I love supporting my LYS. I rarely walk out empty handed and I could spend hours talking to everyone about yarn and patterns. They have a wonderful selection but if they don't have something I want they can usually get it for me which they have done many times. They have beautiful yarn and one friendly employee, but there was another woman in the store who was loudly referring to their previous customers knitting questions as stupid. I was stunned. It was very uncomfortable as I held my daughters hand trying to get out of there asap. There were several other distasteful comments made and I'm just beside myself. There are plenty of other uppity yarn places I can go to that won't act like they're better than everyone. My second and third star is for the incredibly kind woman who was happy to help and get me what I came in for. I won't go back but she deserves to be recognized. I wish I got her name. read more

My friend and I had a really disappointing experience at Westport Yarns this weekend. We are both in our early 20s and enjoy knitting as a hobby, so we made plans to visit this specialty local yarn store to get advice about our next projects all while supporting a local business. When we arrived there were 3 women knitting at a table that did not even acknowledge our presence despite us being the only ones in the very small store. When I asked one of the employees for some advice she was incredibly dismissive and not at all interested in helping me. It was very discouraging as someone who is interested in learning more about knitting and willing to heed advice from a more experienced knitter. It's very sad that we walked out of that store feeling extremely unwelcome. I will not return and I will take my business elsewhere. I hope to find an alternative independent yarn store to support. 2 stars because they have a nice selection of high quality yarn. Prices reflect the high quality. read more

I was so excited to visit a local yarn shop, but I will never go back to this place. The woman working there (not sure if she was the owner) was incredibly dismissive and not at all helpful. I will be honest... Based on the reviews here I was so close to driving out to New York to find a specialty yarn store because I would rather have a longer drive than to have someone be rude to me. But I do live in the neighboring town and I figured it couldn't hurt to stop in and see, and if someone was rude I could turn around and go elsewhere. I went in and asked if someone could point me to some beginner crochet materials because I saw something online that I need to make for someone I love (purposely vague on the outside chance they read this) and when they found out that I am a complete beginner, they pulled up the website where I found the pattern. Two knitters oohed and aahed over the very cool design and told me that if I wanted to knit it instead of crochet, they could teach me. I left with a business card and was told to call a day in advance and they would teach me to get started in a private lesson for $20. I'll be setting that up this week. :) I know it will take time for my skills to advance to the level where I can actually do anything ambitious but I felt like they really wanted to help me learn to knit, and they assured me that it's something I could achieve. I have posted a review of this beautiful yarn shop before. I have to post again as the shop deserves an even higher rating than five stars. I am a LONG time knitter and have shopped in many yarn shops - Westport Yarns was, is and always will be my absolute favorite. The addition of Katie to WYS has brought so much NEW and EXCITING! I love that the shop continues to explore and stock new yarns and products. Brands that I have always loved from afar, such as Sweet Georgia, Gigi Bonin, Yarn Catcher - just to name a few - are now mine for the buying! Love all the samples that show these fabulous yarns and MANY others. I always find a familiar face at the shop and they always indulge my joy at just being there! It's a wonderful shop! This is my LYS! So proud it is. They have recently added all of Brooklyn Tweed- a great line with fabulous colors. Can't wait to make the Brooklyn Tweed Pattern Bolt- (Sample in store) so great looking. They also carry Madeline Tosh and Anzula as well as Art yarns and many other delicious yarns. Made a return trip to Westport Yarns 1/12/16. The store had several people getting knitting help. The staff was working hard to answer questions about patterns and also help customers shopping for new projects. I enjoyed the store experience. The samples are really interesting - lots to look at and touch. I have to make several circles if the store to see everything and I never felt crowded or rushed. I really like this store. The best parts are : - nice staff and manager on site who are expert knitters and are very encouraging. - top quality fibers - alpaca merino cashmere silk pretty colors soft and worth the investment and your knitting time. - good samples that inspire - time to think and decide There are some so-so reviews but my experiences here have been consistently excellent. Julie and Beth are my new knitting-sensei's! Beth helped me pick out a project that fit my 15 years-since-used knitting skills! Met with Julie the next day and she re-tooled my wonky knit-stitch; showed me a new system to cast on and was extremely patient with my mistakes and arthritic, slow fingers- she even let me try 3 different sets of needles till I found the right "fit!" Went into Westport Yarns last week for some help with a project. I had a contrasting yarn I wanted to use for my project but was unsure if I had enough so I wanted to purchase some contrasting yarn. Well, the owner was wonderful in help g me. She decided to weigh my ball of contrast yarn to see how much I had. We discovered I had 90 grams. And she suggested I use it and if I were to run out to finish with the main color. What a gift! She was not pushing for me to purchase new yarn. You know I will be back. I am an avid advocate for small business owners and also enjoy knitting. I tend to carry a small project with me when I travel, and love visiting local yarn shops near the locations I visit. On way home from Boston today I needed a break from heavy traffic, so I found this local yarn shop and decided to stop by. I always make a purchase to support these shops. One of the employees helped me select a yarn that would match my current project. After I paid for it, I decided to sit and knit for a little while, to allow traffic to lighten up. I didn't feel welcome, even though I had just purchased a hank of yarn from their inventory. I was planning on staying longer, but felt so uncomfortable that I decided to head back into traffic. The shop has nice yarn, and their samples are knit in beautiful color combinations. read more

