After all these years, I am so happy The Western Railway Museum is still here and looking great as ever! My son has been an avid fan or trains since birth! I cannot even count how many train museums we have visited. This past visit was for the Spring Wine Trains with my husband. Suggested to us by none other than our son. He now volunteers here!! YAY! We loved being in the parlor car- you get a charcuterie board and 3 tastings. The group was lively, the hosts were great. It was such a nice time and the weather was perfect that day. They explain the various wines (we had Caymus served to us) and you get a nice little tour of the land/area. We got to chat with our son who was the Operations Brakeman that day and what a treat...on the return ride back, we were offered the rear seats. It was the perfect way to end the ride. We took advantage that your ticket includes entrance to the museum, spring fair and the grounds. We walked around, checked out the trains, the fair and the gift shop. Parking is free and plenty of it is available. read more

I came here for the Holiday Lights train ride and light display. The train ride was not worth the money or time. The train had a string of lights strung around inside with a small speaker playing holiday music at the front of the train. There was nothing to look at during the 15-20 minute ride except some cows and a few wind turbines. The train basically went down the tracks 10 mins and then went back to station in the opposite direction. There were also many loud parents and uncontrolled kids on the train which did not make the experience enjoyable. The light display was okay. You got to see some cool old trains with holiday lights on them. But you could not enter any of the trains in the light display area. The lit up trains were simply a route to go see Santa. The Santa area was really dark which was not great for pictures. The staff promote a cafe with hot chocolate and cider after the train ride and light display. I got a spice cider for $6. It was not good. It was full of pulp and the spices were floating on top. It seemed like the staff did not stir up the cider before serving it. The museum and gift shop are really small and catered more towards kids. The gift shop had some adult clothes and souvenirs (magnets, small figures, etc.) but nothing extraordinary. Overall, I would not recommend this place for the Holiday Lights event. There are better holiday train rides and events in Old Town Sacramento. read more

Another great pumpkin patch for the 2025 season! This was our fifth year in a row. My kid is 6 years old now, and the pumpkin patch is only getting better for him. He can run through the hay bale fort by himself, and he was able to do the Zipline, too. The hay field maze hasn't been there every year, and it was missing again this year. But they had pony rides this time!! My son thought that was a great addition (additional cost). No Kona Ice, either, but that's not a big deal. Tip: If you come at the end of the season, the pumpkins were cheaper to purchase!! read more

We took the Santa Train. It was almost $60 just for me & my child. We had never been, so I had no idea what to expect. What a janky disappointment. It was advertised that you could decorate an ornament & write a letter to Santa. We got there a little early to do so. The ornament was literally a plain balsa wood tree & a little box of dried out cheap markers sitting on a card table, most with the caps off. None of them worked, so we couldnt color an ornament. The letter making was just another table with coloring pages on it. The staff inside was uninterested & dismissive. They all look annoyed, if they look at you at all. It was freezing out, but we went out to check out the "cafe". They had the doors locked up, windows closed & staff were warm inside. They had a HUGE speaker blaring music outside, and benches were covered in water so you couldnt even sit to wait. "Cafe" is a strong word too...it was bags of chips & bottles of water you can buy, passed through a window The conductors on the train were nice, but decor & holiday anything was scarce. They took us maybe a mile out on the track, no narration, no stories or cocoa or anything, then said "oops we went the wrong way, we dont have GPS, sorry folks we gotta go back". The people sitting next to me & myself were confused...was this part of the "schtick"? I guess it was. We were all wondering...is there actually a Santa? It was very confusing. We went back & they finally led us into a big train barn decorated with lights & decor, which was very cool. Santa was at the end of the path, but hecwas the MOST UNINTERESTED SANTA EVER. "Come on up here kid, want a bell". No questions or sweet interactions. I said "Merry Christmas Santa", he replied "Yep, ok". Then we were ushered back out into the cold by the elf. Very odd. Very expensive for what it actually was. Very janky. Every single person pushed "buy a membership!"..for WHAT?! A eoom of displays you cant touch, and a barn of old, dirty train cars with no info or context. I would say skip this, it wasnt worth it. read more

