I needed a night away to decompress and wanted to do some serious shelling. Shortly after booking a room thru some online discount website, thinking I had just got a decent rate on a hotel, a nice woman with West Wind called me and informed me that I had been grossly over charged. They could have easily just pocketed the money, but they didn't. It was a pain canceling and rebooking directly with them, but they did their best to help me and even called to update me of the process along the way, reassuring me that no matter what, they were holding my room. So the hotel is an older one, but still nice. Everything seemed clean, but I did bring Clorox wipes to wipe down high touch surfaces, mostly to help me feel more comfortable with choosing to "vacation" during Covid. Staff all wore masks, but reassured guests wearing masks that they didn't need to. We still wore ours when encountering others in close proximity. I was honestly shocked with how people crammed into the pool, bar, and restaurant...not a mask to be seen. We chose to only go swim and I grabbed a drink from the bar when it was empty. Social distancing is definitely not enforced so we just chose to do what we feel best to protect ourselves. Our room was simple, yet pleasant. The view from our screened in patio was amazing and what I enjoyed most. The bathroom is tiny, but nice with a spacious shower taking up half the space. The small fridge had to be turned up and took some time to be cold enough to hold the food and drinks we had brought in our cooler. The wall unit AC did a decent job keeping our room cool but is a tad noisy, especially when out on your balcony. It also kicks up some heat on the balcony, so we just turned it off when we wanted to enjoy a little time out there. The beds were comfy, as were the pillows, and I appreciated the extra blankets that were placed in the closet, along with extra pillows. I was pretty annoyed that there were no outlets around either bed to plug in phones and devices. Staff was all super friendly and accommodating. I checked out over the phone to help minimize personal contact, and 24 hours later, I still have not received the emailed receipt they promised. According to my account statement, I still have not been refunded the extra amount that I paid for the room. So I may have to call soon and get someone to settle that. I will definitely stay here again, but next time I will directly book thru them. Sanibel has amazing shelling opportunities, and that's what I was really after. It was so nice to wake and walk right out onto the beach. West Wind seemed to be the last in a string of many rental properties, hotels, and a decent way away from any public beach access. So there were not many people on the beach, especially if you walked north. read more

Enjoyed a very relaxing stay at this resort with the exception of a non working toilet. Luckily the issue was resolved the next morning & the front desk also issued a gift card to the pool bar for our trouble. Overall the staff was very friendly & welcoming I especially Love that it was so pet friendly. Our suite had a private screened in patio with rocking chairs where we could relax & enjoy the view in between activities. The room itself wasn't exactly new or modern looking but who cares when the view is so nice We will definitely stay again on our next getaway to Sanibel read more

Came to the West Wind Inn in a last minute spur of the moment weekend trip. I've never been to Sanibel but I saw the google reviews and pictures and I was sold. The price for two nights was reasonable and even though I'm more used to the bigger name chain hotels I decided to give this one a try. I was pleasantly surprised. The grounds were clean and the staff were very friendly. Check in was a breeze even though we arrived close to midnight. The front desk staff called within five minutes of our arrival to see if the room was to our liking. I was really impressed by their courtesy. Our room was cute and most importantly clean. I slept like a baby that night. The next day we walked onto the beach which is literally steps from our room. We collected sea shells and just enjoyed the relaxing views. This resort is the perfect place to just relax. It had an old charm to it that I appreciated and I definitely want to experience again. We took advantage of their free bike rentals and enjoyed biking around Sanibel. Can't wait to venture back. read more