Really disappointed with the customer service at this store. I took a beginning knitting class here some time ago, which was fine. I went back today with a question about how to wind fine yarn wrapped in a hank as I keep snarling it. I even offered to pay for help. The woman behind the counter said if I'd bought it there, she would have helped wind it. The store was empty....no customers. She could had taken 10 minutes to demonstrate the technique and have kept a customer. As it is, I'll shop online instead as at least those retailers will answer questions. read more

I will not go back.... Before the holidays my co worker introduced me back into knitting. Wash clothes. I was hooked, so I went to Westport Yarns to continue on my new found hobbie. The first couple of times I visited I told the salesperson of my little wash clothes I was making and she directed me to the small selection I could choose from, each time I made a purchase. Then I made a mistake in my knitting, uncomfortable as it was, I went in with my knitting in hand. I asked a women sitting at the table for some help, she looked at my work and 1st said the yarn I was using was awful, I told her I had purchased it there, she then went on to say " you need to learn how to correct your own mistakes without coming in here" I said I tried watching videos, she said I also need to learn how to read my stitches ....yikes ! I understand all this is true....but I was just seaking a little help. She was rude, condescending and the reason, I will not step foot in that store. Formerly known as Knitting Central, a former customer of the store (Beth) didn't want to see it close and she bought it, keeping all the employees. It's a delightful place to choose yarn, patterns, get expert advice, take classes, and/or just hang out and knit. I went in with limited experience and Pam was extremely helpful and patient, even adapting a pattern to the kind of yarn I wanted to use. Only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that I would have liked a greater selection of the type of yarn I wanted....but it wasn't exactly the right season, so I can't really fault the store for that. I went into this shop today. What a shock I am still upset about. I needed help with replicating a hat (no pattern) with products that were purchased at the store. I've been knitting for 30 years but I'm no expert and need suggestions on the decreases and bind off techniques for the hat. I waited patiently while the staff person helped a prior customer. When she turned to me, she was beyond rude. "You can look it up on Google or you can listen to me now" and I was scolded for not winding the skeins. She explained that this person who was so rude to me has "a big following" and that she is commercially savvy. Long story short, Beth prefers to keep this employee to this customer, which is her right. Westport Yarns is my go-to yarn store - they have the best yarn selection from literally the world over. When I travel for work, I try to find a local yarn store to see what interesting yarns and patterns I can find. I was in Paris in November and found some beautiful angora - and when I stopped in Westport Yarns the following week, I saw it on their shelves! Next I happened to be in London and went across the city to Loop, to see what they had - a beautiful selection of yarns, but nothing new I couldn't find at Westport Yarns - whether it was from South Africa, the US or the UK. If I could give negative stars, I would. Everyone starts a skill as a beginner; I am learning how to knit. The person who "helped" me at Westport Yarns was so condescending and rude to me that I am surprised I did not walk out. She lectured me about the fact that I did not know the correct terms for what I was looking for and spoke to me in a belittling manner. As a beginner and potential life long customer, I do not deserve that kind of treatment. I support a lot of local businesses, but it's to the big box store for me. I will never shop here again and suggest you don't either. read more
