Today, I had my first appointment. Of course, there was a lot of paperwork ahead of time. Two other people had appointments around the same time after the staff returned from lunch. They went ahead of me. After a half hour or so, Ingrid came to take x-ray shots. It was somewhat difficult for me to open my mouth so wide but we got through it. Contrast that to another office in town where it seemed she had to take hundreds of images to get enough that were good. I was transferred to the dentist. It's somewhat private, not like the old style dental facilities but also not like one in Florida where there were six or seven of us side-by-side in a row of chairs. We talked about my situation and I explained a few things about my history with dentists. The dentist was surprised, but she was young and probably hadn't met bad dentists all that often. She went through the teeth and analyzed the problems, which were recorded by another person. After this process, she explained what could be done from fillings and extractions to implants and partial plates. I need a lot of work. This person who helped her record the analysis took me to her office. We discussed potential cost and how much Medi-Cal would pay. She put in the request for the deep cleaning and other procedure to be approved. She explained the prices, which of course, were not easy to accept, but understandable. She mentioned payment plans. I told her that I would have to go slowly. I'm going to return in a couple of weeks for fillings. Hopefully, by then, I'll have some idea of how to handle the other things on the list. They wanted to sell me something that would probably help my gums, but the cost was prohibitive. I'm guessing that they don't make much money with people on Medi-Cal but they should understand that the same people are struggling already. With each person, I was treated with respect, and asked if I had questions. No one rushed me or made me feel uncomfortable. Their equipment seems to be quite modern, like any that you would expect in a more expensive facility. I hope that my future visits will be positive. Update: The fillings visit was very good and things remained happy. We joked a bit and I found that the assistant came from an area toward the East Coast and we shared some food stories. My office experience was less than adequate. I made an appointment online for the 31st of March. This would be my first visit to this office. I received a text message on the 30th confirming the date and time of the appointment. The message even had the address included. When I arrived at the office for my appointment, I was met with confusion. They have no appointment listed for me. They even suggested that I had the wrong office. I attempted to show them the text message that I'd received the day before but they were not interested in seeing it. Then they suggested that I make another appointment for the 3rd. I went ahead and scheduled the appointment but had no intentions of showing up. I felt like I was denied service most likely because of either my insurance, California Care, Delta Dental or because I was black. (They over schedule) Both my daughters got their braces here and it's very difficult to get appointments, as ortho is only open Wednesdays and Friday's. They will cancel your appt with no prior notification because "doctor did not show up" a call would be nice, they DO NOT respect your time. I have had bad experience to worse here and the worse part is I can't stop the treatment because insurance will only cover braces once, Plus they're already paid off. I also had my braces here but half way through the process I moved to a different dentist and got Invisalign instead and although I had to pay treatment twice I don't regret it, I just couldn't deal with these people. I was conned out of $1,100.00 by the dentist at this office. She told me that my gums and teeth were in terrible shape and if I wanted to prevent any further decay, I should buy upper and lower teeth molds for monthly treatments with this special gel that would build back up my gums. She told me that this treatment was partially covered by insurance and I would need to pay the remaining amount. She LIED to me. When I went in for my first appointment, I was handed a bag with the upper and lower molds and a year's supply of gel and was told that I had to apply this gel myself every morning and every evening for 10 minutes of time each and every day for the next 365 days! I was shocked! I asked them about what the dentist had told me about the monthly treatments, and they said that this was a self-administered procedure that I would do at home. I was also told that my insurance never covered this procedure and that I had paid the entire amount of $1,00.00 out of my own pocket! I would never have paid $1,000.00 for 2 pieces of plastic tooth molds if I knew that I would have to do this daily treatment myself. I was led to believe this $1,100.00 amount I paid plus what the insurance company would be paying would be vital to the health of my gum and teeth, and that these 12 monthly treatments at the dentist office would be worth this amount of money. I am a patient that is hard to numb and have had to have several in depth procedures in a very short period of time and Dr. Cercenia and Dr. Fong made my visit more than bearable. They are kind, professional, calm, and extremely skilled at what they do! My Mother has also had work done here and feels the same about both Doctors! I scheduled an appointment for my sister in law on their website to have a check up at this office but they just changed it without her consent. She didn't find out until she checked in at the office and they told her she would have to wait for the doctor to come back from lunch if she wanted to be seen the same day. They told her they reached out to her about the schedule change but she claimed that she didn't hear from them at all. I also scheduled an appointment for my nephew as well and they did the same thing, although my nephew got a notification from them. After deciding to do it, Jennifer was extremely patient, respectful, and