We were there to celebrate a couple of birthdays. I made reservations online, which was easy and…read morereceived a response back that day confirming the reservation. We arrived at 8:30 pm and were seated promptly. At first glance it doesn't look that big however, we were ushered downstairs and found another whole dining room. The decor is very rustic, inviting and lovely. We were trying to figure out if they would notice we carried on of the tables out with us when we left. Service was the best we have received since arrive in England. Very personable, friendly, attentive without hovering. They kept the drinks flowing almost as quickly as we were drinking and ordering them. The food was out of this world. Old world Moroccan, as the owner is from Morocco and take pride in what he serves. There were a variety of dishes ordered: We started with the Azouma and Vegetarian Mix Mezze for mains we ordered a variety of dishes: Lamb Tagine with Prunes, Chicken Tagine (with preserved lemons), Meat Ball Tagine, Vegetarian Tagine, and Lamb Shawarma. The side of Couscous were cooked perfectly. I ordered the Lamb Tagine with Prunes (Slow cooked lamb, prunes, caramelised pears, onions and toasted almonds, with sweet and savoury spices). It is to-date the best lamb that I have had since arrive in England. Most of the lamb so far has had a gamey taste and typically very fatty; this was neither. It was lean, tender and flavoured to perfection. I was also fortunate to try the Baklava - the BEST I've ever had. With ample amounts of flowing drinks, apps, five mains and two desserts the total bill came to about £35 pp. There is limited street parking, best to use the lot across Broad St (Queningate Car Park) close to the wall. You only pay until 9 pm.

Kambi's was absolutely rammed on a quiet wednesday evening. I went with a dear iranian friend and…read morepassed by some spots I expected to be pretty packed at 9. Most other joints on the seafront and western road seemed pretty empty. Even the newly opened Jetty was a bit desolate. Folks seem to identify the food as a bunch different things, but the waiting staff definitely knew what was going on with persian dishes and names. We ordered the koobideh, a seasoned and marinated ground lamb dish served over rice with grilled tomatoes. As a side order, a gentle garlic yoghurt (mast maseer, they stylized it). In true iranian style we had a tableside bowl of sumac (a tangy, slightly citrusy berry ground into powder and used in middle eastern and especially iranian cuisine) which was pretty exciting. The meat was good, but a bit pricy for what it was. Thankfully the mix of raw onion, garlic yoghurt, saffron rice, and bits of decent lamb became more than the sum of its parts. 14 pounds each plus tip for that and 2 diet cokes was a bit much. I guess maybe it's unfair to compare everything to riddle & finns before 7:15. I would certainly go back to Kambi's when I'm in the mood for that lovely sumac. Apparently they do fessenjan on a Sunday, so I'll definitely be back for that. Slow cooked persian chicken is out of this world. The atmosphere was also quite endearing, with a persian family celebrating their toddler's birthday -- for which the staff put on a(n appropriately accented) happy birthday tune -- some token persian businessmen, and some british families. Everyone joined in the singing and clapping, which was nice. 3 and a half stars.