This is the second year hubby and I have experienced Springtime on the Jepson Prairie. I must admit, last year's Prairie Wildflowers were much better, but this time we booked the Wine Tasting Parlor Car Tour! 3 tastings included. All wine provided by Wooden Valley Winery. It was a gorgeous, windy day as the train left the station. Our Motorman Richard, was so kind and a plethora of these electric trains history. Our driver( dag nabbit) forgot her name, was so fun and engaging. Mind you, these folks are ALL volunteers. They come from as far as the south bay area to serve us and this historic piece of history. This is an all ages, interactive museum that everyone in the family can enjoy. Loved the train ride, the trolley ride, and the ability to explore the trains on exhibit. The grounds are lovely and I recommend bringing a picnic or snack. There is a small cafe that serves some things yet the nearest restaurants are in Rio Vista. Helpful tips: Be prepared for wind. Bring a hoodie or sweatshirt and wear longer layers. Caps are a good idea. Tennis shoes are a must, Hand sanitizer! Need I say more? The rest of this is written for those needing some assistance. I'm a parent of adults with low and medium autism support. Mobility - you need to be able to climb up into a train and some are easier than others. The area is on a hill and paths are paved but some are rocky. You could call and inquire with the museum about ADA compliance. Really disappointed in the Santa train experience this year. We've done this several years and our daughter was looking forward to the event. The train ride is out and back with a story that we are looking for Santa but then turn back cause he was at the museum the whole time. Not much dialogue on the train just watching the cows go by. My big beef is that once we arrived at Santa, my child was acting very shy and afraid. Santa asked her if she wanted a lump of coal in her stocking and then made a comment of 'what's wrong with you?' I find this behavior towards a young child meeting a stranger incredibly unprofessional for a Santa and was so appalled. She later asked me why Santa was going to give her a lump of coal. read more

It's been years since I've been to the Western Railway Museum. This is my 3rd time coming in the past 25+ years that I have lived in Solano County. We came this particular Saturday because I won free tickets for a train ride here from the local radio station (KUIC), so I couldn't pass up a free train ride for the family and learn more of the local history and about the trains/railway. The trains here are electric trains that run off DC power from the overhead electrical lines. Train rides are normally available during Saturdays and Sundays. They do have specialty train rides during Halloween that take you to a pumpkin patch and back plus a Santa Train which should be starting the first weekend in December. The normal train rides are about 50 minutes or so long and guided by docents who talk about the local history and about the trains. I feel the ticket prices are a little high for the train rides and even higher for the specialty train rides during Halloween and Santa Train, but since it's a small railway museum, they I understand the need to generate enough money to sustain the maintenance of the facility, trains and tracks. Overall, this is a nice place to visit if you have an interest in trains. read more

We came across this place by accident really and although the inside doesn't have much displays or museum they certainly have a lot of train cars in the barns outside and a fantastic train ride with lots of cool information about the area and the trains history. So many cars to look at and lots of information on their histories. We were lucky enough to arrive right before a train was leaving so we came in and said hi and bought a ticket and boarded the train. We were there on a really hot day and thought there would be more inside (in air conditioning) displays in museum but not really most everything here is outside. read more

A trip down memory lane! I took my two train loving kids here last weekend and loved it. The staff was so informative and helpful, we loved their gift shop selection and train play area. We did their train ride and enjoyed their nostalgic ad replicas. I plan to come back for the halloween pumpkin patch fundraiser. We loved the trains in the warehouse as well. My only wish was that they had food and snacks readily available but we brought our own. read more

My husband is a history buff so I decided to surprise him with a date day to the western railway museum. We both had a lovely time and enjoyed it even more than I thought we would. With your ticket includes a ride on one of the trains as well as a tour of the train yards. The train ride was really cool as they were the same ones people road when California was first established with the key trains. After the train ride we got off and went inside the air conditioned train yard where the manager of the museum gave us a tour. We learned so much of the history of the California railroad and got to tour some trains inside there too! Overall they've done a lovely job with this place and if you are interested in learning about California history this is a great place to spend a few hours. read more

It's worth a try especially if you have young kids that enjoy trains. It's a bit pricey but at the same time can understand that there are a lot of costs to maintain and expand the museum. They usually have festive events to include a pumpkin patch around Halloween and Christmas lights in the winter. I really enjoyed the old timers telling historical stories. read more