Old world charm abounds on Sanibel, and the same is true at West Wind! The exterior is 'upscale 60's motorcourt' but it is located in a premium stretch of private beach. The cobblestone parking area full of expensive cars lets you know that the historic look belies premium rents - like an aging monied cougar! Our 'gulf-front room' was well worth the extra $; we could see and hear the ocean all day & night! Large walk-in shower was nice, and there were several places to wash sand off of our feet when returning to our room. The private screened-in patio really made our room homey, as did the small 'fridge and microwave! The pool area is very nice, and the pool-side bar is excellent. On-site food consisted of upscale Normandie restaurant, or more casual food (from same kitchen) served at poolside bar. Shuffle board and corn-hole games rounded oit the pool area. Pros: Steps form the beach, kayaks and paddle boards no charge, good location, nice pool area. The room was clean. The staff courteous and friendly. Cons: The property seriously needs to be updated. We stayed in room 116. The TV is small and the room is old. The stair wells are filthy, paint is peeling off the walls of our lanai area, the lanai screen cage are old and pitted. The slider door was a bear to open and close and the screws on the lock are loose. The internet signal was extremely weak and I couldn't stream anything. There was a couple a couple doors away that wore the same cloths every time I saw them, I'm no snob but they didn't seem to be guests. Perhaps the maintenance man and his wife or the property accepts welfare people and gets paid by the state. I may have overlooked a lot of these things but the charge for Saturday night 9/17/22 was $329.00, I expect more for over $300. read more

Bathtub had two inches of sandy water in it when we arrived. See photos of other bathroom issues. Housekeeping never cleaned room after our arrival despite repeated requests. Only upside was location but with dead fish all over the beach even that was ruined. A Motel 6 would have been a step up. read more

West Wind Inn was our home away from home for a weekend getaway to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Everyone there was very accommodating, friendly, efficient. The check in process was seamless. We were told that we had access to bicycles to explore the island and paddle boards to use during our stay for free. We were also told that there was free coffee at the registration area and we were given a booklet of coupons to use fo discounts around the Inn like the restaurant and other promotions going at the shops in town. Our hotel room was very neat and tidy. It was the perfect size just for the two of us. There was a mini fridge and a microwave for us to use and also a keurig with coffee pods, sugar, cups, and half and half. We also had extra amenities so we didn't have to call housekeeping for extra towels, pillows, blankets. I really enjoyed the screened in porch so we can enjoy the ocean views from our room where we were protected from bugs while we ate our breakfast and even to watch the sunset from our porch. The Normandie restaurant had an amazing staff and amazing good. They checked our temperature prior to being seated and you needed to be masked before entering to keep everyone safe. Most of our trip was spent just relaxing on the beach and looking for awesome shells. We took a bike ride to JN Ding Darling using the bikes from the hotel and did the 8 mile course. Over all the trip was just what we needed to get away from crazy busy Miami. Thank you to the staff that made our trip so amazing. read more

OK. Drop what you are doing and book a room at this wonderful, friendly resort just 180 steps from the private beach! Sanibel is the place to rest and recharge. If you want nightlife, stay in Fort Myers! My daughter and I stayed one week. We tried other beaches on Sanibel and Captiva but nothing could hold up to our private beach at West Wind! Shelling is amazing and wild dolphins were spotted off shore. Bring beach shoes! We stopped at Publix and bought beach chairs and supplies. I had packed a folding cooler. The studio room was an ideal size and I cooked most days in an effort to eek out more beach time! We never put the TV on! The outside bar and pool are gorgeous. We will be back. read more

Location is perfect as we prefer the quiet side of the island. Small motel with direct access to the beach and the lighter travelled bike path. Ding Nature Reserve is a few pedals away and offers a wonderful ride. We have been to the island on and off for 28 years and West Wind is our go to but it is showing its age. Although a current furniture (dressers) seems to be happening, there needs to be a total room overall. The water pressure in the shower was weak, doors need repainting, towels were scratchy, and the pillows were horrible! Staff is ALWAYS gracious and helpful. Our little place is showing some age and hopefully a bit of "nip/tuck" attention will refresh. We'll be back for the laid back beach life we enjoy. read more

