A park on the former site of a mental institution??? I had to check it out as soon as I heard that!…read moreOpen about ten days, this cute, 256-acre park certainly has a rich and storied past. The tract of land started off as three private farms in the 19th century. Those properties were purchased by the state of New Jersey in 1898 to establish the New Jersey State Village for Epileptics. In 1952, it was converted into the New Jersey Neuropsychiatric Institute, and in the 1970's into a center for those with mental and developmental disabilities. Sadly, none of the 100+ state buildings stand today. Much of the land had become an environmental brownfield over the last century. That has now been fully remediated. The only visible remnant from its institutional past is the layout of the idyllic 2-mile, tree-lined, paved trail that's built along the original road. That layout dates back to 1901! So now that the crumbling buildings and wastelands are gone, what will you actually find when you visit? An easy-to-navigate, system of scenic flat trails, almost all paved, that meanders through a combination of grasslands, light woods, and streams. In creating the landscaping, Somerset County Parks clearly attempted to make the area as pretty as possible, particularly along Rock Brook and its tributaries. Smack, dab, in the middle of the park, though, lies an elementary school. The largest parking lot in the park sits across from this school. Montgomery High School lies just outside the park's borders. This is my second visit. Both times, we were the only people on foot. Everyone else was a road cyclist. That may change as more people hear about the park. If you're looking for an easy 2-3 mile walk or run, try this little gem!

Everything seems pretty well maintained. Keeping it honest in my review, one thing I didn't like about Heavenly Farms was the air quality. At first I thought it was related to the Canadian wildfires but that shouldn't still be an issue now. I did a little more research and it seems the park is close to some warehouse distribution centers (O'Neill logistics, Creative logistics solutions) southwest of it in Monroe. I'm guessing the bad air I smell may be from idling trucks - google maps satellite view showed quite a lot of them less than a kilometer away.

Plus parking is easy and ample at all times. In addition, Crystal Springs (the waterpark/aquatic center in town) is right down the street so that helps out during a summer day, and the Complex is also really close. It gets 3 stars because while it is a very pretty park/area, it is more or less just green space. There's no wow factor, but it serves a nice purpose.

They have a great running trail with workout equipment along the way and a great park, picnic area and open space. While visiting NJ this weekend I took my dog here. He loved the opportunity to burn off some energy and play ball. The only complaint about this park which hasn't changed much is all the goose poop! Other than that, I will continue to bring my dog here when I visit and take the occasional run on the trail.

The trail even leads to the backside of Twin Rivers. A lot of people enjoy fishing at Etra Lake which is a decent sized lake adjacent to the park. There's three parking areas: one adjacent to the lake, one near the fields, and another large parking lot across the street. During non-Covid times, they usually host the East Windsor Fourth of July fireworks every summer and there's fun entertainment and food vendors. Overall a nice place to enjoy the outdoors!

The trails are multi use, and along with hikers, it's common to see people running, dog walking, biking, birding, or horseback riding. When there's enough snow, x-country skiers head there as well. If you're looking for swing sets and teeter totters for the rug rats, this is not the park you are looking for. The trails themselves run from gravel to paved to dirt, and they can get pretty muddy at times, but if the Shih Tzus can handle it, so can you.

Before the sunset spectacle we walked around the woods and checked out the other sights that the park has to offer. It's pretty great and extremely large. You can ride bikes, run, walk, birdwatch, etc. They even have bathrooms! Go have a picnic or something.

This "park" is comprised of 22 acres of land that the township bought from the owners of Kuser…read moremansion. The mansion was built in 1882 and is architecturally interesting, as are a few of the buildings. There is a tennis house that I would love to call my own( I have a thing for tiny houses) But as a township taxpayer I can't help feeling that this property is underutilized. There is a tiny playground that seems to be forgotten. An antique tennis court that appears not to have been played on for decades. A lawn bowling court that is meticulously groomed, but does anyone even know what lawn bowling is? And grape vines that are reverting back to their wild form. A few times a year there are tours of the mansion, and in the summer months there are some concerts near the very large gazebo. But this is not a park with much recreation going on. Not really advisable for walking or jogging unless you are within walking distance. Maybe a picnic spot if you live or work nearby. With all this land it would be nice to see some biking or walking trails, or an upgraded playground at least. Still, in a township where open spaces are evaporating, I guess it is good that this land was not sold to a developer. But for the amount of taxes that residents pay, it would be better to see this park become more utilitarian. It just squeaked in at 3 Yelps.

Joan was a first class tour guide - as was Stephanie who gave the upstairs tour. It's a beautiful house, built in the late 1800s, with many fascinating artifacts and pieces of furniture and the history of the house and the Kuser family are very well presented. I highly recommend a visit - not only to the house but also to the park which has a wndmill, fountain, clay tennis court built in 1912, caretakers home, carriage house, gazebo, laundry house and gardens. Finally got around to creating a review for Beech Woods Park. It's been around for way too long…read morenow, but I just haven't had the time until now to add a review here. When it comes to the Beekman Dr parks, Beech Woods is often known as the inferior sister to it's older sibling Veterans Park. Additionally, for longtime residents of South Brunswick Township, Beech Woods lives in infamy for a peculiar reason (won't get to it here). Veterans Park provides more from an entertainment perspective (Basketball court, big playground, expansive walking trail, large outdoor space, multipurpose court). Veterans Park is easy to walk to, if you live off Beekman Road. There's even public bathrooms. However, Beech Woods provides some distinct traits that Veterans Park doesn't have. One is that it's surrounded by trees. Trees that come in handy when you go on a walk and need some shade to protect yourself from the sweltering heat. Second is the the parking and flexibility allowed inside the park. There's plenty of parking spots and a decent sized gazebo + outdoor space where you can hold an outdoor party or BBQ without much issue. There's also a smaller playground for kids to play in too. Third is the walking trail. Due to the hilly terrain when entering the park, you get actually a complete experience walking around from the stop sign to all the way around the park. There's also a hidden trail for the adventurous in Timber Ponds that want to walk through Beech Woods from the development. But one cool advantage of this park is that it's a perfect place to practice driving. The terrain plus ample parking spots allows the young and inexperienced drivers to practice anything and everything, even parallel parking. That's one thing you can't get in Veteran's Park. So go enjoy and stay distanced!