helpful, when it came to explaining the process. By far the WORST general dentist ever. On one occasion they had my 5 year old wait 3 hours for a cleaning!!! Other times they have misscheduled our appointments. They scheduled my daughter for a pediatric specialist when they didn't have a specialist available. this dentistry is the worst, they told me I'd only have to wear my braces for 2-3 years max, now I'm at 4 years with them and my teeth have gotten worse and my bite is terrible. The braces caused me to develop an eating disorder because no matter what I ate and didn't eat, my braces would constantly break and I felt like it was just causing my teeth to take longer to get fixed. They knew about this and didn't care, all they'd do is tighten them and 3/4 of the time they didn't even bother changing my wires. I asked them why they kept breaking even though all I was eating was soups and extremely soft things, they just said I was eating bad food. So it resorted to only drinking things or just flat out starving myself and THEY STILL KEPT BREAKING. The dentistry here continued to only "tighten" them and not even change the wires and my teeth were even getting spread apart??? My top front teeth were beginning to get a gap but I thought it was because my other tooth was fixing itself, but no it wasn't. It was a result of them doing such a terrible job. My bite only continued to get worse and they told me I might need surgery and they did nothing to help. They even took nearly a year to just put my TOP braces on, they only put on my bottom stating it was to "help my bite," my ass, it made my bite WORSE. This dentistry has a terrible braces system, they will keep breaking even if you're flat out starving yourself to keep them from breaking from "bad foods," and they will probably just fuck up your teeth even more like they did to me. Now I'm in the western dental located in San Francisco and they told me I'm gonna need to repay for my service because now I need another 1-2 years to even try to fix what this place did to me. They do not care about you, really they don't, I told them I wasn't eating to try and help this stop breaking and guess what they did? Nothing lol, let's just "tighten" your wires and not even change them. It even took them forever just to send my files to the San Francisco location. I asked for them to do so mid June and here I am BARELY getting an appointment here in San Francisco because it took them THAT LONG to get the files??? First, I had to wait an hour to get called in. In the meantime, the staff is call the insurance to confirm payment. This is something that should get done prior to the patient coming in for their appt. Then the person who took my x-rays was rude all around. Afterwards, I asked for a copy of the x-rays for the oral surgeon, they gave me the pictures on print paper, which is useless. I want to start off by giving a huge shout out to Ashley, the doctor whose name I didn't get, but I'll see him in six weeks, and the dental assistant who put wires on for me. You all, as a team, really made my whole entire year. I'm a dramatic person in general, but truly, this experience here at Western Dental was really 10/10. I first got braces in October 2014 when I lived in Phoenix, AZ. I moved back to CA in June 2015. I wasn't able to be seen out here for my braces due to that dental office not being common out here. At first I had perfect braces, right? As months went by the rubber bands started breaking off the brackets so I just took them all off. I had the wires still in, but they got so annoying. Of course, took them off and went about my way. Now at this point I literally just have brackets on my teeth. It looked so funny, but I was like whatever! I went to multiple places before coming to Western Dental and all the places refused to treat me due to my brackets being from a different clinic. I understood that slightly, but not really.. Two years go by and I finally have the time and availability to get a free consultation here. I came here with only the intentions of getting a consultation. I wasn't, at all, thinking I would be leaving the clinic with braces. The wait time wasn't long. I checked in about 9:31 AM, appointment at 9:30 AM then was taken back maybe 10 minutes after. I wasn't really worried because I didn't have any plans. The doc examines my teeth and while doing so we're having a great conversation, haha. He was just extremely outgoing for a very-matured man. It was nice talking to him. After he examines my teeth he brings me to the room where we talk business. He tells Ashley a few things while I'm waiting inside the room and I can sort of hear what they're saying. I hear, "Keep brackets." "Extra brackets" "18 months." and I'm trying not to get my hopes up just in case. She walks in, greets me and we get back to business. We're keeping my brackets because they are well maintained (duh) and they are the same material. My heart is screaming with joy at this point and I'm trying to keep my cool. We go over the financial part about everything- No down payment, no first payment, and it'll be on auto-pay. Well, sheesh. That sounds about perfect to me! Still in my head I'm telling myself to not get excited because you're not getting braces today. I was expecting we would just be scheduling when the wires and bands will be put on. She tells me that we're going to the back so we can put them on. I'm like whaaaaat? I gave her a huge hug. Seriously, it made my whole year.. You guys don't understand how happy I was. I was living off brackets for two whole years. My whole experience with Western Dental was really just a perfect one. I wasn't expecting this, at all. I walked out with braces and a bunch of goodies from them! Look at their photos to see what they gave me. Goodness, this staff is great! I hope that they continue to be like this with more of their customers so they can keep a good reputation! I'm sorry to anyone who didn't have a swell experience, but I sure did and I'm not sorry for that. It's about time I take care of myself! My year has just been a roller coaster of emotions.