We did t have an oven or stove but didn't need one. Only here for two might. Lots of fun things to do on the property. Has shuffle board, corn hole, giant connect four, giant chess and checkers. And free bikes. Ocean front. Didn't see the sunset last night. We got here late. But looking forward to it tonight. They have live music at the pool bar from 5-7:30. Will update on that later. Not super fancy, but beautiful inn, right on the Gulf of Mexico on a 500-foot beach in Sanibel known for its fantastic shelling. It's located in a lovely, quiet neighborhood. Nice ambiance. Our Gulf Frimt room had 2 beds, full kitchen, screened in patio with rocking chairs where we could hear the waves. Also really enjoyed the pool area w/ big pool deck, and views out toward shuffleboard, the lawn, and the beach. Also liked that they have a pool bar- the Upper Deck, serving casual food and drinks, and nice restaurant - Normandie Seaside Cafe, right on site. Free coffee in the lobby, and you can rent beach chairs or bicycles. I rented a bike and ride 15 hours, all over the island. A highlight of my trip. Service was very friendly, too. Thanks! read more

Honestly I was very pleased with our two night stay at West Wind. The hotel is nice, the room was very clean, and it has a very nice pool area with onsite bar. Comfy king size bed and large TV. The drinks and food at the bar were very good. Service was nice, and the rates were reasonable, especially considering location and the fact that we stayed Friday-Sunday, and I booked the room only two days in advance. Will gladly consider staying here again on our next trip to Sanibel, which I hope will be soon, once the covid-19 situation cools off this summer (we hope..) read more

It was easy to give this little hidden gem of a resort a 5. From the time my friend and I checked in we have been nothing but happy. We are in an Ocean view room with the swimming pool view as well. They were specific when we booked that it was not an ocean "front" room so we knew what to expect. The view is beautiful. We can see the beach and moon from a very nice screened in patio. Our room has a kitchenette. We have prepared all our meals here. There is plenty of kitchenware to get together a meal. They also provide dish soap and dish towels. You will need to bring your own paper towels. The property is older but the rooms have been remodeled and they are immaculate. The beds are just fine in room 245. They are firm but not so firm that either one of us are complaining about an aching back. A good bed and a good nights sleep should be the goal of all hotels for their guest. I'm sleeping great! The pool is heated for winter months. Here it is almost Thanksgiving and we have been out swimming in the pool. I love this place. We are right at the beach. An easy walk from your room. It's private. Not a lot of people. Quiet and great for a long needed vacation from my last vacation. read more

Do not stay at West Wind on Sanibel It pains me to write that, even to say outloud, but it's not the same place that we've stayed at for 8 years and spent close to 25k in room costs alone. Besides the free coffee for eight years, that stopped, now, because it was a "promotion", their customer service is just horrible. Literally. Every time we arrive, we're asked "have you stayed here before?". We've been here six times in the last year. They should know that. They put us in room (booked five months in advance) that looks out at a wall. As far as we could tell, it's the only room with that view. We brought this to the front desk persons attention and she agreed, and said that she would see what she could do. We never heard from her. Not even to say there was nothing that she could do. They fired their best bartender and key staff has left or are planning to. We love Sanibel, we have found a different place to stay and, hopefully, one that appreciates their guests and their return. read more

This review is for the Normandie resturant. The Normandie has THE BEST BREAKFAST ON THE ISLAND! This spot is a little hidden on the hotel's property but worth searching out. It is a cute little spot with great service. Their pecan pancakes are always ordered for the table no matter what else we decide to get! I also love their croissant breakfast sandwiches and home fries. On this last trip I recently heard they are remodeling the Normandie resturant, I am nervous of this and hope that the cuteness doesnt get cut out of it! read more

Stayed here for the first time in Mid July 2018. I had stayed in other places in Sanibel (which easily became my favorite beach destination back in 2010), but wanted to give West Wind a shot. Our room was nice and clean with an angular view of the Gulf. The staff/office folks were friendly and accommodating. Despite the Gulf's beauty and fun, it is like warm bath water in July and doesn't offer much in refreshment when wading. This is where a nice swimming pool is CRUCIAL in order to help cool down. The pool area itself was clean, well-kept, and had a nice deep end. Even though my girlfriend and I are in our 40s, we are like children when it comes to having fun in the pool. We are not the timid type that just hang out on the sides. We spent a lot of time there swimming and splashing and enjoyed some nice tropical cocktails poolside. We also enjoyed the bike rental offering on-site. We like to stay active so we took advantage of this. The only thing I really didn't like was the "resort fee" we were hit with since we did not book directly through West Wind. Maybe that's a common thing but it sucks and doesn't leave a friendly taste in your mouth in terms of returning. We gave them our business ( which isn't cheap) and got dinged extra charges for not booking directly through them. Come on!! I'm on the fence about returning. read more