We took the Scenic Train Ride to look at Spring flowers. Whilst most flowers were no longer in bloom on this last day, we still had a blast. The Conductor volunteers were charming, funny, and knowledgeable. The person serving cookies and lemonade was sweet and attentive. She even let my partner and I know on the ride back we could sit in the cars outside on the front/back of the train which was the best part of the whole ride. The first train car we rode in on the ride out had old pallor chairs and such to sit in. Whilst they were definitely vintage and fitting for the train car they were a bit old and dingy. We didn't let it bother us as the ride started and we enjoyed listening to the conductors and stories from other passengers. In the other train cars they were tables and chairs and also vintage passenger seats/benches. At the end of the trip out, they allowed the passengers to step outside as they prepped the train to take us back to the museum. Conductors helped passengers take family photos and gave more facts of the surrounding area. As we toured one of the car houses a volunteer offered information about some of the cars. They were 4 of the historic street cars you could go in and tour. It was quite a collection of Bay Area street cars, as well as, an unique open boat car from London and street cars from other states. The grounds had other trains and parts and pieces. There was a second car house we didn't get to tour due to coming for the last ride of the day. The gift shop was decent with a big collection of books from different areas and types of trains. I was hoping the gift shop would have been a little better. I have been to the Skunk Train gift shop in Fort Bragg which has everything. I was expecting something similar to that. Needless to say I still found something to buy. Overall, I'd definitely travel back to Suisun City area to take the train again. I'd definitely get there earlier to tour all the car houses and check out the cafe area that looks like an old depot waiting area. This is definitely for all ages and genders. They were a handful of kids, i expected more. But even the three year old riding next to us had a great time! read more

Although the price is a bit extreme, I can say that you'll thoroughly enjoy this place if you're a history buff. I enjoyed some of the classic trains and trolleys that they have and liked the train ride but I came with my toddler for their Halloween event and there was only a limited amount of things to do there with a kid. Also, I didn't appreciate one of the conductors during the train ride saying something out loud about politics. I'm not a political person and it completely changed the atmosphere around us and it wasn't appropriate for the kids to hear. read more

The train ride was fun and educational. It's actually a 20 minute ride and but they stop constantly and talk for 30 minutes. The views are nice. The bathrooms are very clean and large. The trains run every hour starting at 11:00AM. There's food available, mostly hot dogs and hamburgers. There's a cute store with mostly t-shirts and the train tickets are really cute (see pics). If you're 65 or above, it's 9 dollars and includes everything. All other tickets are 10 dollars. The museum itself is really small. Pretty much you come for the train ride. read more

Buy tickets for a train or trolley ride, as rides are the center of the experience here. You get to chug across the countryside in a restored vehicle, with great narration and friendly staff. The trolley ride is great and well worth the ticket price. There's currently one barn open with trolley and train cars in various stages of restoration. Some can be climbed into. Cross your fingers for the big barn at the back to have enough volunteers to be open so you can see more. The wine train experience is stripped-down compared to Napa. Wear sensible shoes so you can explore the museum while waiting for your train, and put some wipes in your purse or pocket, as you'll be balancing red wine and hors d'oeuvres with no tray table. There may or may not be a snack bar, so have some meal plans in Rio Vista or Fairfield. I genuinely love this museum for their dedication to regional trolley history -- there's so much more than you'd guess! read more

An absolutely charming trip through the delta countryside on a vintage rail car. The tours are run by friendly and dedicated train buffs, familiar California railway history. We saw super blooms, jackrabbits and Tule Elk along the way. It was an entirely pleasant experience. Great way to spend a Sunday for all ages. It is only opened on weekends. Admission prices were great and the staff friendly and knowledgeable. Small size artifacts on display not in great quality but the big ones more than make up for them. An excellent collection of street cars and passenger cars for all periods, local and foreign sources. Sit down in one of them and you will get the feel for what it was like to ride mass transit back in the day. A train ride is included with admission for a 5 mile trek over the original Sacramento Northern Railway tracks, with stops and 2 bells to go. read more

The rail museum is a great weekend activity for young & old! Hubby saw the museum as we were headed to base. We scheduled a train ride on Sunday & had to change plans...the customer service was excellent. They changed our day quite easily & happily. We got there early and were able to wander around the indoor museum & headed outside to check out the rail cars. While waiting on our 12:30 train ride, we hopped on the street car for a little trip around the yard. The street car conductor was very nice & had a lot of great information to share. We really enjoyed the streetcar ride. Soon after returning, we boarded the parlor car for the train ride. We chose to go first class, so we enjoyed cookies & lemonade on the ride. The staff were all very kind & informative. The young gentleman that gave us the history was excellent! The ride is very pretty and calm. We, honestly, didn't really expect much, but ended up really enjoying our time here. Take your time and check out the park, too. Lots of jackrabbits in the park! read more

Had a really nice time here Sunday, 10/20/2019 - Fun day at Rotary Pumpkin Festival! Had an awesome 15 minutes train ride there and back ($14 adult, $10 kids) from Western Railway Museum, sling shot pumpkin across the field, games, hay ride, lots of scarecrows to vote for, swings, petting zoo, poney rides, arts and crafts, snack table, face painting, live band, etc. The best thing kids loved? The mountain of hay that's a fort with 4 slides, kinda like a maze inside there, and a fire fighter pole to slide down from. Oh and the Spongbob jump house. It wasn't overly crowded. It's wonderful to have a traction museum in the San Francisco Bay area. A multi-car interurban and a single street car operate multiple times a day. The guided car barn tour after the interurban run is the crown jewel of this institution. It's optional, no extra cost, and should not be missed. I also rode the wine train. There were three pours as well as light hors d'oeuvres. All in all quite generous. The wine trains run once a quarter, so subscribe to the newsletter to find out when the next one will be. For railfans, the WRM has a historically significant collection, including motive power and rolling stock you won't see anywhere else. It's difficult to photograph the car barn tour at 28mm, so bring a 24mm or 20mm. read more

