Located on The Headrow, the ve-in to this branch of The National Blood Service could not be more convenient. A friend and I braved the torrential weather recently, and headed straight for the jugular. The staff could not have been any more helpful or personable, conversation was the inverse of trying to draw blood from a stone. They utterly relaxed our minds during a process which can make the donor feel slightly vulnerable. On a previous occasion, I was informed that my blood flow was too slow, rendering my donation useless. Although the blame did not lie with them whatsoever, the staff were apologetic and appreciative of my efforts, encouraging me to return in the future to try again. I ask for your pity for making these abominable puns, but your support to go and donate to an extremely worthy cause.

It had been a little while since I last donated, and though I'm lucky enough to not get squeamish about the blood bit, I was a little bit nervous in general as I walked in. But it was a really easy experience and I recommend it for seasoned blood donors or for newbies wanting to give it a try. In particular, the staff are lovely and explain everything along the way. The lady who took my blood stayed with me the whole time and we had a great chat about animations - she was a right hoot. There is a little bit of form filling and a little interview at the beginning, as there always is, but it's as much for your benefit as theirs. The blood donation part only takes about 10 minutes and they give you tea and biscuits afterwards! Getting stabbed with a needle and having your life essence drained away is never going to be a barrel of laughs, but this is pretty much as close as you'll get. And you also get the side effect of feeling pretty darn good knowing you're saving lives in one simple step... which, you know, is kinda nice.

Your typical fire station that is present in every town…read more This service is located in Top Mossley and are operated by Greater Manchester Fire Service. They have around two trucks, which are modern and verrrrry fast! They take part in show and tells at school which I think is great especially to educate the young ones. But to be fair, adults need it too! They participate in local fairs where they bring the trucks and let children play and learn about the controls etc. I think firemen are underrated and in Mossley they are needed as we live in the hills and in hot summer months they have been known to catch fires. So they are our lifesavers.

During my second year of University, I completed a module about media and the law. My lecturer organised a trip to visit Leeds Magistrates Court, and it was utterly fascinating. Although I have no desire to ever work in a law related profession, being able to witness the intricacies of a court case was intriguing. It was not until our guide mentioned it that I discovered that members of the public can be present at certain hearings. Obviously the ones of a more sensitive nature, or if a case has received a large amount of press attention, are not available to be present at. Whilst there, I watched a trial which involved a drunken brawl between two men, and a woman who had been injured in an attempt to intervene. It was really interesting watching the whole process; the defence and prosecution in full swing, with witnesses giving their accounts of the incident. There was an aspect of pure enthralment about being present during a court case, it seems such a familiar setting due to films and television series. Obviously it is not somewhere that I visit regularly, I have only been once since University. But, if boredom or curiosity gets the better of you, visit this court to satisfy your urge.