We stayed here for a week. Wonderful place. Clean and sound proof rooms. Bed was comfy and staff was very friendly and helpful. Housekeeping kept leaving us extra towels every day even when we had the privacy sigh out. My only wish is that there were paths to the beach. There were paths to the pool and once you got off the grass there was the typical beach trail but nothing across the grass to the Beach area. I felt odd like I was cutting across the grass where I shouldn't be. Overall this place was amazing and has even more potential. I would recommend to anyone and really hope I get to come visit again soon!!! read more

Here is my review: - My 93 year old mother had a reservation at this resort in 2020. My brother was going to escort her. Then Covid hit. It has not been safe for her to travel. We called on her behalf and were told they would extend her $479.00 credit until Spring 2022. So she is starting to get a little weaker and we thought best to take her now or never. She really just wants to pick up shells off the beach one more time. My sister and myself both made reservations for this December. My son helped my mom call in to transfer her existing credit to the reservations (her choice) and she was told her credit had expired. They took her money. I then called in and tried to resolve this in a civilized manner as my mom is so upset by this. I spoke to Dawn Waterstein , who represented herself as a manager, and she didn't seem to see an issue with taking her money. It is really sad that a representative of an organization would treat a 93 year old this way anytime but especially during a pandemic that had her on lockdown in her home for almost 2 years. Perhaps they don't want the elderly at this resort. Now I will still take my mom to Sanibel to pick up shells but unless this issue is resolved we will not stay at this facility, now or ever. As a matter of fact we will not stay at any properties owned by Sanibel Captiva Beach Resorts. We will instead choose a business that practices with morals and who respect their elders. Dawn did not, almost laughing at one point and telling me it's our fault for waiting too long and how time flys.........unforgivable really. I hope that SCBR's is smart enough to make some changes in their reservations dept. I travel around the world and have never felt it necessary to write a review like this. Support our elderly. -First, what could have been better. The room definitely needed to be painted. There were screws in the wall where paintings used to be, there was a wrought iron porch that was screened in and was in desperate need of painting. It feels like it would not have taken much effort to fix the minor flaws. I have to ask, completely rhetorically at this point, was that part of it not costing an extremely high amount to have it need some little things? -The good things and there were many, but the number one thing was the view. We were in one of the 20 "Gulf Facing" units in the WWI. Some of the units had lousy views and I would suggest getting the Gulf Facing if you can. It was incredible to get up in the morning and be 50 yards or so from the ocean (30 or so yards from the beach) with a completely unobstructed view. To get up in the middle of the night and slip out on the balcony and have nothing between you and the sea breeze. It was really nice. -The staff was wonderful. We got there a bit before check in and they took my number and said they would call me when the room was ready. Made me feel very welcome and very accommodating. -We hung out at the outside bar by the pool and listened to some pretty decent music, especially the Friday night performer. Also spend some time around the pool and it was well maintained and clean. -Also would recommend getting the beach set up, they put out two chairs and an umbrella for $20/day. Nice to go to the beach and not have to lug anything down there but beverages. - Would recommend going to their site to book and not using one of the travel sites. I stayed 5 nights and it was off season, but it was under 300 per night before taxes and with that unobstructed view of the Gulf it seemed like a good deal. I do recall it would have been more using one of the travel sites. -This isnt like a resort where people are walking around asking if you need something. But if you are hungry at poolside for example, walk up the bar and your food will show up fairly quickly. -The room itself was clean and the cleaning person was very nice, asked us what we needed and kept the room clean. The bed was much harder than I prefer but I know thats all personal preference. -The room also had a small kitchen and it made it very nice to cook breakfast if we didnt feel like going out to a restaurant. As an aside about breakfast, you have to do one breakfast at the Lighthouse Cafe. -The WWI perfectly fit our needs, we were looking for a place that was all about the beach and had good service. We have been on many ocean front vacations and have never been closer to the ocean. If thats what you are looking for, the WWI is your jam! We will be back. read more