My sister and I very much enjoyed the hour-long train ride through pleasant Solano County countryside, sitting comfortably in a charming vintage 1913 parlor car. The only slight disappointment was that, it being early April, the ride was described as the "wildflower train", and so we thought we'd see large fields or swaths of flowers--but there wasn't much to see flower-wise. I assume it's just a matter of getting lucky with the timing. But I'd certainly recommend this lovely experience of an earlier era at any time of year--wildflowers or no wildflowers. The history museum is very nice as well. read more

If you've never been to the WRM you must go! Hubby and I have been several times over the years, but the views have never been as stunning as now! The Super Bloom is in a full explosion! We arrived to a warm greeting, lemonade and Chocolate Mini Cupcakes. Nice!! After meandering about the visitors center we head to the Railway Boarding area. The staff is so kind and helpful. There were many elderly folks deboarding the earlier excursion, it took a bit before we got to hop on. We chose to sit in the conventional rail car that has the 2 way seats. For an additional fee there IS a First Class Bar Car which apparently has softer swivel chairs and offers Wine and Hors Dourves. The car we were in was beautiful and completely remodeled to it's original decor. The horn sounds and off we go! Just an FYI....The views of the flowering prairie are best and most prevalent on the west side. I actually moved across the isle to get the photos which I hope you enjoy! Great for boys and girls or big boys who never grew up! I thought at first this place was really just a museum where you walk around. How wrong I was! They have a ton of trains and a ride is included in the price of admission. The museum is okay, but I recommend really spending your time looking at all of the old trains and locomotives. I took a short run on one of those street cars today. There are also other types of trains that they run depending upon how busy it is. Following the streetcar run I looked around one of their car barns that houses the various locomotives and trains. What a lot of wonderful history there is here! Keep a lookout for some of the cars that they used to ferry troops around World War II. You really have to see this for yourself it's a lot of fun. Where in the world can you go on train rides these days for $10! If you are a senior or AAA, you also get a dollar discount. So all in all, a wonderful place to visit. Plan on staying here a few hours to check out all of the wonderful trains and train history. There is a small cafe near the main entrance and there are also restrooms right there as well. read more

The Western Railway Museum is situated next to the, now abandoned, tracts of mainline of the Sacramento Northern Railway. The museum acquired 20 miles of the former right-of-way of this electrified interurban railroad that once extended 183 miles from Oakland to Chico. Volunteers re-strung and energized the overhead wires so the trolley can run again The museum is a pleasant day trip that the whole family can enjoy. The museum might seem like it is in the middle of nowhere, and I guess it is. Once you arrive there is a lot to see and do. There are picnic tables in the shade. You can bring your own lunch or pickup something in the small café. There is a gift shop, exhibits, shop buildings to explore vintage trolleys, interurban, and street cars to admire and piles of beautiful rusty things. However, the main reason to come here is to ride the trolleys, streetcars and interurban cars. It is best to check the museum website to choose what type of ride you want to take. They vary in focus. In the spring the wildflower train rides are popular. Some trips include a simple lunch there is even an afternoon wine tasting tour. In October rides go to a pumpkin patch. I enjoyed my ride! I stepped into the trolley and sat on a leather seat with wooden details. When it stared down the track I was transported to another time and place. I looked out of the window and enjoyed the barren landscape dotted with a few late wildflowers brightening the green and golden weeds. A few cows were lying in a pond. The horn tooted and we slowed when the trolley crossed a seldom used back road. The car swayed and rumbled to the end of the track. Everyone got off and they switched the wire so we could return. If I hadn't seen the wind turbines, I could easily imagine I was on my way from Oakland to Sacramento 100 years ago. read more

I came in last week expecting a boring museum filled with some old train cars and maybe a docent or two to answer my questions. What I got for my $9 admission, instead, was an hour-long ride on an electric train through the California countryside, an in-depth history lesson of the area, and a full afternoon of climbing in and out of the trains they have stored in their "barn". I had a great time, the Hubs had a great time, our 9 year old had a great time too! The Western Train Museum is worth the drive to find, and the afternoon to explore. read more
