifting space. As you turn to the right, you see a small sales counter that probably has one of the owners sitting at the desk (Karen and John) and a number of huge lovable dogs laying on the floor or under the display cases. I asked for a day pass and it was $5... that wasn't a typo, a $5 day pass is unheard of! The locker rooms are small and smell of sweat and urine, but in an endearing way that you imagine Gold's Gym at Muscle Beach must have smelled like with Arnold, Lou Ferrigno, and Frank Zane training there in their heyday. The equipment is mostly Body Masters with a dose of Hammer Strength thrown in and it's all red and gray, which adds to the badassery of this gym. While most gyms have went to rubberized dumbbells and barbell plates to reduce noise, the dumbbells and barbell plates at Animal House are old school metal with no rubber edges so you constantly hear the clanging of iron instead of the chatter of voices. And speaking of voices, you don't hear many of them at Animal House. It's not a pickup gym like so many fitness facilities have become; it is a true gym for serious athletes. That doesn't mean you have to be an elite athlete to train here, but it does mean that you have to be serious about why you're there. Women throw their hair back and grunt while lifting, men drip in sweat, there is a sign that reads "Deodorant is Mandatory"... that's the kind of gym this is. And it's heaven. In my gym, I feel like I am in the top 5-10% strength-wise, even though I'm 6'3" so weight is heavier to move when you have longer limbs. At this gym, I was in the middle of the pack and it motivated me to have a better workout than I'd had in several months. I was inspired to do my best by all the hard-working hardbodies around me. My only regret is that the day I went to Animal House was shoulder day for me. If it was leg day, I would have been able to crush myself in the squat racks, leg presses, and various other stations that surely would have left me hobbling out the door, loving every step. The owner said he's moving to a better location in about four months. That should take care of the smell, but I hope they don't lose the authentic vibe. read more

I read the reviews to this place and I still felt like I was taking a gamble checking this place out, so let me tell you exactly what's going on here! Free Weight: Dumbells range from 5lbs to 140lb dumbbells Cardio: there are a good amount of options Locker rooms: Are very clean and this place takes pride in how clean it is!! There are a ton of Hammer Strength equipment here!! Supplements/clothing: He has top of the line product to purchase before and after not to mention they have animal house clothing...Cool stuff to!! I lived in Wisconsin for 13yrs and trained/worked out of Animal House for 12yrs. This gym is by far the best bodybuilding and weight lifting gym I've ever been to. I've been to many gyms during my 22yrs of training and none have ever compared to Animal House. Their equipment is always well maintained and if something malfunctions John gets it fixed immediately. No more waiting for weeks for a machine to get fixed. I currently live in Orlando (about 6 months now) and have been to 3 gyms so far and none of them compare to AH. Machines have been broken for weeks, the cable machines have rope for the pullies instead of an actual Cable which doesn't feel smooth and the resistance isn't even during the movement. John and Karen go out of their way to keep AH in great working order and you have all the machines and weights you'll ever need to build your best body. Give Animal House a try- you won't regret it. read more

I visited a couple different gyms/health clubs after finally getting fed up with the decline of the Bally/Blast locations because I wanted to make sure I found the right home for me. I decided on Animal House and couldn't be happier. I've been working out here for the last couple of months. It's an old school gym in every sense. Privately owned and the personal touch is evident in all aspects. It has the best selection of weight equipment I've found in the area. While a lot of clubs shy away from weight training in general, the larger dumbbells, deadlifts, etc. this gym embraces whatever you want to do from basic healthy living to cross-fit to bodybuilding and powerlifting. The members are fantastic, as well. Everyone I've met there seems to be dedicated to their goals and works hard when they enter the facility. I personally find it quite inspirational to look around a gym and see a bunch of people that make me say to myself "Holy crap, look at that guy/girl...wow" , and after 25 years as a gym rat, I'm not easily impressed for what it's worth.....not worth much, huh? Gotcha ;) On top of that, gym etiquette is followed to a tee, equipment is kept clean, weights are put away and that type of respect for each other is refreshing. They have a number of personal trainers that I believe are independent contractors that use the facility with their clients. I've chatted with a couple while working out but haven't really used the services so you're on your own with that. But, they seem knowledgeable and their own personal fitness results are hard to argue. You're not going to find group classes or a swimming pool here, so if that's your thing this won't be the place for you. Like I said earlier, it's an old school gym. So, if you're looking for a great place to workout and a motivating, friendly environment regardless of your fitness level I highly recommend it. read more

This West Coast Cali girl is completely smitten with this "real" gym, with two great people-John and Karen, running it. If you're a serious body builder looking for a place to get your muscle on, or if you're just a person, like me, who likes to work out in a clean, positive space, without all the fluff, that has plenty of free weights(as well as cardio and machines) to go around, this is it. Another bonus, which you may find humorous, is the fabulous amount of gym wear they sell, with their charming name/ logo on it. I bought some. My husband bought some. We bought more as gifts, which everyone loved, AND wears, and then had the wonderful Karen ship me more when I got home. I love strutting around my funky, hometown gym that I would never, ever consider advertising, with Animal House Gym emblazoned on my person. I recently moved from Virginia and my boyfriend, who is an independent personal trainer, brought me to AHG. I couldn't be happier. The gym is where I feel happiest and this place has all the equipment that I need AND it's all in good condition. Boyfriend and I are also bodybuilders so it's really cool to see others like us in the gym. My gym back home was a lot like this, however I recommend AHG to anyone looking for weights, cardio equipment, machines. Added bonus, they have this super fluffy dog (pyrenees?), 2 adult bernese mountain dogs and recently adopted a puppy bernese that usually great you when you sign in at the front desk. I waked into Animal House 10 years ago a very fat female weighing in at 316 lbs. Well I am not fat now and much more fit than my peers. I am about to turn 60 though you wouldn't know. This place saved my life, saved me from years of pain and disease, and saved me from being on a scooter. The people that own Animal House are simple wonderful. They work so hard to keep the gym in great shape. The members too are unbelievably kind and supportive. All of them have been so encouraging. I have had three trainers and all have been good and all have had slightly different approaches. I never would have made it without these men who took me from a limping bad backed person to a much improved model. They all took great care to work with me to rehabilitate whatever hasn't worked be it my knees or back. I work with Henry now and I can't say enough about how skilled he is and about how hard he works to save me from myself. I just adore him. read more