What a great little place for a nice, quiet getaway. The inn is located right on the beach, perfect for finding shells, and has a great pool with full bar and food, the Upper Deck. They have happy hour during the week and great entertainment. Jeff Lyons was great! The pool has nice lounge chairs and umbrellas, and they provide towels. They also have shuffleboard and corn-hole. The staff was very nice and friendly. Our room had a nice pool view and a nice little screened in patio with a couple of chairs. The rooms have been recently renovated and the beds are super comfy! Our room had a kitchenette stocked with enough to prepare our own meals. The inn does have a full restaurant onsite, Normandie Cafe which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can also reserve beach chairs and umbrella through the inn. One less thing to worry about when going to the beach. Overall, this is a great place to stay when visiting Sanibel. It's very quiet and has a full restaurant onsite and bar in the pool area. It even has a nice little koi pond near the office. You can also rent bikes to cruise along the island. We stayed 5 nights at this resort and had a King room with a gulf view. They list these room very strangely, by saying "gulf or garden view" and they just put you wherever. So the gulf view is just along the side of the property in which the way the building is built, you can see the gulf. In other words the building isn't perfectly perpendicular to the shoreline. So just be aware that you're gulf view room won't be "gulf front", but it is in fact a "view". Additionally, they also call this "ocean" view....this property is on the gulf, not the ocean. With that out of the way, our room left a lot to be desired but in the same breath we would go back. We felt that the bathroom was entirely too small. The shower door and the bathroom door opened back to back and if one was open, the other couldn't be open. Not to mention the toilet was in between the doors. There was an effort made in this room to update to a more modern look, but they are just so small that its hard to notice the updates due to how inconvenient it was to get around the space. The bed was hard as a rock and lumpy-presumably from bodies having layed on it, there are body impressions in the mattress. It had a small porch, only had room for 2 chairs and a small side table which was all that was needed really, but the screening made it difficult to look out onto the gulf because of how the screen was assembled, the piece of hardware that joins the 2 panels of screen was right in the line of sight for us. So we were a little sad that we had to slouch down to look out. Not a huge deal though. Overall, the hotel wasn't a fancy resort, its grounds were meticulous and the pool area was very well maintained. I cant rave enough about how nice the area was. The hotel and the rooms are a little dated but it didn't feel slummy or anything. We were comfortable and even with all of my gripes above, we would still come back and maybe just book a larger room. read more

West Wind is a great property with a great location. I had several friends and family members stay at West Wind for my Wedding in 2016 and they all enjoyed it! The West Wind Inn is located in a great location, and has a wonderful pool and restaurant BUT the staff are not friendly, the beds are very uncomfortable, the bathrooms are tiny & the air conditioning is VERY loud. I stayed here in October and November 2016 but if you want some sleep, stay elsewhere as the air conditioning and bed will keep you awake. I spoke to the manager on duty (Jefferson) and also the General Manager (Brett Gooch) and neither care about a guests concerns or correcting things. It's a shame that the property could be five star, but management refuses to take guest complaints seriously or remedy the issues. In addition, be prepared to pay $20 per day (till 5pm only) for 2 chairs and an umbrella....note that most times of the year to see the sunset you will be standing or sitting on a towel and be prepared the wifi is free, but never works! read more

Great location! Love the kitschy sculptures and the room we stayed in had a great view of the beach from our balcony. There is a koi pond. The deck bar pool was wonderful. Kids can get virgin daiquiris---my tot loved the mango while I sipped on a Caribbean Passion. The living quarters were simple and understated, and has a built a kitchen if you wish to cook. It is definitely quiet but waking up to enjoy the view of dolphins swimming early in the morning, walking along the beach for shells, and enjoying sunsets was well worth it. BTW, their restaurant, The Normandie, was a throwback hotel restaurant. No lines, no frills, and it was a lot LESS for what you would get into the major traffic restaurants that we visited for breakfast. read more

This resort location was exactly as what we had planned. On the beach and short walk with beautiful sunsets. Original stay was planned for 4 days here, however decided to stay for the duration of our 10 day vacation. It was low season and therefore rates were very reasonable. Very friendly staff and Normandie restaurant was a great onsite dining spot for our Thanksgiving stay over. Pool bar also offered great food and beautiful evening setting. Arrived here during Labor Day weekend for one night. We were initially going to share a room with another couple to save costs but since we mentioned there were two tiny toddlers with us, they counted them as extra people and therefore forced us to get another room. When I worked at the MARRIOTT down in Miami for 5 years we never counted babies or toddlers as extra people. That whole shpiel about it being a fire hazard or whatever is bull and I know it's just to nickel and dime us. So for those of you coming to this resort and wanting to do the same thing remember, don't mention you have toddlers traveling with you! It'll save you hundreds of dollars! Which in my opinion $155 a night is a little outrageous for what you get. Maybe $100 would have been reasonable. Also beware! The connecting room doors are thin and noise seeps through the cracks. We found this out when our latin neighbors in room 215 began talking loud at midnight and they let their children bump and knock on the connecting door all night. I called the front desk, lady working there was nice and tried to rectify the situation but sometimes latin people don't take kindly to being told what to do so our awesome neighbors began to play salsa music very loud at 1am. Thankfully the cops came and told them to keep it down or get kicked out. Beach facing the property was okay, very murky which would be ideal territory for sharks, and at night the no see ums will eat you alive. All in all I wish this could have turned out better. I've been coming to the WWI on and off since 1991. And for a couple of years we came here about one weekend a month when we lived in Miami, even saw the last shuttle launch from the beach one midnight. Unlike boring chain hotels, there was never a 'Welcome back blah blah blah' when we would check in which added to the character of the place. I took it to mean they weren't dependent on repeat business, and that may still be true today. We have watched it transform from a cheap and cheerful motel (about Motel 6 level) with rough charm to a more expensive and serious place with less character. It's been under new management for a couple of years, has been tarted up tastefully and the AC works. But WWI now feels more like a boutique hotel - which is OK - but without the boutique hotel service ethic. II was pretty disappointed the complementary bikes are now $15/day each (though Bob the manager comped us a couple after I moaned for long enough). Happily there's nothing much in the way of entertainment for kids in Sanibel, so the beaches are almost family free. For peace and quiet in Florida, Sanibel must be one of the few places to go. If the front desk staff weren't so confrontational (tolerable when it was cheap, less so today) I'd rate it 5 stars. read more

Stayed here for the weekend with family and ended up renting 3 rooms. Overall the hotel was great, well kept, clean and nice pool. Decent location away from the crowds but close enough to restaurants, grocery store etc. The beach is close, just steps away from most of the rooms. The rooms are fine, comfortable beds and have microwaves, bar fridges and a small sink. We made sure to reserve a room with a full size stove and fridge. The bathrooms are tiny and cramped though, you have to close the door before you can can step out of the bathtub/shower stall. The beach itself is quite rocky and full of shells, so while great for souviner hunters, not so great for us tender-foots! read more

This modest beach resort offers attention to details that effect a most pleasant environment, good value, details are well attended and rooms well thought out. The on site restaurant is well staffed and offers descent cuisine and a full bar. The beach is very accessible and clean. Note: They are really targeting couples, but are polite enough to accept anyone. read more

Good a good deal on Hotwire for a couple nights (too short!). Great location - right on the beach and convenient for sightseeing, older hotel, but rooms was nicely decorated, clean and roomy, had a mini-fridge and microwave. The balcony was nice, but a little too hot for August. Staff was pleasant and helpful. Really liked the upper deck bar; did not have a chance to get to the pool, although it looked nice. Enjoyed exploring Captiva and Sanibel, shelling and cute shops. Go to Shelling Museum before you go shelling. I stopped at the Edison/Ford Winter Estates on way back and was very interesting. read more
